  • i am not sure but i think i heard that karate is derived from kung fu so technically i think it is karate kids

  • I liked both for one reason:One is Karate and the other is Kung-fu,so although he said new one is better I care less since it's not Karate!

  • The fact that the nostalgia critic, a cynical bastard, didnt even shake his hesd at smiths awful final kick makes him seem like a fanboi

  • W T F nostslgia critic? It was a fucking shit movie. The onky good thing is that they took a western mi ority. But still it was fucking dumb as shit, wtf was with the random american kids? Fucking fail, what was with he.....BACKFLIP kick?? The FUCK?? So unrealistic, no way an american could beat a chinese. im disappointed in you nostalgia critic

  • @DrTheKay ehm..exactly why you said this?an american can beat a chinese on kung fu,just like an american can beat an european playing football. Some nations are better than some others in some "sport" just because there's a better tradition, thus better teachers. If an american but learn kung fu in china from a chinese master,it's pretty possible that he can learn just as good as a chinese boy.

  • " so the superior film just by a little bit is the new karate kid"

" oh bullshit, im going home man."

Okay, that was a very well placed clip.

  • To be honest i think the 2010 one is my favorite in my opinion because it was way more passionate, emotional, and more dramatic. You should do a review for the new one instead of just comparing them i think it will be a good review since the movie was really good to me. And i will never forget the fat guy who was below us in the row of seats going like dang or ooh or ouch every time the poor kid got hit ( Jaden).

  • Prepare to wax off.

  • Haha! Mine Bitches!

  • @owaffs u mad?

  • I can't believe the new "Karate" Kid won in this comparison of the two.

Surely the lack of karate should disqualify it.

Truth is, there wasn't even a need for this reboot to be made.

It was just Will Smith using his own money to produce a film to promote his kid. Well fuck you, because nepotism shouldn't be congratulated.

  • Is this the reason why AVGN hates the NC? :-P

  • Wrong!

  • When the Spider-Man reboot comes out, he should do an old vs. new on those.

  • I watched the new Karate Kid last night and I got to say it's an all right remake.

The action scenes were fun to watch but they sort of deviate from what made the original Karate kid great in the first place was the underdog and coming of age story it portrayed.

  • in the remake, the mum is making a big deal of the coat on the floor cause thats how mr han and the coat`on and off` came together

  • wrong

  • wwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrooooooooooooooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnngggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggg

  • I never saw the new 1 but I freaking love the old 1

  • 21:35 - Mercy's a penis

  • at 14:50 he walks by a hanging potted plant then (off camera) hits the wall with his hands. First time I saw that I thought he knocked his head on the plant. :)

  • THE original is the best

  • The jerk teacher in the original one looks like Patrick Swayze

  • I have also like/love the old movie

  • I saw jackie chan in the trailer and was like "THIS WILL BE AWESOME". Then I saw Jaden Smith sing with Justin Bieber and I was " OMG NOW I CAN'T WATCH A MOVIE WITH JADEN IN IT"...

  • he's from jersey... he should just call his folks there :P

  • Why is the remake called Karate Kid when it's Kung Fu?! MAKES ZERO SENSE PEOPLE!

  • @9intheaftern00n100 dude kung fu and karate are the same fucking thing

  • @dulguunbat Um, not really.

  • @dulguunbat Just because they're both martial arts doesn't make them the same thing. That"s basically like saying Dude boxing and wrestling are the same fucking thing.

  • @9intheaftern00n100 marketing strategy I think... but it is pretty lame indeed

  • @9intheaftern00n100 Pretty simple really. Hollywood is afraid of making anything that is not a remake, reboot, sequel or otherwise part of an existing franchise.

  • Bullshit Bullshit Bullshit. The new karate kid is just an abortion. The old is where its at. Wise old man, growing up, and having a kid move from america to china is more bullshits than one. Fuck new karate kid

  • It was originally called The Kung-Fu Kid, but the title was changed for obvious marketing reasons.

  • daniel san should be hyphenated(if i spelled that right, which i dont think i did). just a heads up, lolz.

trolling comment for the day: check!

  • Thank you, someone who hates Jersey Shore!

  • @wqhhj I hate it too

  • @101superchao I don't see why people like it

  • I did listen to your review, it’s a bit rubbish.

You thought the original wasn’t as good because it didn’t explain enough, I think that says more about you than the film. I don’t think it’s an era thing either, I just think modern audiences are lazy and have just become more dumbed down and need spoon feeding.

I wouldn’t recommend you watch '2001: a space odyssey'.. they don’t explain a lot in that either;_)

  • I dunno it just seems movies like the Karate Kid belonged in the 80s,these days they cant quite pull it off.I watched the new version and it wasnt terrible but if you wanted to watch KK why not just watch the original, did this new one really need to be made? I suppose kids these days would have a hard time relating to 80s movies,it wasnt their childhood.

  • At least the remake was better than The Next Karate Kid!

  • I am wondering, doesn't anyone here know that while Jackie Chan does know kung-fu they were using theatrical kung-fu in this movie, and that you really cant use that to defend yourself and that and the reason Miyagi had daniel doing the wax on wax off wasnt to build his instinct up but to give him muscle memory so his muscles would asutomatically respond without him have to consciously think about what he's doing. That aside I loved both of these movies, I was just wondering if anyone knew that.

  • i have not seen the original but im gonna see it have it on a shelf next room. its mostly because i cant realy compare movies if havent seen both

  • i don't care what anyone says. you can't learn to do a back flippy kick by staring at snakes

  • mercy's a penis

  • i like the new one because i haven't seen the old one

  • Comment removed

  • Ok, I've never seen the original Karate Kid, but like a lot of people I knew about the Wax On, Wax Off thing, and I always thought that it was to keep Daniel's mind off of Karate.

I dunno, it just seems like a sneaky thing that Martial Arts Masters seem to do. It's like the Turtle Hermit in Dragon Ball; he never teaches his pupils any martial arts moves, but he strengthens their bodies with strange jobs.

  • its called karatekid so that everyone would know its inspired by the first movie. Otherwise fanboys would yell: THATS A RIPOFF!.

  • @B0MBALI9 EXACTLY!!! I'm so glad someone finally said what I'v been thinking all along! If one more person asks, "Uh, why is it called karate kid when he's doing kung fu?" I will self-destruct....

  • Why did the 2010 remake called "The Karate Kid" while the boy learns Kung Fu?

IDK maybe the boy learn Karate first? so peoples call him the Karate Kid? then learn Kung Fu? nah just me...

  • @pariastabendesa

because jackie chan insisted on it the movie being called like that. Originally it was meant to be his own movie but it was jackie chan who pushed it to be a karate kid pseudo-remake

  • @pariastabendesa Its called a marketing ploy. Name it after something known as good, and itll sell better.

Though the movie didnt need that ploy in the end. Its still kinda annoying that it was used.

  • @SSJMegla make sense....

  • @pariastabendesa Why was the 1984 movie called the Karate Kid when it was actually about a teenager?

  • @Disneythievesrock Agreed, that really needs an answer

  • @Disneythievesrock You say that like adults dont consider teenagers as kids.

  • @pariastabendesa "The Kung Fu Kid" doesn't exactly roll off the tongue...

  • @pariastabendesa That would make sense. I thought it was because he was the only one who knew Karate, and was thus known for it (not literally known for it of course). Also, it makes more sense for a teacher from China to teach Kung Fu, as it is actually Chinese. Why in the world would a Chinese teacher teach the Japanese art of Karate?

  • @MrCalzilla good point....

  • @pariastabendesa no they just fucked up ~avgn

  • But, hanging up the jacket is a key part of the movie!!! How can you hate on her for that?!

  • Kids..solve your problems by KICKING THE ASS OF THE OTHER KID! morale of all the movies. Old ones win.

  • 5:41-5:44 THANK YOU!!!

  • i love the remake

but there's only 1 thing i can't forgive about the remake

its called The Karate Kid,but its more like The Kung Fu Kid

  • @MegaMonsterZilla

The producers DID think about calling it "The Kung Fu Kid", but then they realized. "Oh shit! If we don't actually call it 'The Karate Kid', the average American viewer will be too stupid to realize that it's a remake of 'The Karate Kid'!".

  • In order to be a man you must have honor and a penis!

  • all bad comments in this video:

    oh that's great

I think you talk to much

but I like that...I like that

what do you want me to do

what bull **** man I'm going home

  • Yeah, the remake was the complete opposite of how stupid I thought it was going to be, thank Jesus. I mean, it WAS well put together, but yes, like NC said, this will probably remain the more known movie because it is a classic, despite the remake being a LITTLE better.

  • To really explain Miyagi's actions for doing the chores to teach Daniel karate I think personally its also a good workout for Daniel to prepare for the tournament. Outdoor work and all builds muscle.

  • erm the new one....... such bullshit

  • I like the original better, mostly because it seems to be more at one with itself. Let me explain. In the remake, there are many elements at play, and there are lots of different ideas and plot lines present - at times, it gets unwieldy and messy. Did no one notice that you never even find out whether the love interest gets into the music school? The remake seemed to be several different films crammed into one. The old one was a tight movie, it knew what its focus was, and it pulled it off well.

  • Cobra Kai FTW!

  • WTF they had a cartoonDX??? How come I nvr knew thisDX??? Jaden smith is annoying as f**k though whereas I could hug Ralph machio & nvr let him go cuz he's so adorable + he's Johnny cadeXD

  • Original wins:\... Partly cuz I like Ralph machio... but the smith kids r annoying as f**k. I haven't seen the original in a while so can't really put in2 words y I like it better srry

  • I didn't think the remake was bad at all.

    Fuck the haters.

  • @Game1ngAssass1n me too

  • @Game1ngAssass1n I don't either. I honestly think the remake (aside from the obvious wrong title) was really good. The explanations of martial arts reminded me alot of a friend of my father's who is an avid martial artist. So yeah, fuck the haters. Let them hate, and we'll just sit back and enjoy our movies!

  • Hero= Agreed?

    Mentor= Agreed

Villain= Old's a Classic. New's a Nightmare (Not bad. Scary). Seriously, a kid with THAT kind of face while he's beating the tar out of you. The Old one just has cowardice... I thought that was supposed to get out of him...?

  • that jersey "show" rapes us all, critic...

  • @1more4carhur It doesn't rape me. It just annoys me to no end. I facepalm when I heard it

  • @1more4carhur *hear it

  • I think a lot of people and directors keep forgetting that Chan can do drama.

  • I'm still annoyed they called the new one Karate Kid, when obviously karate is a japanese martial art and they are in China learning chinese martial arts...

  • @BrandonAngelDragon They originally were going to call it the Kung Fu Kid, but focus groups didn't like the name change.

  • @Theriot6592 Yeah I heard that too, but so what if it doesn't sound good? At least don't make the title misleading... Lots of Karate fans are going to walk in the theater and say WTF!? This ain't Karate!

  • @BrandonAngelDragon Oh, come on, how many people would actually be able to watch people fighting in a movie and tell you what brand of martial art it is?

  • @Theriot6592 Maybe not everyone, but at least it wouldn't lead them into thinking "herp derp, Karate=Chinese lols"

  • i like will smith and jackie fan alot, but i hated the remake for one fuckin reason, justin bieber did a fucking gay song for the movie, theres my reason why i will stay away from the remake forever

  • @LoneRebelX I don't like Bieber, but he doesn't ruin something he's in FOR ONE SONG! If it was the entire vocal soundtrack, I would understand. But no, the makers were smart and made sure he got as little audio spotlight as possible

  • @GammaWALLE still, to me its already tainted, but thats my opionion, looks like an ok movie, but i will never watch

  • @LoneRebelX ...

Did you hear their making it again for the soul purpose of NOT including Justin Bieber in it? :D It's called *Fake Gasp* DVD! :O

  • If it was a movie about a kid learning kung fu it would be better? They did that, it's called Kung fu Panda!

  • wtf. this is bull sh*t. the original is ONE BILLION times better than the stupid remake!!!

  • "What do you want me to do?"

    "Wax on..."

That part broke me in half XD

  • I would actually choose the original, but I was really happy too hear him agree that mister Hans sob story is a bit more compeling. Would you rather live with you child for a number of years and then play a direct part in it's death, or it be in no way your fault but still be really sad.

  • i think karate kid 2010 should be knocked down for the justin beieber song at the end -___-

  • 13:41 "as much as i love these nuts" XD

  • Smith looks like Riley from the Boondocks.

  • original wins. the remake was supposed to be a launch vehicle for will smith jr. the plot was implausible, and it was too violent for a kids film

  • @ieodksnw787 the new one is not exclusively for kids. that should be obvious

  • why did 1984 Miyogi get him to paint his fence and wash his car? he's just a lazy old bastard who would break his back doing it himself

  • Comment removed

  • I Agree with the new one. by the way, when did that Karate kid cartoon come out and was it made in America or china?

  • I prefer the orginal

  • Kids not wife and kid

  • Comment removed

  • 0:32 Best part. he should still do it though

  • Mercy's a penis

  • It still bothers me when they call it The karate kid, when in the remake they learn Kung Fu.

  • I'm not letting this slide. Mr. Miyagi DOES explain why he did it. Did you not see the whole blocking thing after Daniel was fed up with doing that stuff? It, in a way, showed that karate also uses instinct and training, such as how Daniel specifically was told to do it in a certain way. The wax on wax off? Circle blocks. The painting the fence? High blocks and low blocks. It does make sense.

  • mercy a penis lol

  • The one with Jackie Chan is such an egregious case of artefact titling. I fucking loved it though.

  • actual major motion picture.

  • To be fair, marketing strategy dictates that if you name your movie after the classic, people will get interested just for the sake of comparison. Also, reading/saying "The Karate Kid" vs. "The Kung Fu Kid" makes a difference. "The Karate Kid" looks more aesthetically pleasing due to the variation of word size and rolls off the tongue more fluidly. Also, if the studio had named it "The Kung Fu Kid", the movie would sound more like one of the low-budget ripoff films (see "Gordy" review) than an

  • i didnt feel like mr han learned anything. i only watched the movie once. so maybe i should watch it again. but like when he was crying and stuff in the car all dre did was start practicing kungfu with him again. and maybe that references something earlier in the film and it makes sense. but i didnt recognize it the first time through. dre's character depth and complexity is dramatically out dwarfed by mr han's and it doesnt seem like dre could do anything because his character is so much lesser

  • /watch?v=foZLxVNXU4w the crane kick FO REAL

  • Usually its very EZ for a new film/remake to be better than the original as longas its cast well and not cheaply done or done with the wrong motives, or just a rip off or make a quick dollar project, but again usually the remakes have the advantage b/c they almost always have more money and they ahve the benefits of newness, new technology and ALL thats been larned in film in the time gap between the 2 pictures. AND the BIG thing they can leanr from &prevent whatever flaws the original made

  • @CubbieBear1980

This actually stretches back to the 80s. The 80s remakes of "The Thing" and "The Fly" are far superior to the 40s/50s originals.

For modern examples of remakes that are superior to the originals, I say "Clash of the Titans", "The Wolf Man", "Fright Night", "The Mummy" and "King Kong".

  • wow is it just me or (when he puts them up side by side) that NEW cover/poster gets BUTT compared to that dated old one! lol. Dont' get it twisted the old one is not BAD (like the film) but that new cover art/poster is just super cool!

  • His moms "nagging her son to pick up his jacket" THATS 1 of your complaints against her?? WOW you didn't like/get how Myagi taught Daniel by having him do chores and you think that Dre's Mom was witching and annoying by telling hom to do something as SIMPLE as picking up his jacket (no wonder so many white kids are bratts, you don't have any discipline and expect to be told to do ANYthing huh? the world is your playground) IF you don't get these two things then you dont' get EITHER of the films!

  • TWO things; I guess he has to make a joke about it but if he does not get the ide of WHY Myagi taught him the wy he did then he needs to go back and watch tme movie again either that or he'll NEVER get it. ALSO the whole thing about what he said about the new Karate Kid and Jayden Smith's Dre and how 'its kinda COOL to get beat up as a kid' and how 'atleast no other kid will F with you' UHH what school did HE go to?? There is NOthing "COOL' about gettin the crap VIOLENTLY beat outta U in China!!

  • FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK YOUUUUUU MR MIYAGI OVER THAN RETARDO JACKIE CHAN

  • the crane kick is awesome.. look at lyoto machida KO over randy couture, no can defend

  • @minimalist34 what??? look at what?? PM me a link or something b/c I have no ida what you aer talkin about. and YES the crane kick is awesome and the NC knows NOTHINB about fighting, martial arts and karate if he thinks the crane kick (jump kick or not, a rose by any other name) is that easy to blcok/defend against, he's crazy!!

  • @CubbieBear1980 /watch?v=XJwcgXu2a18 the crane kick

  • @Dioliveson55 lmao

  • Was called Kung Fu Kid where I live.

  • @VerterosGaming and where is that ? where do you live? Also what are your expert opinons baout it?? What film is better and why?

  • [Disclaimer] I didn't watch the original so my preference WILL be biased [End disclaimer].

But even if I were to watch the original, I'd probably prefer the new one as well.

    [Raises anti-haters shield]

  • @TheOtherNeutrino BARRARGH YOUR OPINION SUCKS HARRRRD AARRGH

    jk

  • Every time I see daniel from the original I think "STAY GOLD PONYBOY" XD

  • He TOTALLY needs to review the karate kid cartoon.

  • the old karate kid used karate to an extent but in new kart kid it openly states that they use KUNG FU not karate

  • Comment removed

  • They ALWAYS have some awesome playing Mr.Miyagi (don't know how to spell, plz tell me how to spell if possible)

  • ...There was a Karate kid cartoon?

    I WANNA WATCH IT!

  • Call me crazy, but I actually expected Nostalgia Critic to say something about a JUSTIN BIEBER song playing in the end of the new one :$

  • I like how critic put it. If I had to chose, i'd chose the newer one by a hair as well. The old one is still awesome and a classic. I just love when they went to train at the temple in the new one. The temple scene was just SOOO cool!

  • he should do an 'old vs new ' on clash of the titans

  • @frakenawesome555

GAH, I was gonna suggest that!!

  • I also think they should have called it the Kung-Fu Kid, but I suppose it would have taken away from the whole "reboot" thing. Anyway, very good review, and I have to say that I agree with the outcome! I grew up in the '80s and therefore loved the original for all it was, cheesy and all, but I truly loved the 2010 film. I went in to it with an open mind, and was very pleasantly surprised.

  • Jacky Chan beats up kids in the movie! hhhheeeeellllloooooo!!!! it fucking sucks assssss! And Jacky Chan dont know real Kung Fu, he knows opera style kung fu. Its not the real thing. just flashy shit!

  • Its funny how everyone agrees on that the old one is WWWWWWWWAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYY better, and then after watching some over hype youtube critic they change their opinion.

  • @MasterNinja1990 It's called debate, and consists of a person showing their opinion and why they think so. And for the record, Jackie Chan has been in a huge amount of kung fu and karate movies and does all his own stunts, so I highly doubt that he knows nothing about kung fu.

  • It happens to be that I know for a fact that he knows nothing about real kung fu. He only knows opera style. which is flashy stunts that looks good on stage but that would never work in real combat. So he is a fake. Sorry if he was your idol or anything..

  • @MasterNinja1990 Jackie Chan is well trained in many martial arts as well as several variations of kung fu: North Shaolin (from opera school), Wing Chun, Tong Long kung fu, and Bak Mei kung fu. he also studied boxing, judo, hapkido, and tkd, so no I somehow seriously doubt Jackie Chan is a fake.

  • @MasterNinja1990 It's funny because you're talking shit, you don't know anything, and now you get.....OWNED BITCH!!

  • 1. Its called karate kid but they do kung fu in the movie

    2. Jacky chan beats up a bunch of kids

    3. The kid says "you are like yoda and I am like a jedi"

    4. jacky Chan is not even av real kung fu master, he only knows opera style kung fu which is just for show

    5. the kids special attack is hiting the other persons boobs

Is this what you call a good movie? then I feel sorry for you my friend

  • @MasterNinja1990

    1. Who cares? 97% of Americans don't know the difference

    2. He prevents them from beating the shit out of Jaden.

    3. Star Wars FTW

    4. See number 1

    5. Um, he kicks him in the face....

So yes, it was a GREAT movie.

  • And adults usally beats kids up to stop them when they start a fight? What planet do you live on. I chose to stand by my last comment. Thank you

  • @MasterNinja1990

Dude, there were a bunch of kids, all kung fu students, ready to beat the shit out of Jackie AND Jaden, he was defending himself just as much. It's NOT the same as Jackie coming upon a random group of kids and beating them up, thats what you're making it sound like. Plus as Jaden put it, "how did you make them fight each other?". He didn't even beat them up to begin with...

  • oh right. so next time my brothers children are fighting I will just kick the shit out of them or encourage them to fight each other. I am sure all the other adults will understand your and Jacky´s fine logic.

  • @MasterNinja1990

your analogies don't work at all, there's a difference b/w your brothers children, and a random group of crazy kung fu students ready to beat the shit out of you. Just telling them to stop beating up Jaden clearly wasn't gonna do anything... >_>

  • You think like a kid. We adults handle things diffrently. I think I made a very good point with my former comment. And I stand by it. Thats the end of that, so stop talking to me. Have a nice day my friend

  • @MasterNinja1990 China. That is all.

  • @MasterNinja1990

Dipping your balls into the face of your opponent doesn't work in real combat either, yet that doesn't stop millions of deluded people from thinking that knowing MMA would help them in a real fight.

  • What are you talking about?

  • @MasterNinja1990

Every single MMA fight I've seen involves one of the fighters wrapping his legs on the opponent's head so his crotch usually ends up in the opponent's face. They call it a "triangle hold".

My point is that, if you try that in a REAL fight, you get your ass kicked.

  • @Disneythievesrock Jackie Chan doesn't star in Karate movies I'm afraid. Therein lies the misconception many people have when it comes to martial arts. Karate is Japanese.,Mr Chan is obviously not.

  • @alwaysxnever Sorry, typo. Which is interesting, because if Mr. Miyagi was Chinese why did he know karate rather than kung fu?

  • @Disneythievesrock Pretty ironic considering who you're replying to.

  • @elmstreetslasher9780 how is the remake horrible it's pretty good I really enjoyed it still the original was good I liked the remake better

  • He does make very good points and wheteher you like it or dislike either one you have to admit The Karate Kid remake is one of the better remakes. It shows that the people who made the new one actually tried and worked pretty hard on it.
