I figure if I watch this video another 9 times....I'll be visitor 100,000. Now that I think of it...dam good idea. The count is at 99,991 at this moment. I"m signing off and resigning in for the next half hour. I also realize that I was the first person to post a message to Bill on this video. Sounds cool to me...number 1 and and number 100.000. Thanks to the BIg E for his playing, Thanks to Bill for his generous videos
I was performing at the Sheraton Northlake on LaVista Road and 285 in Atlanta at this time (eight years worth). Buddy was attending a gathering of steel players in Atlanta. My friend, and steel guitar player, Tommy Dodd, brought Buddy in on Sunday afternoon to do a steel guitar "workshop" and concert. A moment in history:) We repeated the program for a couple of years. A musical genius.
For me the steel guitar started with the late, great Bob Dunn and ended with The BIg E. If someday you find yourself 300 miles away from where Buddy is playin' take the side trip..., you will NOT be disappointed. Where Buddy goes great side- men follow. Buddy has helped to bring a jazz composition sound to the steel guitar and within a country music parameter no less. I like to call him Mister Loosey-Goosey on the steel.
Bill, it;s great that you have posted these for all to enjoy. What can you say about buddy that hasn't already been said, except he's the finest steel guitarist that has ever drawn breath, and all of the pros would agree with that I'm sure. Thanks again.
Oh god I used to heare him play that song at Steel Convention in St. Louis ...It gives this girl chills always has always will Goooo Buddy Love youer Laugh...
I have followed Mr Big E for about 45 years i had the pleasure to meet him in St Lewis about 15 years was supprised he talks to you as if- he- was just anybody i also got to meet Doud and the Great Jerry Byrd .Boy was he a Byrd ha ha. Buddy played the song night life i always loved this song and still do it has to be one of the best ever done by anyone. Hope you can keep up the good workwe love you you ar the man. from a friend Buddy Jenkins
@EdwJenkins Thank you for the kind words. Buddy and I chat back and forth by email about once a month. He has retired from playing, but he is still "The BIG E"
@EdwJenkins-Well phrased. This may well be the smoothest, most tasteful steel I have ever heard and being from a family of guitarist's I've seen many, many examples of fine steel playing. Ahhhhh Jazz----Music of the Gods...........
This song and Buddy's playing on Judy Collins' 'Someday Soon' R the best . . . got me interested in playing steel when I was 13 yrs young (yes, Rusty & Neil) about a hundred years ago.
buddy is my hero.had not it been for he and shot jackson no tellin what we would be playin.if you ever get a chance to meet buddy do it.hes so humble and nice.i told its his fault for playin pedal steel because of all he did with price
buddy is my all time fav.hes the absolute reason i play pedal steel.his intonation and technique is awe inspiring.got to meet him a few years ago hes truley a steel players friend loved listening to his storys
i still can't believe that a country singer like ray price would cut a blues song. the chord structure is wonderful. buddy hypnotizes me with his genius.
I just wanted to give "my comment" on this amazing blues oriented song. Buddy's always been my "main man" on steel, but this guitar player with him is no slouch in my book . I love the notes and direction the guy is playing in. He doesn't take "the chances" Buddy does, but he plays wonderfully, and has my endorsement all the way. Marc Trainor.
Thank God, thank God, for Buddy Emmons, and thank God Bill Furgason had enough sense to record him at one of these steel guitar shows, where us steel players just figured, would go on forever, but you know it's good to have an "archieve" of this stuff. Marc Trainor.
@daofktr This is my all time favorite steel song, and I was there at this taping. Duke Dumas was indeed playing guitar, and although he played some bass during the show, it was my husband Wayne Smith that played on this song and a lot of others this set. Just so ya know...
@daofktr I know this question was posted four years ago, but the answer needs to be correct: Who is playing bass with Buddy Emmons on this tune? It is Wayne Smith of Atlanta, Ga...Duke Dumas was playing guitar on this one..he's on the right in the video...just so ya know!
There's only one Buddy Emmons on the planet, and even though there's some other great players out there, I'll bet they turn their heads when Buddy plays too. Marc Trainor.
does anyone know where i can get copies of a tv show titled"nashville alive".It was on Tnn {before it was spike).Buddy was featured a lot and it was on for 2 years I think?
One can listen to the Big E all the time and his endless style of licks and the great touch and tone all speak of his reputation as the World's Foremost Steel Guitar Player" is justified.......
This is about as good as it gets. Although Buddy is highly considered in some circles. It is a shame some one of his caliber is not more widely acclaimed. As understand it he also was key to the development of the Pedal Steel. Its almost like Les Paul, Leo Fender and Jimi Hendrix packed into a single personage.. and yet down to earth person.. a true American hero, in my book.
The guitar players name is Duke Dumas. He has been in Nashville for a long time. He is better known for his bass playing. He is an old friend of mine and a very nice guy.

Wow, the guitarist is using an Electra!
Good move.
And Buddy Emmons isn't bad at all either.
I might buy a steel just to mess around with, see what I can do.

This is actually a Willie Nelson Song....not Ray Price. Price just made it famous.
djangoph1le 3 years ago
you got it wrong dood Willie wrote it Ray Price was the first to cut it and have a hit with it
crusty770 2 years ago
When I first started learning to play the steel and built my own, coming to a Earnest Tubb & Ray Price dances I was allowed to sit
or stand next to Buddy as he played. He always made it seem so effort less, smooth, sweet, pleasant also great to talk to if not
playing or involved other wise, really a great guy.
