USN & USMC The Marines saluted because they are under arms and are therefore covered indoors, the Naval Officer snapped to a position of attention just as she should have because she is not armed.
Such an emotional scene. Ever since I first saw it, (way back when Season 2 first aired) I'm moved by the performances. Every time. Charles Durning especially is fantastic - a well deserved Emmy nomination that year.
@msymsed He did get an emmy for his role in this episode. He also did serve, in the US Army, WW2, not the Corps however, and was discharged as a private first class
Nope. Ray Liotta won the 2005 Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series for his guest appearance on ER the same year Durning was nominated for this episode.
The official Emmy awards website archives says he hasn't. Durning's a Golden Globe winner and multiple Emmy and Oscar nominee. He's never won an Oscar. He's never won an Emmy. He has received numerous Lifetime Achievement Awards from other accrediting bodies.
This episode always reminds me of my greandfather that fought in WWII. He always had trouble talking about his experiences over there and it was not until the last years of his life he would talk about it. This is my favorite episode of all. Semper fi! and thanks to all veterans on thbis day and every day!
Watch Charles Durning in the 1980 Kirk Douglas flick "The Final Countdown", and watch him here in this 2004 episode. He has hardly aged in a quarter of a century.
I"ve always loved Charles Durning's work. I don't care for "NCIS," but my wife is a big fan of the show, and she "snuck this one" in on me one day. I was crying by the end of it. Why Durning didn't win an Emmy for this (he was nominated), I'll never know.
A Medal of Honor recipient is saluted by every rank; up to and including the President. Except this President doesn't know the differance between the MoH or the Medal of Freedom.
'Charles Durning Bio' tells his story including ww2.
Sgt US Army Ranger. Fought D-Day, Omaha Beach..aka...blood beach.
Wounded by German S-mine (the original Bouncing Betty mine). Recovered....returned to combat, fighting in the Battle of the Bulge....wounded 2 more times..
Word. His presence lent this episode palpable gravitas. Durning himself said that this was the hardest acting part he ever took and he almost never signed up for it because it was just too painful for him on a personal level.
This episode was so powerful, so intense in all its subtleties...the emotion invoked just seeing a Medal of Honor around a hero's neck is intense...God bless all who serve and have served!
It's really interesting to see the reaction of the soldiers when saw the medal of honour... Is this only in the film? And what about the exhumation of the body and the ceremony???
It's something any soldier will do when they see a Medal of Honor. Technically all civilians should too, but they don't know to... The Medal of Honor is the highest reward our Country offers, you don't think even the lowest of military man will respect what amazing feats were accomplished to earn that?
