  • If you can't work with limitations than you're not a very creative person and frankly you should really consider a different career path.

  • @EverettDudgeon138 I have to disagree with that. I managed pretty well in those limitations. It's okay to express your frustrations toward a format, it doesn't mean you suck working with it. Can't we just have fun and make fun of things sometimes?

  • @colinrac What I'm saying is real creativity is done with limitations. Anyone can shoot forever with digital and fix everything in post, it takes a creative person to be able to tell a story in 2 minutes, shoot it in sequence and work around the limitations with their ingenuity rather than having everything given to them.

  • @EverettDudgeon138 Stating the obvious - that's the point of going to film school and using these equipment.

  • @colinrac Discipline.

  • @colinrac Plus it's not obvious as most "filmmakers" chose to "Fix it later".

  • @EverettDudgeon138 And look at my film CHROMA in my videos.. Made with Bolex.

  • isn't Bolex made in Switzerland?

  • I'm at MSUM, Moorhead on exchange from England. I'd never even heard of a Bolex before I came here, I'd be glad if I never heard of one again...

  • haha awesome, just like up here at York University.

  • I was at concordia tooooooo it pissed me off so much AMAZING VIDEO

  • i know exactlyyy what he;s going thru lol same school!

  • This is great, as a first year communication studies student, i to have to deal with the stress of dealing with a bolex, although it is amazing, it is really stressing.

My Favorite line: "I don't want to do some "wanna be David lynch" experimental film this year. " Genius!

  • this is soo hilarious! Hitler does not like film.

is there more videos like this??

  • ..'just like tarkovsky ...' ;)

i don't know about the subject (an american school ?) but i wish you the best in 16 mm or any format

    thanks

  • Fkn brilliant!!!! <3

  • "Please book the rewind crank..." Genius... pure genius! :-)

  • Priceless

  • Film and Digital both have their advantages; It just depends what you're looking for. I loved this video!

  • If you go to 16mmpro.com you can see, save, and print Bolex manuals and view other stuff about 16mm filmmaking. A really good site for movie camera manuals is apecity.com. .

  • Nice editing work. I sell Bolex and other 16mm movie cameras and lenses on eBay. Type VBMC in eBay search (store: 16mmpro). I have used a REX 5 several times and I think that is the whole point, it is supposed to be difficult to use, you learn from your mistakes.

  • I own a Lumix GH1 and for the money ($1000.00 on Amazon) you can make full HD movies with this camera, however there is something about film that modern cameras can not replicate. If you are a student and you call the Kodak Store phone number listed on one of my eBay movie camera listings you can get a 30% discount on film, if you fax them your student id.

  • Hitler doesnt like bolexes? Ok.. now he's truly evil.

Ps. It's great that they force you to use 16mm in your first year, anyone can shoot an hour of footage on a 5D, but it takes true skill to tell a story on that 2 and a half minute roll of BW reversal.

  • @fredNielssen Bolex's are great I agree, but it's always fun to laugh at these machines and how old and tricky they are. It's a good learning process to try the old-fashion way. It was a good experience.

  • @smogfilms Yeh, I had interesting memories of using a bolex on my first student short, with a lens who's close focus distance was 5', in a 5x3' bathroom, fun...

  • @fredNielssen absolutely! They should force you to use 16mm during the first two years, btw... (if we're talking about a 4 years education)

  • @fredNielssen That's why the Russians hauled ass to Berlin. They didn't need fancy gadgets to kick the so-called technically advanced Germans, since their own gear was hardier and made to last.

On a serious note, 16mm is good as I learned it on the Aaton and Arriflex SRII. Now Pro8mm is expanding the gates of Super 8 cameras from 4:3 to something wider and putting 35mm-quality stocks into Super 8mm cartidges.

  • @fredNielssen

He might actually prefer MiniDV to 16mm? Maybe he should reconsider his career path.

  • that was hysterical, never used a steenbeck, but bolexes are tough to use, despite how much fun they are

  • OMG. This has made my year! I've gotten made like that at the Steenbeck, and for many different reasons that are ALL stated there.

THANK YOU FOR THE VIDEO. <3

  • LOL!

  • This is amazing!!!

  • Yeah, the bowlex is a bit tough 4 beginner's. Making them start on that can be discouraging for film noobs. Good luck though!

  • GÉNIAL!

  • Even Mini-DV!!!! hahahaha

  • This soo has to be shown at the year end screening .... it's great !!!

  • Blury as fuck! hahhah vraiment cool

  • man you've got to be an animation geek of concordia to laught like I did, Braaavo

  • Full as hell! Well done i'm a first-year student and i had all problems possible on the bolex. 15/10!!!

  • haha nice one :P

  • Hitler went into the future. He went in the sixties and came back to the forties. AWESOME! ; )

  • He did that in ALL the videos of him on youtube.

  • wow, this is EXACTLY what went throught my mind 2 years ago...

    exactly

    great job!

    p.s.: you can shoot 35mm in 3rd ;-)

  • I actually love Bolex + Steenbeck combo! But this was brilliant, good job. Now let's whip out the Cartoni.

  • don't worry, we are going to watch persona tonight....hahahah!

  • HA HA HA HA !

  • Hahaha, I loved, Colin. Realy funny!

  • Hitler is so overreacting lol!!!
