if you bring it in to your dealer, they have to cover it and replace it for free due to the recall they had on them i bought my 2010 chevy in june of 2010 and two weeks of driving it i pulled in to homegoods and couldnt get the key out so i ran straight to my dealer fixed it in 15 minutes no charge so if u have this problem go straight to your dealer and they will fix it for free.
All I needed was the first 0:25 of this video. I'm not the kind of person to spend a hundred or so to turn my key if I can just press under my steering wheel.
I have to thank you for this video. I got the old gearshifter out and found that the pin had dropped underneath. Although I had bought the replacement part for $187, I shall be returning it because the plastic piece wasn't broken. I wouldn't have known where to start though without this video, so thanks very much
I have a 2009 HHR and my key is currently stuck in my car. It didn't start off as that being the problem though.. It started off as a flicker of all electronics on my dashboard, through to my radio. Sunday it went so far that I had to pull over because I lost my lights in the flickering and everything shut off but the gas and brake (thank God) Today, it did it again and hasn't come back on.. Any ideas what that could be? Thanks for your video
@ErksAdventures I would take a look at the connections at the battery in the back where the tire is. i would clean the terminals real good. take the connectors off and clean them real good. Your battery could be dieing also maybe take it to a place and have them check the battery out. advance autoparts will do that free. i would also check after that your positive connection under the hood to see if its tight.
@doransignal I had my car towed this morning, can't get the back hatch opened up to even look at the battery because my auto door locks don't work. :/ So now there are tire drag marks on my driveway and it's at the dealer right now. I'm pretty sure I'm still under warranty, but I know there is a recall on the shifter, it's just not a critical mass recall, so they don't announce it. I think it's stupid we have to pay for their mistakes as long as people aren't in accidents for it!
Thanks for the video. This just happened to me and I thought i would have to leave the key in the car. I wonder why Chevy put a manual release button under the steering column? Failure by design?
@unwinsis yea it was all of a sudden and at least the local autoparts store knew about the manual release button. GM makes you buy the whole thing you cant just buy the plastic piece. it is a poor design but the new one had a metal sleeve where the old one did not. i hate all of the cheap plastic stuff in cars nowadays.
ive found the panel to take off but i cant find the switch to press...

HHR's are MUCH better than Cadillacs. No one should ever buy a Cadillac.
