@theROFLpanda rifled barrels can fire HESH rounds, smoothbore barrels are slightly better at firing APFSDS rounds. It depends what you're trying to defeat, and each system suits its tank well.

Do you people even know what ERA is? It stands for Exlosive Reactive Armour, it isn't inside the T-90 at all. It was first used on T-72s, Russians tend to use add-on squares of it, some-times on top of ballistic matting, the add-on armour kit for the T-72 an T-80 weighs 10t. The ERA on the T-90 is the same as used on the M-60, externally added aplique armour panels. One problem, they're useless against kenetic energy penatrators, making the T-90 the lessor protected.

M1 Abrams have been forced out of service for extended periods of time during the first gulf war for example, due to RPG fire.. And anyway claiming the M1 Abrams has excellent armour is just a complement to the British designers who made it..

During Operation Desert shield in 1991 a Challenger 2 claimed a confirmed hit at 5200 meters, and with its computerized firing system it can engage a target the size of a football from 3 miles away, and is capable of engaging 3 seperate targets in 15 seconds, it easily out classes the Abrams, the only drawback is that it costs pretty much double what an Abrams does.
Furthermore in 2003 during the invasion of Iraq, a Challenger 2 was ambushed and recieved 14 hits from RPG's and 1 hit from a MILAN Anti-Tank weapon, which is one of the most effective Anti Tank missles, and it suffered no damage other than to its electronic sight which was repaired and the tank was back in service within 6 hours.
potosi2, The speed of the Abrams is only 5mph faster off road, secondly the challenger makes up for its lack of speed with its heavy armour, no challengers were destroyed in the Iraq War yet in the Gulf war of 1991 14 Abrams were forced out of service, and in the Iraq War over 80 have been forced out of service, the service record alone proofs which is the more capable tank.
CR2 runs on diesel like every other vehicle in the British army. Abrams can't go 45 mph off-road though, its ancient suspension would destroy the tank and damage the crew. CR2 uses advanced hydro-gas suspension and it is the 2nd fastest tank off-road, the LecLerc is the fastest on any ground. It also uses advanced hydro-gas suspension.
challenger development was partly funded by the iranian government before revolution.

Challenger 2 is the most battle-tested tank in existence. Has undergone the most strenuous reliability tests of any tank in the world. Has taken more hits, "in theatre", than any other machine, and come out relatively unscathed. Leopard has never been tested in war, ever.

- it has! During an engagement in 1994 with Serb positions seven Danish Leopard 1s killed arcording to some sources 150 Serb troops + 3 T55. Today the Danes and Canadians use the Leopard 2 in the fight against the Taliban in Afghanistan - the Danes in Helmand with the British.
- Like many other modern MBTs the leopard has yet to prove itself as a great tank killer .... and hopefully it never will

The Leopard 2A6 is the best. Challenger series is slow. Leclerc isnt bad. The M1 is a massive gas guzzler (otherwise its good).
The Merkava has the right idea for Chassis design. But has insufficient armour, mobility and main gun to compete with other modern MBTs.

There are considerably more American tanks stationed in Iraq, so it makes sense that they'd have more losses. At any rate, I'd like to see where you got your information on 80 Abrams' completely destroyed. To my knowledge the vast majority of losses have been mission kills only.

Longest range kill of any tank, fastest off road speed, hunter killer targeting system, hydrogas suspension, HESH rounds. i know id rather be in a Challey with its world beating Dorchester armour. Plus with Iranian meddling with Iraqi politics, we could see a round 3, except the Iraqis are buying 300 or so Abrams.
Apart from that you're spot on. Shame the government bought 400, and we're only going to be using 220 or so after the SDSR. At least they're going ahead with the upgrade programme.

Do you people even know what ERA is? It stands for Exlosive Reactive Armour, it isn't inside the T-90 at all. It was first used on T-72s, Russians tend to use add-on squares of it, some-times on top of ballistic matting, the add-on armour kit for the T-72 an T-80 weighs 10t. The ERA on the T-90 is the same as used on the M-60, externally added aplique armour panels. One problem, they're useless against kenetic energy penatrators, making the T-90 the lessor protected.

Why the hell do you think tanks need guided missiles. Just because T-90 has one doesn't mean it's a necessity for a tank. Abrams would not need one, because first off it's not out there fighting against tanks, and it doesn't fight alone, meaning soldiers with Javelins, Bradleys with TOW, not to mention the multitude of aircraft we have to destroy tanks.
And if it WAS alone,
M1A2 has a missile countermeasure device, blocks wire, radio, infrared, and thermally guided ATGM. And some do have ERA.

Yes ERA can be replaced, have fun replacing it in the middle of a battlefield taking fire. Also T-90s "composite" armour is just layers of rubber and alluminum.......Do you honestly think it will offer more protection than armour made from ceramics,kevlar,tungsten,titanium,steel,silica carbide etc? Do a simple google search on T-90 and you'll find some are made with just steel armour(with ERA) and others built with rubber and alluminium in layers(with ERA). Also how do you replace ERA built into the tank? Thats right you have to do it from the inside.just like with Chobham or Dorchester. Dude, I dont know where you get your facts from, but Chally 2 is streets ahead of anything the russians have, and you are saying that C2 is no better than m1? Not 1 single C2 has ever been destroyed in combat, it has survived multiple hits from dedicated anti tank weapons, it has the most advanced composite armour, a FCS that is second to none, and is infact the fastest tank offroad, with stabilised hydrogas gun/suspension allowing for pinpoint accurate fire even at these speeds.

yes I can say that usa's tanks are better than british. but usa's tanks lack a lot of protective systems. only has fat naked armor, which is penetratable with very first gen rpgs.

The fact is CR2 has never been destroyed by enemy fire, because it has the best armour in the world. Not forgetting it has a more advanced version of the world beating L11 that KO'd an enemy tank @ 5.2km. I'd be hard-pressed to decide between the Challenger and the Abrams. They are both very good tanks with good guns and good armor. The Challenger has the Chieftain's excellent gun, but I have to pick the Abrams because I'm American.

CR2 has a .55 rifled gun. Abrams uses a .44 smoothbore. As you can see from these simple facts CR2 has the more powerful gun.

During Operation Desert shield in 1991 a Challenger 2 claimed a confirmed hit at 5200 meters, and with its computerized firing system it can engage a target the size of a football from 3 miles away, and is capable of engaging 3 seperate targets in 15 seconds, it easily out classes the Abrams, the only drawback is that it costs pretty much double what an Abrams does.

Furthermore in 2003 during the invasion of Iraq, a Challenger 2 was ambushed and recieved 14 hits from RPG's and 1 hit from a MILAN Anti-Tank weapon, which is one of the most effective Anti Tank missles, and it suffered no damage other than to its electronic sight which was repaired and the tank was back in service within 6 hours.

potosi2, The speed of the Abrams is only 5mph faster off road, secondly the challenger makes up for its lack of speed with its heavy armour, no challengers were destroyed in the Iraq War yet in the Gulf war of 1991 14 Abrams were forced out of service, and in the Iraq War over 80 have been forced out of service, the service record alone proofs which is the more capable tank.

CR2 runs on diesel like every other vehicle in the British army. Abrams can't go 45 mph off-road though, its ancient suspension would destroy the tank and damage the crew. CR2 uses advanced hydro-gas suspension and it is the 2nd fastest tank off-road, the LecLerc is the fastest on any ground. It also uses advanced hydro-gas suspension.
