@vb4You That explains regenerating health but not things like 2 weapon limits and other obsessions with realism. And even if you didn't know where to place health packs you could just place checkpoints that bring your health back to normal like painkiller did. Sure it's easier to screw up but it's not as far as being rocket science. And no regenerating health makes games tense and exciting. What was wrong with just choosing a lower difficulty if a game is too hard?

There are two weapons because switching between more than 2 weapons with a controller is pure bullshit.

The games look realistic because on the old days we had shitty graphics and we couldn't afford doing it. Now realistic shooters give games a "this is not for kids" look, so new people(who thought games were for kids) join the gaming community. And because of their success everyone copycats each other.

Popular game developers have the trust of the community that their games will be good so they can just get lazy and make the same game with a graphic upgrade and still make a prophet. Indie developers on the other hand need to make a game flawless and put their heart and soul into making every cent worth the effort. Also after serious Sam 2 croteam needs to win people back.

Consoles are not the reason modern shooters suck. The problem comes from somewhere else. Halo codified it - But why did everyone follow?

@vb4You Actually, I think I know the answer: You have to pay more for decent level designers. A cover shooter with regenerating health is harder to fuck up in terms of level design. The result should be obvious.

In the classical system, you'd make the game trivial/impossible by miss-placing a health pack or having too many/few projectiles at once directed at the player (due to evasion as gameplay mechanic).

I'm not sure why everyone is battling over Gears and this game. I have played gears, Serious Sam, Killzone, COD black ops, Halo, and Uncharted. I honestly find all of them fun and enjoyable. Serious Sam is one of my first FPS game that I ever played and I still find it fun to play. Gears is also fun to play and so are the others so can't we just forget about who getting awards and flames wars and focuse on the MAIN reasons why we play them? FOR FUN maybe?
