I had a pretty good feeling if they reformed that Duvall would be the replacement. Duvall was playing the part of Layne on Jerry's solo tours long before. He's got guts to do what he's doing, and he does a good job. Of course I prefer Layne, but new AIC is better than no AIC.
AiC is the best band that ever lived, in my opinion. It sucks Layne passed, and now Mike Starr. BUT they're still going at it and kicking major ass. Black Gives Way to Blue is an amazing album! If you call yourself an AiC fan and refuse to listen to anything since Layne passed, you're just fucking ignorant. The sound hasn't changed, Duvall is really great, and it's still (and always will be) AiC all the way! <3
This isn't Alice in chains and I do think will tries to emulate Layne just watch his moves on stage and his stance with his foot up on the monitors. U aren't Layne and if aic wanted to go on then that's fine but do your own songs the ones that have been sang with Layne should be put to rest don't ruin them

I happen to like AIC with Duvall. Just as I liked them with Staley. He compliments the band very well and does not attempt to replace Staley. He is simply there because Staley is not.

Big props to William Duvall. He is a great singer, and the songs pretty much sound the same with his voice. To all the "haters", you have to remember that NO singer is ever going to fill the shoes of the original. I don't care what band it is. You could have the brilliant Eddie Vedder singing in Layne's place and it still wouldn't be the same. I miss Layne, but at least AIC has moved on and is still rocking. Rather than think of Wm. mimicking Layne, realize if for what it is: an homage. He's an old friend of theirs, which is why he can do it justice and knows the AIC sound. He DOES have his own sound; listen to the album. We all miss Layne, we get it. RIP Layne, and carry on, gentlemen. it's worth checking them out at a show.
I think I could claim on behalf of AIC fans that we ALL miss Layne and AIC would not be where it is had it not been for him. With that said, I feel this album, like the previous ones demonstrates that the rest of the band has unprecedeted talent as well! Jerry Cantrell is one of the bestin the business and theres no one like him but this band(while still good), is only a shell of their former self. Layne was ureplacable!

The people who hate the sound with Duvall nowadays probably would have hated it with Staley too... This is Alice in Chains in 2009-2010 after all. Bands change, and unfortunately they get older too. The good thing about Duvall is that he honors the old songs and Layne's vocals- he's not changing them radically, but he makes them sound REALLY good. Give him a break. He knows how to rock.
Thanks for being truthful to the band. I'm a firm believer that if Layne were still around now, he wouldn't be able to sing his songs as good as Will can, due to the severity of his drug problems, which RUINED the band for those who don't remember correctly...

For all those skeptical old school AIC fans (new album was just okay) check them out in concert and you will change your mind, they still know how to rock and they put on a hell of a show.

He actually does sound a lot like Layne. Not as good, but a lot like him. He has obviously been working on being able to sing like Layne and has a voice with the same range from what I can see. He even has some of the same stage antics as Layne. :/

you know what, duvall is better live than staley was... he's a different vocalist with just as much technical skill who sounds really fucking similar. yeah, they play songs that staley wrote and it will never mean the same, but he fits with the sound of the band well, and hes gonna write and contribute songs that mean something to him in time too. different doesnt mean worse.

Are you kidding me? Jerry was just as important as Layne, if not more. He defined the style of the band. Alice in Chains had a band chemistry that was unbelievable. None of the band members were interchangeable.
Starting a 'new project' usually doesn't pan out well professionally...it means Jerry has to disregard his entire career, save for his solo stuff. Also there are dire implications for changing the name too. You basically have to start COMPLETELY over when you do that, as no one knows who you are..so you'd be missing out on an already built in fanbase. I don't think anyone who's spent 23 hard years building their name would want to do that. Think about what you say competently.

Cantrell plays lead guitar. You can't do lead vocals and lead guitar at the same time. I agree Jerry does have what it takes more than most people would know, but then he would have to leave the guitar alone. What is a popular band supposed to do when a vocalist is gone? Call it quits? Imagine if AC/DC did that after Bon Scott passed on. We would have missed 30 years of good music.
I happen to like AIC with Duvall. Just as I liked them with Staley. He compliments the band very well and does not attempt to replace Staley. He is simply there because Staley is not.
The band sounds very mature and I will be seeing them in Las Vegas on the 16th.

Duvall is just a journeyman singer. There's nothing particularly special about him, and Cantrell's voice seems to drown him out in most songs.

Big props to William Duvall. He is a great singer, and the songs pretty much sound the same with his voice. To all the "haters", you have to remember that NO singer is ever going to fill the shoes of the original. I don't care what band it is. You could have the brilliant Eddie Vedder singing in Layne's place and it still wouldn't be the same. I miss Layne, but at least AIC has moved on and is still rocking. If they never got back together, then the same people would be shouting for a reunion.

Rather than think of Wm. mimicking Layne, realize if for what it is: an homage. He's an old friend of theirs, which is why he can do it justice and knows the AIC sound. He DOES have his own sound; listen to the album. We all miss Layne, we get it. RIP Layne, and carry on, gentlemen. it's worth checking them out at a show.

I think I could claim on behalf of AIC fans that we ALL miss Layne and AIC would not be where it is had it not been for him. With that said, I feel this album, like the previous ones demonstrates that the rest of the band has unprecedeted talent as well! I think it's about time we recognize and appreciate Jerry, Sean, and Mike and give them their long overdue props. Afterall, you HAVE to really admire Alice in Chain's ability to record a successful album without Layne. Live on AIC!

The people who hate the sound with Duvall nowadays probably would have hated it with Staley too... This is Alice in Chains in 2009-2010 after all. Bands change, and unfortunately they get older too. The good thing about Duvall is that he honors the old songs and Layne's vocals- he's not changing them radically, but he makes them sound REALLY good. Give him a break. He knows how to rock.

@cskarulis Yea i agree. I was actually skeptical being that I was such a huge AIC and Layne Staley fan especially. But I just saw them in concert last night, and Duvall really tore it up. He actually stays true to Laynes vocals, doesnt change it up too much, and gives off good energy.
For all those skeptical old school AIC fans (new album was just okay) check them out in concert and you will change your mind, they still know how to rock and they put on a hell of a show.

Then don't listen to the band. I hate to break it to ya, but the more and more I listen to Black Gives Way to Blue, the more I realize that Layne was NOT Alice In Chains like all the Layne fans think.
When I first saw them playing again w/ VR in 2007, I was BLOWN AWAY by how perfect the vocal harmonies were when they opened with Again. And the quality stayed. And it obviously is here to stay, because at Boston's Orpheum Theater this past Sunday..I witnessed the greatest performance of my life.

Starting a 'new project' usually doesn't pan out well professionally...it means Jerry has to disregard his entire career, save for his solo stuff. Also there are dire implications for changing the name too. You basically have to start COMPLETELY over when you do that, as no one knows who you are..so you'd be missing out on an already built in fanbase. I don't think anyone who's spent 23 hard years building their name would want to do that. Think about what you say competently.

respecting Layne means supporting the name..no matter who's singing. Respecting Layne doesn't mean dissing Will. Of course we ALL like Layne better, he's the original. But he's also dead (kind of a BIG setback there, buddy!), so what are ya gonna do? Carry on and support them no matter fuckin what. If they decided to record an album of farts and stuck a Bogner cabinet baffle over their asses, I'd still buy it..as long as its Jerry and the boys doin' the pootin'.
