How big did they say the "killer whale" was? Was it ten tons or 20K pounds. Did the whale "bust her up". Unhappily parents or teachers sometimes destroy their own children. It is mostly a matter of "what is acceptable and appropriate" and will not kill the smaller participant. Maybe "big whale" doesn't have a good sense of what the trainer could deal with, since he thinks like a whale and is limited to "personal whale experience". Did he break her neck? if not then he was being "gentle".

Its human error. Nothing more and nothing less. The trainer chose a dangerous profession and CHOSE to do this dangerous stunt. Can't blame the whale. Now I'm not saying that innocent people deserve to die but when you choose such a profession, you have to be aware of the risks you take every morning you step out the door. Also, Zoos and places like Sea World are what got me into my line of work which is research and conservation. Zoos have their place. It may be sad to see animals in captivity and there are some zoos I just wont go to (some zoos do wonderful work though, like the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha, NE which does great research). However, the animals have a chance to be ambassadors for their species and have a chance to create awareness.
As "sad" as it is, it's a risk you take in that line of work. I work in Africa 4 weeks out of the year, it's sad if someone dies or gets hurt but you always have to keep in the back of your head that it's a risk they willingly take. Every time I go out into the reserve I have a chance of getting mauled and/or killed but I know that and I do it anyways because I believe in the work that I do.

It's awful vain to think like that. There is very hard scientific evidence that suggests that we evolved. Most educated people would all agree with that, with a god or without one. All creatures evolved with instincts and needs. Whales evolved with the instinct to hunt much like humans have the instinct to suck upon birth (Breastfeeding). The whale was probably happy, but still had that instinct.

Tell me are you the sort of person who needs jokes to be retold and explained by a sympathetic friend? You clearly did not understand where the commentators were coming from in this clip. At no point were they ripping on the trainer; were you expecting them to present the story with insincere tears? They were making a serious point about predatory animals being kept in a contrived setting in a light-hearted fashion which is inkeeping with the general tone of the show.

Secondly whilst I cannot profess to being an impassioned activist for animal welfare, there is a legitimate point of discussion they were engaging with regards to the morality of keeping animals captive for entertainment and commercial purposes.

In this case it is pretty clear they feeling a little awkward in addressing a story which involved someone dying. It's much more likely that they were giggling to shroud their discomfiture. How big did they say the "killer whale" was? Was it ten tons or 20K pounds. Did the whale "bust her up". Unhappily parents or teachers sometimes destroy their own children. It is mostly a matter of "what is acceptable and appropriate" and will not kill the smaller participant. Maybe "big whale" doesn't have a good sense of what the trainer could deal with, since he thinks like a whale and is limited to "personal whale experience". Did he break her neck? if not then he was being "gentle".

Also, Zoos and places like Sea World are what got me into my line of work which is research and conservation. Zoos have their place. It may be sad to see animals in captivity and there are some zoos I just wont go to (some zoos do wonderful work though, like the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha, NE which does great research). However, the animals have a chance to be ambassadors for their species and have a chance to create awareness.

As "sad" as it is, it's a risk you take in that line of work. I work in Africa 4 weeks out of the year, it's sad if someone dies or gets hurt but you always have to keep in the back of your head that it's a risk they willingly take. Every time I go out into the reserve I have a chance of getting mauled and/or killed but I know that and I do it anyways because I believe in the work that I do.
