Speaking as one whose college minor was Spanish, it's pretty clear to me that Eddie didn't learn this lovely song phonetically. He sounds as though he had some knowledge of and comfort in the language:) --
Nice song. I think he performed in the circus in Mexico after WWII. Maybe that's where he fell in love with the culture. I think his wife was Hispanic, too.

Mrs. Eddie (aka Margo) was, indeed, Hispanic-- Mexican. She and Eddie sing a few bilingual duets on their "September Song" album; maybe I can make a medley.
Margo played a stereotypical Latina housekeeper in "Who's Got the Action?", a 1962 Dean Martin-Lana Turner comedy in which Eddie co-stars in one of his patented "best friend" roles (but the two share no scenes).
