  • I had gastric bypass on January 23, 2012. No pain at all. No soreness. Six tiny incisions. I have been starving! Tuesday I get to eat an egg. Can't wait.

  • I too just had surgery on 1/11/12 and the day I left the hospital (2 days after surgery) I had lots of head hunger, everything I saw I felt like I could eat and I knew that it was only head hunger but the 3rd day after surgery I was so hungry and my stomach growls and growls and growls even after I eat some chicken broth! So you are very lucky that yours goes away with eating some broth!

  • I went to a dietician last week who showed me on a chart where hunger receptors are and explained about the surgeons different ways of doing things. Just be careful not to eat more than a cup of food at one time ever, do not drink and eat, no carbonated drinks. My experience shows ppl who are not hungy, and get sick , have a terrible skin/ muscle tone and their face droops and looks awful. But the people who ARE HUNGRY and neve get sick , look better. So its just a trade off one has to accept.

  • I am 6 yrs post op now and I have also been hungry as well. I came home from the hospital being hungry. I have NEVER thrown up. I can NOT eat ice cream or drink wine or orange juice.. I have friends who are never hungry but also they can not eat meats, or bread, many things and are sick a lot. It depends on the surgeon , how large he makes the opening from end of esophagus to new pouch and if he staples the stomach in a place which blocks off some hunger receptors.

  • I had the same problem

  • I'm 10 days post-op and have been hungry as well. I was so shocked.

  • I went through the hunger too and was just as astounded as you bc I expected to not be hungry, but I was hungry just a few hrs after surgery. I am 10 days post-op.

  • Thank you so much for posting this bcuz i felt the EXACT same way u did. I was ALWAYS hungry. I thought I was the only one. Hearing all these people saying they weren't hungry days after surgery made me upset. I felt that there had to be at least ONE PERSON who reacted the same way i did. THANK YOU!

  • I am ten days out from surgery and my stomach constantly growls. I feel really hungry but have been trying to resist eating anything. It is great to hear I am not the only one that is hungry. Still have sharp pains every so often do you know if this is normal??

  • Hey I just had surgery on 8/11 I have been hungry too and not in your mind hungry real hungry

  • It is not hunger you feel, I was under the assumption that I was, it is all in your head, your body is actually asking you for liquids, and broth and jello is considered liquids. I bet if you keep drinking fluids those hunger temptations will go away, they are not stomach pains and the growls are the liquids processing through your system , that's what my doc said.

  • Yeah, I was told that I wouldn't be hungry after surgery. As soon as I awoke from surgery, I wanted a big juicy hamburger. I think mine was mostly head hunger though. A couple weeks later I didn't like food at all. Around 7 months out, I started actually feeling hungry and started eating more food. Now I actually have to work at not overeating.

  • I'm 6 months out. Seems I've gone through phases. Early on, I longed for food. At about 2-4 months I ate. Never had that "full" sensation. I still don't. I used to think what was going to be my next meal and couldn't wait for it. I enjoyed eating out. I'd make good decisions but could eat appetizers with no problem. Now, at 6 months out, I don't really think about food. I think about how am I going to lose those last 50lbs. I eat more because I think it's time to eat and now that I'm hungry

  • Interestingly enough, I thought I would never say,"I forgot to eat." prior to surgery, that would have NEVER happened. For the first few weeks I was "hungry". Now... 8 weeks out - have days where I have to convince myself to eat. Nothing sounds appetizing. If I don't have time, it doesn't seem like a big deal. That's weird for me.

Take care of yourself this and next week, especially. You need to rest and relax! Drink what you can in small sips.

    Congratulations on changing your life!

  • i was hungry after surgery and made it no secret and there are alot of other people on here too who said the same thing in their early videos... everyone is so different and how we feel after the surgery is unique to us...we each have our own individual experience.

hang in there..it does get better

  • I don't get hungry but my stomach growls a little sometimes. its not like it used to be where I could hardly wait to put something in my mouth.LOL You will feel better soon.Norma

  • So glad to see things went so well for you, I was told to that hunger pains can be mistaken for needing liquid intake..Well hang in there and I will be joining you soon..

  • GOOD LUCK!!

  • I was told that we should eat every 2 hours. just eat really small amounts and you will be fine. but eat more often . it will help!! good luck!

  • THANKS!!

  • Hey E,

Your hunger is normal but it is called "head hunger." Your mind is so conditioned to your eating habits, it tells your body you need to eat. Hang in there and it should go away as you heal.

  • SO Glad you talked about this.... I was hungry too and ice chips and diet popc, were my friends when I got hungry ...so glad to see you did fine and back home love ya...love rosemary

  • I was and still do, 10 months out, get hungry. You have to eat when you are hungry. Good for you for finding what works for you. I have found that some days I am hungrier than others. Some days I can go with out hunger. But some days, I can eat the house down. Listen to your body. It knows what it needs. Don't be discouraged. In the beginning, it is a trial and error. Good luck and God bless.

  • Hey Elria! Glad you had a safe surgery and are "home". Sorry you are experiencing hunger, I am one of those that still isn't feeling hungry, I have no clue why some do and some don't. In my opinion, I think it's good that your body is telling you that you NEED something. Anyway, glad you are doing ok!

  • weird aint it? the things i thought were wrong. i thought i would be a puker because i am normaly a puker. but no urge to puke. i thought no hunger pains and i have them. weird... btw i like your bangs.
