This makes me sad. The message seems to be "Are you an intelligent, driven young woman who wants to become highly educated in a STEM field? well, that isn't enough. you better be pretty too or no one will care." This sort of thing just undermines women ever being respected for the truly valid contributions they make.
@anthyrose1 Or...it says to the 3-4 million little cheerleaders in the U.S. that looks or stereotypes shouldn't define them. They're going to need a career (cheerleading will not pay the bills): why not make it a science or engineering career?
Busting stereotypes my a.. Where is the cheerleading ladies? It occupies like 5% of the clip.. looks like you like to brag about science cheerleading and how cool it is instead of actually doing it.
@svatapravda So, I'm pretty sure that's not the point. I think they're saying, "Yes, we're awesome cheerleaders... but guess what? We have these awesome careers too! Just cause you're hot and a cheerleader doesn't mean you're stupid."
*I like how they never said the words "pretty AND smart", but implied it. The end was awkward, though I love the point; bringing real dreams for young women back in style. Go Science!
*chuckle* ok I kid. Seriously though this is really awesome! This is the sort of thing that needs to be done more often to promote the idea that intelligence does not have to be isolated from things like the ability to relate socially, to having things like a sense of humor, and of course the almighty holy grail of advertising and fame; sex appeal.
All it takes is a willingness to do the necessary work.
LOL :D So much hatred in previous comments! I wonder why?! If any of people commenting ARE beautiful, successful, scientists, plus having a great and fun hobby I am sure you now WHY from your everyday life! Thumbs up for SCIENCE,tumbs down for ENVY!
I wish the best thinking to the ScienceCheerleaders, in their endeavors. My advice:Do not disregard the power of philosophy, for it too is a science, or rather the sciences are of philosphy. What has philosophy got to do with science? Philosophy was the original observatonal (but general) science and philosphy is what identifies things like the validity of the perceptual organs; thelaws of identity & causality; the rules of definition & inference. For more look into Rands' philosophy Objectivism.
I'm a former high school (male) cheerleader. Living in an area where male cheerleaders are a rarity, I like to think that I helped bust some stereotypes myself. I'm also a huge nerd and went on to earn degrees in computer science and biochemistry. So keep setting a great example, and let me know if you're ever in the Seattle area. I'll happily bring my kids to see how awesome science can be!
So, what, would you all be happier if these women wore hornrimmed glasses and had the taste of a stereotypical 80s nerd? Beautiful women can be smart, too.
I don't know how effective this will be, but one thing is for sure - we need more women in science! They're brilliant, talented, have a lot to contirbute and they any scientific environment look a whole lot better!
I like the whole "have your cake and eat it too" idea, and I'm glad that all of you sciencecheerleaders were motivated and driven enough to do cheerleading and pursue degrees in advanced field. My only criticism is: Let's be realistic! You're the less-than-100 out of a country of at least 150 million females. You're giving girls false hope. Many times, if you're pursuing advanced degrees you can't be both sexually appealing enough to be objectified and still maintain a good GPA.
Just think, you used to assume that your degree made you prestigious; and further, you measured this self-ascribed prestige with little stars!
In only 2 minutes and 51 seconds, these dedicated and talented ladies have helped you rise up! No more stars and check-marks and turtle stickers for you! You can now pull that degree off of the fridge and use it's power for good instead of shameless self promotion!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
So the lesson is to take advantage of sexually objectification while young to pay for a career path into science when your looks are waning? At least there is some push for science I guess, even if it is motivated by a push-up bra.
sorry to seem like i'm putting it down. i'm all for promoting science, it's probably because cheerleading isn't so popular in england so it seemed a little... overdone? :)
@LastTrueSon Think about what the world would be like if people like Neil deGrasse Tyson, Brian Cox, Stephen Hawking, Carl Sagan, etc were revered as much as sports stars. Our world would be a much better place.
Science FTW! GO SCIENCE!!!

Personally, I think this is crap.
I certainly don't have any problems with either science or smart, good looking women, but I have zero interest in, or respect for, cheerleading.
Science: :)
Smart&sexy women: :)
Cheerleading: Ah fuck, that ruined the whole thing...
