Just hold the spring so it doesn't touch the ground. i.e high up then place a paper cup near the top and hit the spring on a coil about four above that.
the slinky thing, my class found about it on accident when our teacher was teaching us about waves. we accidentally hit the metal leg of the desk and the blaster sound it made was so loud that you didnt need to amplify it with a microphone. by making waves with the slinky and repeatedly hitting the desk leg, it sounded just like a blaster battle, with no echo
is there any way i can download a sample of the laser blaster as a wav. file without having to buy a microphone, a slinky and sample it myself? plz help! great vid!:D
Despite the chap with the ridiculous name, this is most definitely an awesome video. I've been trying to find out about this effect for ages, and I'm really pleased that you even included the physics in the second part.
as a kid playing with a metal slinky, i accidentally discovered this sound phenomenon -- i'd let one end of the slinky sit on the floor, and hold the other end up to my ear to hear the "lasers!" I wondered if that was how they made the sound for the movies, because it sounded So much like it.
i hadn't thought about that in years. how cool to see that i was on to something! :D
Ha ha ha, great stuff. As a child i had a "toy" that was basically a spring inside a cadboard tube with stars painted on the side. Made this exact sound. I use to hold it like a bazooka and "shoot" friends with it. Fun times.
