no elder of tribes or famiiles thats bullshit if so that of they didn't have money to oay and they were being taken by force and that doesn't derail to the hate and violence by most white peole not even nessarly their slave master
This nation isn't violent because it was founded on violence. Life itself is violent. From the microscopic life in a petri dish, to the depths of the ocean, to the the skies and forests, there is nothing but endless violence and death. It is an elemental part of life. Only we humans are foolish enough to think the natural order of things is something to fight against. There will always be violence. No matter the culture, country or creed. It will never be stopped.
Violence is everywhere these days. All across the world. I live in the UK, and am 21 and already in my life i have witnessed a murder and dozens of fights. Its a shame when people feel that the only way to gain respect is to use violence. Great video.
You are an extraordinarily insightful and brave woman. What you say is absolutely true. There is a legacy of violence everywhere Europe has traversed in permanently sequestering other continents away from the indigenous populations. Ultimately, all evil deeds will turn back upon the perpetrators for the Universe will demand justice. Babylon, Greece, and Rome fell. America is headed in the same direction.
Isn't it better to actually look at these bad things in the world directly than cover them over. You can't deny they are there or its like allowing it to happen like some 3rd party to the violence. Maybe we need to get used to seeing it and deal with it on a much wider level because if everybody was watching I don't think most tyrant characters of the world would have the courage to do what they are doing.
Theres violence everywhere in the world and we barely even glimpse 1% of whats going on, on the news/media. The world would rather turn a blind eye and believe none of it is happening, because if you register its happening it makes your world you've created for yourself seem so small and out of control.
Maybe the negativity of things like Hip-hop is almost like a way of crying out to see what we deny to see.
Don't you hate it when you have written somethings and it didn't get posted because it went over the 500 character thing. Then days later you realize everything said never got posted. I'm not sure if I remember all what I said but I'll try again in 500 characters.
Yes, I do hate that. Here's what I do. When I type a long comment, I highlight and copy it so that if it doesn't make it I can paste it in and try again, with adjustments. It's irritating and time consuming a little but no longer trying to remember what the heck I wrote!
You were right about some things, but the way women are portrayed is not anybody else's fault, it's their's. No one forces those women to be in the videos, THEY CHOOSE TO BE!!!!
That's certainly true. On the other hand, sometimes people are conditioned to think a certain way and to make certain choices. This conditioning often results in behavior that stems from a conditioned lack of self-respect and understanding of themselves and the "greater picture" of life. It starts somewhere. I think we MUST ask why do people make those choices.
If you feel like looking at more of my videos, my Being Black and a Woman talks about this conditioning in depth. I was a person I would NEVER choose to be now because I didn't know things I know now and I didn't even know that I had been taught to view myself a certain way. It's a two-parter and they're long but just an idea if you're interested in this subject. Thanks for your comments.

My Grand Father spoke of the clothes given out in a market place long ago in Nigeria (b4 we were bunched together in this reservation called Nigeria)..
according to him all the people who wore those clothes caught a disease which caused sores all over their body ,their friends and family also had it and millions died.

Part 0~ You know you get me going all the time. I want to leave like twenty comments but I am going to have some self control,lol...First, Great video! Your right.
Part 1~ Our nation was founded on Violence. I remember a pastor saying..."How many bible carrying White Americans made it to heaven during the slave period?" When we are talking about 100's and 100's of years, not too many. This nation has always had violence. The difference between violence today vs, fifty years ago, is man's neighbor of the same skin color had his or her respect.
Although, white man treated white man with respect for years, he didnt with any race outside of his own. Lack of conscious has grown but in my opinion, man has always lacked one. ~Raven
Part 2~ Yes, less murders, rapes, robberies, etc., back then, but racism surged. Mans heart is now more hard because even with his own, he now treats his own skin color neighbor with indifference.
Frustrating subject. Human nature is what it is. Only selective breeding or drugging of the world population will change our nature. Neither obviously will likely happen. Human aggression actually is a useful trait also (too big a topic to discuss here), but biologically makes sense in many instances.Trouble is when it becomes generalized to wrong areas.
wow this vid got me thinkin what is Violence and what causes it is Violence just another way we heart each other are is it the humans selfish desires ther needs ther sadnest ther anger ther instinct to live and so on deep 5/5
I totally get what you are saying, I've been mugged and worse and it's petrifying, for real. But I hope you know there is hip hop that is loving and peaceful and uplifting! If you don't know Michael Franti & Spearhead, Ozomatli, Macy Gray, Jurassic5, check them out, they all bring brotherhood to the mix. I can't stand the bitch slapping, gun toting gangsta rap, it freezes my blood. So, thanks for this video today. You are a brave, beautiful woman.
Violent nation compared to who? Do you know how violent most of the world is without violent movie? What nation wasn't created through violence?
American Indians suffered no worse and much better than most other civilizations throughout history.
They didn't suffer anything compared to the Gauls or the Irish or the Polish or the Russians who were brutalized regularly for much longer than the Indians.
And those are just small examples. The ethnic violence in Africa and the Arab. The countless millions that died in Asia and other nations because of communism.
The world is a violent place. It always has been.
I agree that this world is a violent place. That doesn't mean that genocide is right, or that killing your neighbor is OK. "They didn't suffer anything compared to..." I beg to differ.
It's the suffering that's not right, for any race, any nation.
I'm not saying it's right at all. But that's just the way it. Making excuses for violence in hip hop by blaming movies is just really ridiculous IMHO.
The millions of fans that listen to many other kinds of music watch the same kinds of movies and the artists and fans don't act the same way as many do in hip hop.
Actually, not compared to anyone. Just violent. You're right, the world is violent but I bet that no group on earth is comforted by having their violent treatment not as bad as some other group. To every group, it's the worse it can be.
The world is a very violent place and it always has been. It doesn't matter what race, religion or area.
The American Indians were some of the brutal socities to exist. Leaving aside the Aztecs and the Incans who were as racist and imperialistic as the Nazis. The American Indians were constantly at war with each other, enslaved each other and constantly took land from each other. They even exterminated other tribes like the Calusa for example, long before Europeans showed up.
Bearing that in mind, how does it move us forward to say that America was founded on murder? I mean, what does such talk do but provide a sense of justification to those who harbor murderous sentiments towards America?
I think it may be wise and productive to know the truth of our history. Then can it be examined in a realistic way, if one's aim is to prevent or lessen the violence which is just too rampant today in our own neighborhoods. I don't want to get into "those who harbor murderous sentiments towards America" here. We are talking ABOUT Americans, IN America.
"I think it may be wise and productive to know the truth of our history."
Obviously. Is it your opinion that said truth can be accurately summarized by the claim that America was founded on murder?
"if one's aim is to prevent or lessen the violence"
OK, so where we are is "America was founded on murder", and where we want to go is the prevention/lessening of violence. How do you propose we get there from here?
I loves how u commented on natives. they're the real americans. i'm not even aboriginal and i feel a deep hate and anger for the senseless, hateful, evil men that did that to such a noble people. The fact that u even bothered to talk and remmeber abbout them is a reflection on how kind a person u really are. good work
thank you for keeping a more positive perspective in life, when most of us (including myself at times) cannnot. i wish to have more people like you in my life, but here you are! hope to see more videos and thanks again!
This was a great video...and thank you. It really helped me...my friend earlier this week had taken a sword and slashed up his father. And...it just shocked me in disbelief...I couldnt believe he had done it.. But now, looking at our society, I can really see why.
Politicians don't want to stop the violence. They are the ones who are profiting off of it (Well, them and the heartless corporations). Religion isn't any better either. They simply use fear to keep the masses in line. I'm not saying all religious people are bad but with the way they act they pretty much lose all credibility.
It's called Genocide. Every animal(includeing us)does it. Good points though. U r right, Hip Hop is just the reflection, not the problem, of how this society is no matter the race. The foundation/soil is violent and shady, then whatever grows from it will be the same as the soil/foundation.
Spokenlife has more insight into the realities of our world than anyone I've listened to in a long, long time. She has, through this video, changed my thinking about hip-hop music because the points she makes are right on target. Whenever I feel alone in my thinking or need inspiration, I will watch Spokenlife's videos. I'd like to see her published worldwide so others can listen to her voice of reason.
Thank you, Spokenlife, for a refuge of sanity through your words!
Another great message and words to make you think. I agree with everything you said 100%! Yes we do live in a violent society some areas more violent than others. I myself do not know how to change it or how to stop it. All I can do is be true to myself and as always "Treat people the way I would want to be treated"..thanks for doing this vid!
The book of Revelation says "The love of many shall wax cold...For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom...Don't be troubled...For those who endure to the end shall be saved..." All I have to say is "ENDURE."
I have a lot to say on the issue. But it's 2:50 in the morning and I can't properly articulate it. Long story short, I'm a firm believer in pacifism and forgiveness. I have the word "Redemption" tattooed on my back, so I feel it's never too late to change the road you're on.
Oh, 16-year-olds see a LOT of things that adults are desensitized to. Teenagers most certainly "get it" and what we adults need to realize is that teenagers are WATCHING EVERYTHING WE DO! My teenage sons -- I know they don't miss a thing! Keep staying awake. And thanks for your comments.
Check out Beyond Good and Evil from Challenging Media. Diane Levin talks about this starting at childhood. She's a former professor of mine, and mentor. She looks at toys, and media...
I agree with everything you said... Hip-hop spreads violence, hip-hop instigates violence, but by no means did hip-hop START violence. That's one reason I hate our country so much. What good is "freedom", at the price we pay?
Freedom? When innocent people are being convicted of crimes they didn't do? When Native Americans are being forced to stay on reservations (as you mentioned)? No, I don't think it's any kind of freedom. It's a warped freedom. I'm aware about many cultures and countries, and what's sad is that the world believes that America is the land of opportunity, of freedom. Even as a sixteen year old, I can see how warped our country is, and it's sad.
I have Cherokee in me and my cousin(best friend) husband is Native Indian and grew up on the reservation. Your wrong about Indians being force to live there. They prefer to live amongst their race. They feel like outsiders away from their culture. ~Raven
Well, I'm sorry if I offended you in any way... My mother's best friend is Native American, and she was forced to live on a reservation for years. I'm sure many do feel more at home with their own race, but she did not like living there, but was forced to do so anyway... I based my assumption off of that. =)
ConceivedSorrow,,,,I was not offended at all. Truly. I am sure some Indians feel the way you mentioned. Its just they are the minority. What is really sad is that they would feel like an outsider and not trust a nations people but since they are the landowners whose been discarded, I can see why. ~Raven
No, you're wrong. I don't hurt people. So I don't cause violence. And I'm not an idiot. I have EVERY right to free speech. Therefore, I can say that our country is a piece of shit that's screwing itself into the ground, and the most you can do is leave a comment calling me names without backing it up. Good job.
As a practical matter, you do indeed have the right to embolden terrorists; but it's not right to embolden terrorists...which is what people like you, John Kerry and Ted Kennedy do.
People like me? Because you know everything about me, and know exactly what I'm like, isn't that right? No, you're wrong. Everyone hates. Some hate more strongly than others. But I'm sure, if you think about it, there is someone or something somewhere that you hate, even if just a little bit. Think before you type next time.
Even if this were Iran, hating it would be the act of a fool... and not only is this a far better country to live in than Iran, it's the best country on the planet.
Ah. See, there's your problem. If you honestly believe that, then you must be extremely uninformed about A) other countries, or B) the true nature of the US. The fact that I hate America has nothing to do with whether I do or don't hurt people. Me saying that I hate America doesn't hurt anyone. People who agree give me a thumbs up. People who don't argue with me until I realize that the person is hopeless and repeating the same things over and over again, then I move on. End of story.
Right. Well, let me just end this by saying that I really don't care what you think, and that I'm sorry you seem to have nothing at all better to do with your life than insult a sixteen year old over the internet, when your profile says you're fifty-three. Also, judging by the type of person you seem to be, I'm sure you'll respond to this comment. However, I think I've spammed spokenlife's video enough.
Thank you. ^^ I was surprised this screenname was available when I registered it, actually. And thanks for supporting me. I really wasn't trying to start a fight of any sort on here.
But this may sound hollow, being that I am from a small center where violence is uncommon; but people can change and do all the time. Social mindedness is growing and more people are learning to live in peace and harmony.
But all that said, the western world has a long way to go. A very long way. Thanks for making us think a little.
I agreed on everything except the part about spike lee being accurate in his movie making....perhaps what Malcolm X said what exactly what you said...but his movies are usually one sided...and from knowing people who have worked with him....I cannot agree in his preciseness...I can say he is a brilliant man who makes movies very very well....but not necessarly acurate.

ConceivedSorrow 4 years ago
Is it EVEN freedom?
spokenlife 4 years ago

~Raven

"That's one reason I hate our country so much."
Idiots like you cause violence.
charlietcc 4 years ago
No, you're wrong. I don't hurt people. So I don't cause violence. And I'm not an idiot. I have EVERY right to free speech. Therefore, I can say that our country is a piece of shit that's screwing itself into the ground, and the most you can do is leave a comment calling me names without backing it up. Good job.
ConceivedSorrow 4 years ago
"I don't hurt people."
Anyone who hates, hurts people. Period.
"I have EVERY right to free speech."
As a practical matter, you do indeed have the right to embolden terrorists; but it's not right to embolden terrorists...which is what people like you, John Kerry and Ted Kennedy do.
charlietcc 4 years ago
People like me? Because you know everything about me, and know exactly what I'm like, isn't that right? No, you're wrong. Everyone hates. Some hate more strongly than others. But I'm sure, if you think about it, there is someone or something somewhere that you hate, even if just a little bit. Think before you type next time.
ConceivedSorrow 4 years ago
"Because you know everything about me"
You claim to hate America. That's enough.
Even if this were Iran, hating it would be the act of a fool... and not only is this a far better country to live in than Iran, it's the best country on the planet.
charlietcc 4 years ago

"If you honestly believe that, then you must be extremely uninformed about A) other countries, or B) the true nature of the US."
I'm sure your sense of intellectual superiority will get you very far in life, kid. ;)
"Me saying that I hate America doesn't hurt anyone."
Yes, it does. I know you don't understand it, and maybe never will.
"then I move on."
There's an idea. Since this is such a horrible country, might I suggest Iran or North Korea or Zimbabwe?
charlietcc 4 years ago

So, while I'd love to continue this fine, intellectual, and meaningful argument... Real life calls.

"insult a sixteen year old over the internet"
Some people just need their cages rattled, even if they're teenagers. And you're one of them.
Happy trails, kid. ;)

How do we go from violence to non-violence? I am going to start with me. Thanks for video. 5/5 Cheers!
2of6Solutions 4 years ago
You made me think I must say.
But this may sound hollow, being that I am from a small center where violence is uncommon; but people can change and do all the time. Social mindedness is growing and more people are learning to live in peace and harmony.
But all that said, the western world has a long way to go. A very long way. Thanks for making us think a little.
