I was thinking Dorothy should have apologized and given the witch her sister's slippers, and shown some compassion about death in her family.
Then the witch might not have been so aggressive towards Dorothy during the rest of the movie. Even if she was, Dorothy should have taken the high ground and set an example. By stealing the slippers, she and Glenda stoop to that level and become the wicked witches themselves in this scene.
...Wicked is a revisionist work inspired by Baum's story and the MGM film. And if anyone did their homework they'd know that a majour plot hole is that Glinda is actually the Good witch of the south in the books, we never get a name for the Good witch of munchkinland. Either way the book, the movie and Wicked are all different entities and I don't think they can be compared. Hating a movie you liked just because some guy wrote a glorified fanfiction about it is just silly.
The Wizard of Oz was written around 1899, by L.Frank Baum who never intended the Wicked Witch of the West to be a "Nice" or "Good" Character ,Wicked was written some 100yrs later and totally distorded Baum's original vision of the Witch
I read the book (Wicked) and was totally disappointed in the change in her character...My expectation was to explain WHY she became so wicked not to turn her into a warm & fuzzy feel good character...I hated Wicked!
@baritonebynight Seriously? When did she steal a car? Also it's her own house that she steps out of and never back into, how could you charge her with breaking and entering under those circumstances? Manslaughter by definition means that no harm was meant by the person who did the killing. In both witches death it was manslaughter, she never had intent to injure or harm. You could make the argument that she's keeping the shoes on as a self-defense measure ...but really Grand Theft Auto?
@PlumboyNC17 She set out with a group of thugs to murder the witch and steal her car (broom). Dorothy's accomplices broke into the Wicked Witch's castle (breaking and entering and damaging a historic door), as she had planned on doing before the Witch's security system (crystal ball) and security guards (flying monkeys) intercepted her plan. This was pre meditated murder. Dorothy planned on killing the witch and stealing her car which the wizard wanted for himself.
@baritonebynight Stealing a broom is not GTA it's petty larcony broom. I would like to point out that Dorothy was kidnapped by the Wicked Witch and her intent was to steal the broom not kill the witch. Therefore this crime petty larcony and manslaughter. Although it could be argued that she was acting in self-defense therefore she would be acquitted from those charges. If you didn't notice though the Winkies were pretty thankful that the Witch was killed, so Dorothy could be a saviour.
@PlumboyNC17 The broom was the witch's car. That's what they use in Oz, brooms and bubbles. Dorothy was trying to break into the witch's house (the Lion, her accomplice, said they'd have to kill her, Dorothy didn't disagree). The Witch intercepted her plan and as the Ruler of the West, had every authority to detain her until the police could arrive. Acting in self defence by reciveing stolen property that was looted from a corpse that clearly belongs to the next of kin? Thats sick I tell you!
After seeing Wicked, this makes me hate Wizard of Oz :(
I love Wizard of Oz because it's a classic film but also hate it because I love Elphaba who is viewed as actually a "wicked witch" and what everyone did to her and before Wicked came out, everyone hated the Wicked Witch and now everyone loves her.
She was a true hero in Wicked and was actually more good than Glinda.
She was the one who tried to save all of Oz and then was booted as an outcast and treated very badly.
@boffinme80 Yeah, and notice, it seems like Glinda's hiding something from Dorothy, like the real reason she wants the slippers. Poor Elphaba! I loved Wicked.
Why would people always refer to her by a longer title though? calling her Elphaba or Elphie is just much more easier and who cares theirs no need to get so defensive about what to call her in the first place true Wicked is just a parallel to The Wizard Of Oz but hey it gave the Wicked Witch of The West a name so might as well go with it.
ELPHIE!!! i remember, glinda is mad at her at this point, so of course she says "this is the wicked witch of the west. shes even more wicked than the other one." lol, not so funny when elphie slaps you later, huh glinda?
i love this movie!!!!!!!!! i wish dorothy were still alive!!! and i wish i were alive when this movie came out! well actually not really cuz i would be very old rite now. haha
Did you know that the castle the inspired the Oz castle is in Holland, Michigan? It's true. Part of the story was even written in the castle in Castle Park. The castle has been nominated in Ellen's Wish You Were Here Contest under the Hollywood connection.
