Toney was one of the pound for pound BEST boxers in the world..in the MID 90's!...at 160-168 pounds. Now he's in his 40's, fat, unmotivated, barely won his last few fights, and lost a couple of them. Other than an even older Evander, Toney has NEVER stopped a decent heavyweight fighter.
If a boxer ever has a chance to succeed in the UFC, it would have to be an explosive, fast, KO artist, like a young Tyson. This isn't MMA vs BOXING, it's MMA vs Toney, a really fat, near useless former great.

randy will not close enough distance on lights out, he is also going to have protect that body. The speed and angles of where those punches are coming from might overwhelm. Also footwork is superior to almost any other aspect of fighting if you don't have the right position to execute a take down then its pointless to even try against someone who is as disciplined in evading. only chance couture has is if he grapples.. its going to be an interesting one but i think tony will come out on top.

Couture will use leg kicks and takedowns to drain Toney's energy. I see the ref waving this one over when Toney can no longer intelligently defend himself. I don't think Toney has picked up enough useful grappling skills to use them vs an opponent who has been trained in wrestling for about 39 years. Couture may be older but I think his conditioning will be better.
Plus Randy has faced guys bigger than James and better at MMA, so I think James has to get a lucky KO at the beganing, and most likily if he takes that shot for the KO, it's gonna end up with randy on top of him. MMA fighters were both FASTER and HARDER hitting on average! Liddell was 1.5X's as fast, and he's old! Also, 39 years wrestling/ground game doesn't compare to a few months. The only way Toney will have a chance is if Couture makes a huge mistake. Hence the 5:1 odds.

The difference in mentality we see between Toney and Couture is that Toney is cocky and does seem to underestimate Randy. And Randy is very confident, but he does not underestimate Toneys arsenal.

You all miss the posint, This won't prove if Boxers are better or UFC fighters are tougher. Toney has had a lot of knock outs in his career but hasn't won by knock out in 8 years. That's something that needs to be considered, his only way of winning is by catching couture, and at this point in his career does he have the ability to put randy on his back. Should be interesting to watch.

All hte MMA junkies are gonna be left with a severely hurt legend. Toney is one of the quickest and most elusive heavyweights in boxing history. He definitely has the speed to counter Couture if he goes for a takedown. Despite the popular opinion, I think Toney actually had an edge over randy. Couture has no clue what a real punch feels like until he gets his face mashed like potatoes tonight. I'm takin' Toney by way of effortless knockout.

When he lowers his head, he will be put to sleep. No one in MMA hits hard as a top boxer. You will see two men fighing for pride! But No way Randy can beat Toney with a punch, yet Toney can hurt Randy with just one punch. Go look at the Ray Mercer and Time Sylvia fight again, you will see a preview of this fight.

Tim Sylvia is one of the biggest jokes in MMA. The only reason why he was UFC champ at all is because UFC had the worst HW roster at that time.
He wouldn't last a round in the UFC right now... So Mercer knocking him out doesn't really prove anything. My grandmother could knock his ass out.
Also, if Tony thinks Randy will trade punches with him then he's sorely mistaken, Randy will take him down within seconds and pound his face in.

@trukk08 as a former navy boxer and streetfighter before that I disagree! the earlier matches in mma showed the lack of striking by wrestlers but that is long past! they don't sit on them so much as they mount them and pound their face in! I wrestled some as well so I know. Toney has a chance but it is very slim. there is a reason boxers never won in the UFC. Toney is fat as hell and obviously brain damaged! good luck to them both and may the best man win!

You notice when two fighters are standing up for a while there is not a "sit-down" rule that takes effect. BUT when two fighters lie on each other for too long there is the "stand-up" rule. In case you didn't know some people are prone to cuts and some people aren't. Look at Chris Leben, you hit him he bleeds. Other guys, like Silva don't bleed as easily. Just because you watched highlights, the interview session and you saw Silva without blood doesn't mean that he didn't get dominated. The first real test, look what happened.

Toney was one of the pound for pound BEST boxers in the world..in the MID 90's!...at 160-168 pounds. Now he's in his 40's, fat, unmotivated, barely won his last few fights, and lost a couple of them. Other than an even older Evander, Toney has NEVER stopped a decent heavyweight fighter.
If a boxer ever has a chance to succeed in the UFC, it would have to be an explosive, fast, KO artist, like a young Tyson. This isn't MMA vs BOXING, it's MMA vs Toney, a really fat, near useless former great.

To topic starter: Randy won't hold Toney against cage and throw knees and dirty boxing. Once Randy gets a hold of Toney, Couture will take him down. The ground = no risk for Couture. Couture won't take any unnecessary risks.

randy will not close enough distance on lights out, he is also going to have protect that body. The speed and angles of where those punches are coming from might overwhelm. Also footwork is superior to almost any other aspect of fighting if you don't have the right position to execute a take down then its pointless to even try against someone who is as disciplined in evading. only chance couture has is if he grapples.. its going to be an interesting one but i think tony will come out on top.

Couture will take him down when he wants (first 15 seconds), then EITHER pound him out, OR sub him. That's Randy' s choice. Bottom line, he'll take Toney down and the match is over.

Couture will use leg kicks and takedowns to drain Toney's energy. I see the ref waving this one over when Toney can no longer intelligently defend himself. I don't think Toney has picked up enough useful grappling skills to use them vs an opponent who has been trained in wrestling for about 39 years. Couture may be older but I think his conditioning will be better.

In a boxing match, Toney would knock Couture out easy. But in MMA, Toney's pretty fucked. The only way Toney can win is with a knock out, and he obviously has the power to do so, but he doesn't have the speed to get a clean powerful punch on Couture.

His ground game might be up to amateur standards from the amount of training he's done but he wont have a chance against someone so confident and skilled as Couture. Though I think James Toney is awesome hes bitten off more than he can chew for sure. I think it would be cool if they had a boxing rematch

@TheArkham13asylum I'm afraid you're incorrect. Olympic Boxing and MMA athletes speed, reflexes, and power have ALL been tested by Fight Science Dr's and Discovery's kinesiologists. MMA fighters were both FASTER and HARDER hitting on average! Liddell was 1.5X's as fast, and he's old! Also, 39 years wrestling/ground game doesn't compare to a few months. The only way Toney will have a chance is if Couture makes a huge mistake. Hence the 5:1 odds.

The difference in mentality we see between Toney and Couture is that Toney is cocky and does seem to underestimate Randy. And Randy is very confident, but he does not underestimate Toneys arsenal.
I think that Randy is going to be very prepaird for this fight and he has more tools, more possibilitys and he's used to fighting in an octagone.

You all miss the posint, This won't prove if Boxers are better or UFC fighters are tougher. The fact is a Boxer can go into the UFC and become a BIG name, the UFC fighter would struggle to change over to Boxing and fight at the top level. Boxing takes more skill and is the better sport. FFS a WWE wrestler went into the UFC and became the Heavyweight Champion that says it all. It's street fighting with some submission moves and low quality boxers.

But saying that boxing takes more skill is up in the air. I understand the point with Brock coming in and dominating. But he's actually a legitimate wrestler, which is a huge aspect in MMA. So he isn't just some WWE guy, he's a well respected athlete. I'm not saying that MMA takes more skill, or boxing does. They're just 2 different sports, and they require a different skill set.

Love Randy Couture and MMA. At first I thought like everyone else that this is going to be a cakewalk for Randy, but recently all of the talk about what an easy fight for Randy it's going to be has made me think that this is going to be an upset. Toney has had a lot of knock outs in his career but hasn't won by knock out in 8 years. That's something that needs to be considered, his only way of winning is by catching couture, and at this point in his career does he have the ability to put randy on his back. Should be interesting to watch.

Toney cut weight? Hell no, I saw him at the diner the other night eating a cheese burger. Toney has to stay on the outside of RC's left shoulder and just out of range of strikes, look for an opening,step in land that straight hand to RC's cheek temple or best jaw, square up and go buck fucking wild. There will be little room for error on JT's part although look what JT did to Hasim rahmans head in the pocket. Cant wait for this fight, no matter the outcome.
