Germany was already largely defeated before D-Day, by its massive war with Bolshevik Russia (which went so horribly wrong due to Hitler's severe lack of military judgement and arogance)
The western allies efforts merely ensured that the USSR didn't gain complete control of europe after the war - which was a GOOD thing, as Scandinavia followed by Britain would be next on the USSR's kill-list.
