xymex : no they are basicly the property of the Chinese political party until they fulfill ther obligation from being taught how to compete. They share 90% of there earnings with the other divers, coaches, and the party.

but it's STILL not about the money. it's their obligation that they must fulfill. the government paid for their training and its their obligation now to compete and hopefully bring home medals.

the commentator makes it sound like it's all about the money which is pretty ridiculous....i mean the Chinese olympic team really doesn't need that additional $5000. and guo/wu makes 100 that amount per commercial.
