Hironori Ohtsuka, founded Wado-Ryu in 1938. It grew from his study of jiu jitsu, aikido, and Okinawan karate. On the other hand, Odo Sensei learned the style of Shorin Ryu he passed on with Okinawan karate, judo, and kobudo as his foundations. Those differences in origin garner differences in understanding of what are essentially the same kata. Those differences evolve into the kata appearing more and more different over time.
Certainly, due to body morphology and personal reflection, I see different importances in kata than my sensei. I expect my students to do the same. I hope that my students see good technique and flaws in what I do. That enables development of a critical eye and better understanding.
Thanks for the comment, hopefully it sparked some discussion or consideration regarding kata for anyone who reads this!
That was one of the purposes for me to post this in the first place.
I enjoyed your videos, there are a lot of "experts" out there that are quick to show judgement and think their way is the only way. There are many ways up a mountain. I have heard of your sensei odo, I believe that he has some roots in isshinryu if I am not mistaken.
