  • It would be great if we could have a visual modern browser on it,but i'm just dreaming!

  • @truebassB Thats true but there is a contiki web browser for the c64. Its supposed to be graphical with a mouse.

  • did you work in commodore company?

  • @grzegorz2285

No. But I had one of these systems when I was ten years old.. I knew many people who programmed them.

  • Dude I just geeked in my pants, awsome. :)

  • @darthkrull69

    Glad you liked it.

  • Awesome!!! You're a genius!!

  • @smoketownog

    Thanks I appreciate the compliment.

  • So how well can that thing torrent? :p

  • Shal we play a game?

  • @TAND0M sure why not? :)

  • @summer20105707 How about a nice game of chess?

  • @summer20105707 How about a nice game of chess?

  • @summer20105707 i think you didn't get the Wargames reference. That was what the computer answered when the kid had wardialed every number in search of a server with some new games on it.

  • @moijk

Oh yeah thats right. Lets play a game. Thermal nuclear war. :)

  • 1 voter couldn't afford a vic 20.

  • why is my VIC-20 asking "SHALL WE PLAY A GAME?"

  • @shesnailie

I dont know. Try asking it what game it wants to play? LOL ROFL

  • @summer20105707

Wants to play "Global Thermonuclear War"

  • @shesnailie

Go for it. 2012's supposed to be an interesting year. LOL ROFL

  • I bet the porn looks blocky

  • Nostalgic but remember this is just a terminal session so it's just spitting out pre-formatted data by the server. Sort of like my Android phone is able to run a terminal session to my windows box. Neither of these cases (TCP internet or Window) truly natively running on the host machine.

  • @oldtwins

True enough. But I'm thinking of getting an ethernet device for this called the comet. And I hope to get TRUE internet that way. But you can still get your email with an account of this type. And my other reason for doing this was to show people the Vic 20 using a modem. I had a Vic as a child and just like many people I NEVER had a modem. So this was new and exciting for me. And I enjoyed sharing it with people.

  • yeah but you update your facebook? lol

  • @Doctorfreek

Oh yes we all have thousands of facebook friends which translates to about 100 in REAL life. LOL Facebook's not bad but its a touch over rated. But you could easily get by twittering or chatting on this thing.

  • After the terminators pulse all the modern computers and string bill gates up by his entrails, these computers will be used by the RESISTANCE!

  • @NonSapor

And I'd be happy to donate mine to the worthy cause as long as I stay on as a trainer. We can't have rookies mishandling rare computers now can we?

  • I had the internet on my amiga 500 back in 1990, it was bbs sites etc, but i could download a picture in about 2 hours lol

  • @Robertdub2006

I had the same Amiga with a 2400 baud modem. Later I got an A1200 with TCP IP and a 56k modem. Ahh the good ole days.

  • I have a commodore 64 - Any points on where to get a terminal emulator, and hardware to connect it over TCP/IP rather than over a acoustic modem?

  • @SeanOBriain

Look for a program called Breadbox 64 on line. And there is a Ethernet modem for the 64 called the comet.

  • @summer20105707 Cheers for that - googled breadbox and the page has lots of info!

  • @SeanOBriain

Thanks. Glad I could help. Its nice to see people still enjoy these old computers. Now check out the Ethernet modem for the c64. That should be useful to you

  • @SeanOBriain

Let me know how it works when you get it eh? I might buy one.

  • @summer20105707 I came across a 64NIC+ which is even cheaper. Have a google of it and let me know what you think.. I found it on go4retro.com

  • @SeanOBriain

I checked it out. It looks good to me. As far as Jim Brains products are concerned I can tell you this. A few years ago I bought an XM 1541 adapter off him for connecting my 1541 drive to my IBM PC and I found that it works great. Jim pays great attention to detail so I expect this product will be the same. This is a cartridge port ethernet adapter which should be very fast for you. At $50 its a deal. My Vic 20 however will need the comet.

  • @summer20105707 I'll let you know how I get on with it - i've a few bills to sort out first, so I'll hopefully get it by the end of the month. I'll be happy if I can just connect to my FreeBSD box from my Commodore. Eventually, I'd like to setup a part-time BBS on the C64 - Just proof of concept really..

  • @SeanOBriain

Did you get your ethernet 64NIC+ yet? How good is it?

  • Nice! They should let you chose the language of that site... wasting valuable bandwidth on having a 2nd language there ;D

  • @CHABBO

    Thats a good point.

  • @summer20105707

Well, back in those days people would brag about CPS speeds ;)

"Short for Characters Per Second, CPS is a data transfer rate generally estimated from the bit rate and the character length. For example, at 2400 bps, 8-bit characters with start/stop bits (for a total of ten bits per character) will be transmitted at a rate of approximately 240 characters per second (cps). This can also refer to how fast a printer may be able to print. "

  • Ah yes, the good old days of computing. Power on, boot up, jack in.

  • thank you. cool computer.

  • How bizarre!

  • @marcusmalone

The internet has been around for decades but only certain people knew about it. However I agree that it is a little strange seeing a computer this old accessing it.

  • YES !! But can it download porn ? lol

  • @wingnut4427

Yes but with VERY big pixels.

  • @summer20105707 mmmm ... big pixel porn. lol

  • Aah! so it's just a terminal emulator over a modem connection. Sorry. Disregard my last comment. But anyways this is way cool, reminds me of those old BBS systems I used to visit with a DOS terminal emulator in the 90's ...

  • How in the hell do you fit a TCP/IP stack in VIC-20's small memory range?

  • @ksym

There are some people who are working on making an ethernet cartridge for it. Syd Bolton from the computer museum in Brantford ontario wrought a twitter client for it as well. I kept it simple with a terminal emulator.

  • @ksym

The ethernet cartridge will probably have extra ram built in.

  • Just think about it. Some preteen is in the next apartment/house, browsing the web on the iPod Touch he got for his birthday.

  • @UseAbuseReuse

Yes technology certainly has come a long way.

  • fascinating.. thanks for sharing!

  • @luishomeroremohsiul

No problem. Glad you enjoyed it.

  • It does porn right?

  • @Uberdude25

Oh yeah with REALLY big pixels. LOL

  • Commodore rocks. Just If I've only used it at its full potential. Connecting to a network with this home computer ? ... something to to talk about next day at school. People don't understand the magic aruond this old HW, you can just compare FLOPS. I have 4 C64, 3 1541 drives and 4 1571 drives ... just because I lost this computer era so much. Also repaired my chilhood's C64 ... working rigth now.

  • @38911bytefree

Yeah I know the feelling. I grew up witrh the Vic 20. Most Vic 20 users never got to see it use a modem. Thats partially why I did this. Satisfying my own curiosity. And I'd have to say it was highly worth it. Congratulations on repairing your C64. What was wrong with it?

  • @summer20105707

The sympthom was the famous black screen, very ocasionally turned into garbage caracters. I've used another C64 to test all the relevant chips (ROMS, VIC II, PLA, 6581, CIA'S), finally, trial and error with the soldered glue logic chips, and it was there. Some sort of latch as I remember. I repaired 4 C64 this year, the failures where quite cheap, none of the big chips were damaged.

  • @38911bytefree

Last year I repaired three Vic 20's with similar issues. Screens filled with garbage. All they needed was a VIC chip replacement.

  • TERMINAL READY.

  • @BaldingEagle51 DIR /P

  • Sorry, stupid question: what can you actually do with this connection? I doubt you can actually get Web functionality with it- dare say you'd be stuck with Telnet?

  • @thelyniezian

It actually allows you to read news off Goolge. I've never tried emailing yet but I think it could be done.

  • @thelyniezian Ally Sheedy (the 1980s version) might show up by the time The Hobbit loads up on my Spectrum...300 baud! That's screaming man. Wheres' my rucksack full of phone? I need to download stuff slowly and expensively. 30 years on....data tariff grief...who'd have thought?

  • What can you actualy do on this network, and what's it meant for?

  • @thelyniezian

The network is a freenet service. The actual hardware I'm using was originaly made for dial up bulletin board services. I put this all together just to show people how it actually works.

  • Now go to /b/

  • I had a Commodore 64 with a 1200 baud modem and i used Paper Clip 3 with a terminal in a word processing program. I use to use my 2 hours of freenet time connecting to NCF but the Internet did not work. But I was able to use chat rooms sig groups and send email using it.

  • @ottawaoctane

Ahh man wicked. That was so cool.

  • Purple looked more readable.

  • @uriituw

Well thats all just a matter of perspective. My main point was to show how it all worked. Just to give people an idea of what the vic 20 is like when using a modem.

  • Cripes, that makes my old PC in 1991look good by comparison connecting with Kermit and Lynx.

And that PC was made mostly from rescued and recovered parts (a Tandy 1000SX 8088 @ 12MHz, Seagate 30MB drive, and a 1200/9600 modem) or cannibalized from other machines.

    Ah, memories.

    .

  • @zxcv1234vcxz

Well it should look better. After all your old PC was from 1991 and this PC was from 1981. A full ten years apart. :-)

  • @summer20105707 - No, my parts were from 1985-1988, all used. I was a broke college student.

In 1991, the 80386 and Windoze 3.1 were high end and cost $2000 for a full machine. I put mine together from scrap for under $200. Windoze? Fat chance, I was stuck with PC-Type and PC-Calc as my software.

  • @zxcv1234vcxz

You got me on that one. I didn't have to assemble the Vic. They came ready to go right out of the box. But still your average equipment was at least 5 years newer than mine. And most importantly it got the job done for you.

  • Now, if you could only get a browser to work on it.

  • @VideoWolf69 - Obviously you haven't kept up with nostalgia and modding fans.

Go read up on the Contiki operating system for 8-bit computers. It works on the Vic20, Commodore 64, Atari 8-bit computers, Apple II and many other older machines. It contains a GUI, a web browser and many other functions. Version 2.5 came out last month.

Youtube doesn't allow linking, so you'll have to search for this phrase:

    contiki-os

    .

  • @zxcv1234vcxz

I see what you mean but i will need the 32k expansion cartridge as the contiki os requires 24k.

  • How much bitcoin will this generate in a year

  • @wizard7132

In theory it could generate alot of bling. If you could get the latest stock quotes or news from various sources it could be used to read and send email. In fact thats what it was used for back in the day. It uses text files like any computer can today. Obviously it cant compete with a modern computer. But business transactions were done on these.

  • @wizard7132 could you explain "bitcoin" for me? thanks

  • if your using the internet today you need to thank the 300baud modems of yester-year for creating the concept remote digital communications that led to the internet, For without people spending silly money on quite limited computers, we would not have the technology we have today.

  • @beingatliberty

So true my friend. So true.

  • The vic was my first computer...Thanks for the vid!

  • @metalmoto

    You're welcome.

  • My first computer :)

  • Does Vic have a RAM expansion fitted?

  • @ntrtube

No. No expansion is needed for this program. Just a ordinary off the shelf vic.

  • ....but can it run Crysis?

  • @dedpxl

    Who cares... Crysis s__s. LOL

  • Brings back memories - remember using a manual 300bd modem in the past. People are really spoilt now and take so much for granted :) Thanks for posting.

  • @brunster64 That is true. But I'll tell you that using the modem on a Vic 20 is a very interesting experience. Most people "including myself" used these mainly as games machines. So using a modem with it was a real treat. Its not all that difficult as long as you remember to switch the modem to outgoing calls.

  • When handling the telephone headset I expected to hear a computer voice ask, "Would You Like To Play A Game?"

  • @kaptaintrips

That would have been amusing. lol

  • @kaptaintrips Hahaha... Great movie!

  • is the terminal program a machine language program or a basic program ??

  • @xadam2dudex

    machine language

  • thank you so much for this post man

  • Very cool. I remember that I used my C64 to log on the Internet (gopher/irc/...) in early 90's with another kind of 300bps modem. I feel old.. ;-)

  • That was great! TY.

  • @robin56

    You're welcome.

  • OMG IM DOWNLOADING A MOVIE ON A 300 BAUD MODEM!!

  • @wizard7132

Actually if you're using the Rogers network and any Microsoft operating system it's just about the same. "Joking" LOL ROFL

  • Not a direct connection though... its a shell account. You could do the same with a local machine running a unix variant. (linksys router) and a serial connection to the that machine. This would eliminate the modem part and no dial up to do.

  • @Astinsan

Fair enough.. But an ethernet card is in the works for the Vic and some people "Syd Bolton" have already used the vic on Twitter. It still counts as a connection to the internet. And you can probably still send emails with this. It wasn't easy to do this because I had to have all the right equipment and getting a working copy of the Vics terminal program as well as local freenets to operate off of. It was a fun experience to do this though. I'll tell you more.

  • @Astinsan

I used freenets back in the early days of the internet when I had very little money to play with. And my earliest computer was a Vic 20. I always knew the Vic had modem's but my family never had the money to afford a modem. Well a few years ago a friend of mine gave me 2 Vic 20's and a 1541 drive and last year I decided to try to run them again. And after I got them running I wondered if there was some way to get them online using an old modem. There's more coming.

  • Respond to this video...

Then I remembered my experience with freenets and bulletin boards back in the 90's. And then I began my mission to get my Vic a modem and learn how to use it. I ended up buying the modem I used in this video on Ebay because it came with the terminal program on tape. And the cool thing about this modem is that the user has to actually dial the freenet phone number manually and then use the switch on the modem so the Vic takes over. It was new and fun for the Vic

  • Should af shown un you porn. Could have seen some huge pixels doing things to each other.

  • Makes me want to go get an acoustic coupler, an old rotary dial phone with a handset that will fit it and a female to female serial cable then go wardialing XD

  • Hell guy I thought your commentary was spot on, brilliant job. I had a Vic-20 as a child and this brought back warm memories, thank you!

  • jajajajaj q asco si no hjay internet ni fotos hijos de puta

  • @eadomino2

Sí mi amigo. Estoy de acuerdo contigo. Imágenes en internet son para un grupo de coños flojos.

  • I didn't know seth rogen was into computers...

  • @TheThomjGregory

Well Seth Rogen's into alot of things. LOL

  • with a bit of imagination it'd be like making a call to the future, the present time, that'd been so cool and then when u went back to school the following day u could tell ur classmates u called the future, and then they'd all wanna know stuff about the future :D

  • Very cool. It reminds me of all those late 70s early 80s sci-fi movies depicting what the future of computers held for us. Thanks for the neat demo. :)

  • That is brilliant.

  • Is there any way I can get some terminal software off the net and convert it to a tape image to do this, I've got a modem, it's for the c64 but I imagine it's generic and works with the vic (plugs into it anyway)

  • @OBSysteme

good enough. This has all the makings of a good deal and friendship.

  • @OBSysteme

Okay Im ready to do this swap with you. I found my tape and cassette deck and Im ready to go. But we'll need to exchange mailing addresses.

  • @OBSysteme

Deal... We'll need to exchange eachothers mailing addresses. And then I'll dig out my tape deck.

  • @OBSysteme

The 1670 modem will work on the Vic 20 with Victerm I. I know this because I've used it. When searching for the program its "Victerm I". They used a Roman Numeral instead of 1.

  • @summer20105707 Any idea if I can get a copy of this on the internet? could anybody copy it to a wave file and send it me? desperatly trying to get the vic on the net :o)

  • @OBSysteme

There was also a twitter client made for the vic 20. And the C64 has one called breadbox 64. I hope I've satisfied your questions. :-)

  • @OBSysteme

First I'd need to know the set up your Commodore has. Do you have a modem? Are you using a tape deck or disk drive? Send me a good blank tape and I'll make a backup copy for you. If you've got a disk drive and an xm 1541 you can download the software from your PC from a site called funet fi. The C64 has tonnes of terminal emulators. I suggest getting a 1541 cable or adapter. Thanks to that I downloaded tonnes of Vic 20 programes and demos.

  • @OBSysteme

You can log in from anywhere. Since it is a dialup connection you may pay a little long distance if your calling from far away. This modem that Im using is a Commodore 300 baud modem. It came with its own software called "victerm I" Its a terminal emulator program. It allows you to interact with the freenet. I havent tested it with email yet though. I made another video about the modem and software itself. there are several ways to get copies of the software. I'll tell you more.

  • WOW commodore 64 internet!! lol im gonna test this ti have experience

  • correction.. Will enable sound through your TV monitor or stereo.

  • an unrelated question. but does the vic 20 have a internal speaker?

  • @kyotoair

No it doesn't. But if your thinking of getting one don't worry your monitor or TV RF modulator wible sound through your TV, monitor or even a stereo with RCA inputs.

  • @summer20105707 thanks for the reply. i'm in the prosess getting a VIC-20 myself. Can't wait!!

  • Seth Rogan Narrates

  • @photoddgrapher

thanks.. I still say I have a decent yoda voice.

  • download all the pr0n

  • @godieinafirenow

This comment shows you're limited intelligence troll. prOn. Bloomin retarded troll. :-)

  • @summer20105707 I am limited intelligence? I am sorry did you mean "your limited intelligence" :') The word pr0n was intentionally miss spelled for comical value . you make me laugh so I guess your not all bad :')

  • @godieinafirenow

I may have been a little rude so I appologize. Peace.

  • @godieinafirenow

    DNFTT

Do not feed the trolls. LOL

  • awesome video!!!

  • @patduch636

Well pat for another future video I'll show you how to download real vic 20 games off the net using 1541 adapter, disk drive and the Star Commander software for the PC. It sounds complicated but its really simple if you have all the pieces. Youll love it. You can get alot of vic 20 games free this way and even some of the awesome demos like robot warrior.

  • Who would have thought all those years ago when the Vic 20 was launched it would be connected to a world wide network.. Truly Amazing!!!

  • @Retr0Rewind

Yes sir. The Vic has certainly surpassed all expectations for it.

  • can you get on Facebook with the VIC 20?,It's a far cry from the Intel Core 2 Duo processor,Windows 95,98,2000,Millenium,XP,Vista and 7.

  • Can you get on Facebook with the VIC 20?,it's a far cry from the Intel Core 2 Duo processor and Windows 95,98,2000,Millenium,XP,Vista,7 and Linx.

  • @53ra79ps5

I have no idea about facebook. But I know for certain that its been done with twitter. The Vic can get on twitter so I assume Facebook is a possibility.

  • @53ra79ps5

Well yes you could pay 500 dollars to buy something that'll only be used for texting and email, like facebook. Or you could save about 470 dollars program the Vic and potentially do it for a fraction of the cost. Or would that be too much thinking for you? As I said they've already done this with twitter as an example.

On the other hand the Vic can't play modern PC games. But if I'm only interested in sending messages why the hell would I pay more? 30 or 500 you do the math.

  • Wow, that's bloody amazing, I've love to get my good old vic to do that, never thought it could :o)

  • @RetroGamerVX Well the main thing you need in order to do this is a terminal program and modem. I lucked out. I found a complete Commodore automodem on Ebay. The previous owner took really good care of it. It had the modem, the terminal program on tape and all the original manuals. The same terminal program can be downloaded online at funetfi. The program name is Victerm I. For a download you will need an XA 1541 adapter and a 1541 disk drive. I'll do a video on this subject for reference.

  • Excellent stuff. a twitter client was made for the C64 i wonder if one is possible for the VIC :)

  • @IntrinsicPalomides

Yes... Its been done already. The vic 20 has sent tweets. Check out Vic 20 sends tweets from Syd Bolton. Its incredible. You'll love it. :-)

  • Thanks to bringing me back when I was 10! Now I am 38 and I can't believe how fast the technology has evolved!

  • @domdom111111

Thats true my friend. Technology sure has changed but I still love my Commodores. They can be lots of fun.

  • Sorry i am a tech-retard, so forgive me if this is a silly question, but can you go to the google homepage with that?

  • @mty1

Yes by using the lynx text web browser

  • Wow! Can a C=64 do that too?

  • @fixman88

Yes actually it can. Ive done it with a C64 and 128 as well. They can handle it very well.

  • Great retroputing video! Thanks for making and uploading it. :)

  • @ObiWanBillKenobi

Your welcome. I just thought this is something many people would love to see.

  • Sure thing dude. I'll get the number to asap. :-)

  • could you pm me the number? I'm wanting to try this my self, thanks
