  • I've just bought a copy of the book of this. I'll read that first before I watch this. I've read "Atlas Shrugged" and thought it was OK.

  • At least he didnt have to draw everything with fucking CAD.

  • Roark is bad ass

  • I tried to watch this year ago before I'd read the book. Needless to say, I didn't get ten minutes in before shutting it off and lost 4 years before reluctantly reading the book. Boy, this film is downright awful!

  • The screenplay is even more unimaginative than the pastiche buildings it seeks to criticise. Soggier than a rain forest and twice as wooden - bring a pillow to fall asleep on when they eventually get to court, if you get that far. Audiences in cinemas must have left in their droves, or followed Raymond Massey's example (I know I was tempted several times).

  • this is not Ayn's vision. boo on holly wood

  • Holy crap I can't believe they allowed this on film. The housing project, wow. Just imagine what the fools in this modern day would say about this.

  • @mistermassive1 I completely agree- humanity is only pulled up from the top, not pushed up from the bottom.

  • @CapadocioJT He spoke very well at the end, just as he did in Mr. Deeds Goes To Town/1936. Thank you very much for the upload. Your continious good work will always be appreciated.

  • A window into a strange world where everyone says what they really mean, and History is a prison.

  • @suredoloveya Nicely said!

  • My favorite picture of ALL TIME. We all must aspire to this!

  • I find the acquittal most unlikely. Roark's (only verbal and secret) agreement was with Keating not the people who commissioned the plagiarist to design the building who were under no obligation to consider Roark's wishes and it was indubitably their property complete with its awful Grecian frescos. Also I am not at all sure that a contract to build a new skyscraper would still be valid on the death of one of the parties, especially since the signature was not even witnessed.

  • @Hendrikdevuile Keating's agreement was exposed and Keating had the Courtland contract specifically state the structure must be built as designed. After signing the contract the individuals who commissioned the plans defaulted and brought in additional architects, thus violating the terms of the agreement. The weasel who expose Roark designed Courtland actually shot himself in the foot.

As for the skyscraper contract, it would still be valid unless his estate opposed it.

  • @Hendrikdevuile - LIke the terms Roak had with him, Keating had the same terms with the clients who were obligated 'to build it as designed' but they reneged. As to the witnessing of the contract signature, the witness is us, you and me, the audience.- one should keep in mind that this is not a documentary nor a historical record but rather a dramatisation.

I wish Rand hadn't written the screenplay 'cause it's crap eg. Enright's and Wynad's lines are rushed and sound woeful.

  • Crappy dialogue, ridiculous melodrama, and a false-dichotomy of society vs individualism. Strikes me more as paranoia than an actual message.

  • @enverbatim Pure hyperbolic platitudinous drivel.

  • interesting movie, never seen it before. The message about integrety is loud and clear.

  • @amira2sirius That's what counts the most! Honor, virtue, and integrity.

  • A true Freeman on the Land.

  • this woman is completely out of her mind

  • @latinoheat10190 Quite so. She makes me nervous.

  • why is that newspaper boy giving some old drunk newspapers so he can tear them up?

  • @truvianni That's the LEAST crazy thing that happens in this movie. Ayn Rand's novel was as crazy as she was, but the movie is bizarre beyond belief.

  • @Dannys99887 There's nothing bizarre about this move..aside from the hammy acting. I'm not sure if you've understood the symbolism that this story represents as would be that of a fairy tale, but equally as valid.

  • @Avidcomp You're just intimidated by Roark's ideal. You probably have never met anyone with genuine talent and integrity.

  • @soapbxprod Are you sure that you understand that I love this film and think very highly of the character Howard Roark? Indeed, did you mean to send me your comment and not Danny (who I had responded to) ?

  • @Avidcomp OMG! Terribly sorry! Clicked against the wrong comment- my profound apologies, hope that you will forgive me! :)

  • they hate you for your INTEGRITY!

  • best part: I do not think of you . period.

  • @TheANTIGONE3 Exactly! Brava!

  • great movie!

  • TO HER CREDIT she was smart and got people to think a least for a while....

  • ochim plocha!

  • ohim plocha!

  • she was born in saint petersburg Russian in 1905,

  • rand was a russian bitch from beginning to end, once u r a bitch u r a bitch.period.

  • @TheANTIGONE3 What a horrible thing to say .You must be very angry.

  • @TheANTIGONE3 What

  • Comment removed

  • @TheANTIGONE3 People who knew her would beg to differ. Including my old friend Lizabeth Scott. You can watch my interview with her on my channel page.

  • So... by the look of the film, I get the notion that most of the buildings talked about/built do really exist. Is that true?

  • @LisaSimpsonRules1st yes; roark was inspired by frank lloyd wright, a famous modernist architect

  • @LisaSimpsonRules1st Google Queensbridge Housing project in Long Island City NY. built in 1939. As a self employed locksmith I worked for the tennents in that project. It was unique for its time.

  • The Banner was supposed to be a newspaper catering for the masses and people with bad taste. What did the hell a newspaper like that want with two ARCHITECTURE critics? Was that usual at all at that time?

  • @LisaSimpsonRules1st Look at the New York Post. Same thing there.

  • If ur doing a project and watched this 2 hour movie den u smart cuz dat book is long as hell especially if ur project is due in lik 2 days lol.

  • @kdakiki23 I actually liked it. You may as well read it. Perhaps as a summer read?

  • @bobandjim13 Judging by how many comments you left that are similar. I think you need Microsoft Word to help you make a draft of your comments.

  • @bobandjim13 Only people with no genuine argument resort to ad hominem hyperbole. Prove your point.

  • Interesting that Rand wrote the script and had final say on actors, but still was quoted in her biography as "disliking it from beginning to end". She blamed the director and editor.

So interesting that this woman could not and would not see through the thing she created and was so famous for. A total flop! Not her words. Mine. I am a person of substance, too!.

  • What does the president of the United States have to with this movie, your clumsy statement does not relate to this movie or anything else..Your trying to start a flame war on this website. Keep your political views to yourself and run for office if you feel so strongly about the perception of others.

  • If you don't understand this movie you've lost that which makes one American, INDIVIDUALISM. Obamas' collectivism is that which is preached against 62 years ago in this movie and book.

  • Thanks for posting the whole movie ... the writing is still as wonderful and relevant as the first time I saw it.

  • Who is John Galt?

  • @acg314 ur mum iz john galt

  • This movie is dumb, she whips him so he rapes her,he doesnt take a little help from a friend when offered to him becuase he's to proud even thou he has 14 dollars left to his name. She loves him but he wont give up his job for her even though he loves her too.then she marries the other guy and roark get back in the picture.and in the end he stands "triumphantly" on his building.to sappy. Some things I agree with Ayn on,but not all of it, and this me me me thing she advocates is sad and shallow.

  • @420captain Clearly you're incapable of understanding it.

  • @NinjaRunningWild Sorry but there isn't much to understand, foolish pride and narcissism? I get it.

  • A brilliant, inspiring story.

However, the movie (like most) doesn't completely capture the essence of the book.

That doesn't mean that this movie isn't good, of course. I personally think that the choice of actors (as well as the acting in itself) is almost perfect.

    Long live The Fountainhead !

May it's message live on forever !

  • Just got done with Atlas Shrugged, will need to read this one next....

  • @auctionmusic The other order would've been better as this movie is microcosmic is scope and AS is more macrocosmic.

  • I read this over the summer. I can appreciate that Ms. Rand wrote the script, and her handwriting is all over it. Gary Cooper was such a good actor, and his portrayal of Roark is just ridiculous: awkward and stilted vs. strong and self-assured. Given that the script was written by the author and that it was filmed in the 40's, the story is well presented. Just not Cooper or Neal's best. Toohey was brilliant, though.

  • I Passed my reading test By watching a movie :p

  • @temper17ify did you find it ironic that you were only able to pass this test by being a lazy second hander who takes advantage of other people's work to minimize your own?

  • @tyl0r900 just a statement before the youtube wolves come out: i'm not being entirely serious.

  • @tyl0r900 No

  • @tyl0r900 But I'll Let You Know When Your Opinion Matters ;p

  • @temper17ify not something to be proud of when you think about it.

  • Please, That's Like Hatin On Audio Books,

I'd Only Be Ashamed If I Banked On It And Failed!

But Again F*** Your Opinion, Did You Not Learn Anything From The Movie

  • @temper17ify Books and films both have their place but one does not supersede the other. You mention that you passed a test based upon reading the book by watching a movie and I only point out that you cheated yourself out of the experience of the book itself. At any rate, you don't sound like a very happy person. Hope things work out for you better. Just saying.

  • @3investigators Have you ever made a picture? I HAVE. And won Emmys and a Dupont for them.

  • @soapbxprod congrats. But that obviously hasn't brought you much happiness, has it? Now - as we were saying - how about reading a book sometime. You know, there are some good ones out there...

  • @3investigators How typical that you would stoop to an adolescent ad hominem slight. How do you know how I feel? How presumptuous of you. I have a Phil/Econ degree from Reed College- Class of 1982. Same college that Steve Jobs attended. Speak French fluently, studied Latin for four years. care to debate Hobbes, Locke, Hume, Smith, Mill, Hayek, Keynes, Freud...? Put up or shut up.

  • @soapbxprod I think Hobbes, Locke et al would agree with me that you're not a very cheerful person. Do get out and get some fresh air, won't you? It couldn't hurt.

  • @3investigators More presumptuous ad hominem. I would suggest that you take your own advice. As to fresh air, I live in New Hampshire. I bathe in it every day. Just came back from a lovely walk around my 4 acres with my bulldog Igor. Feel free to find me on Facebook- I do not hide behind pseudonyms. If you'd like to debate issues instead of hurling insults, I welcome your arguments.

    Luke Sacher

  • @soapbxprod who's arguing? I'm only making an observation. So apparently you need something other than fresh air? Only you can decide what that is. All I can do is encourage you to let go of what is troubling you. Life = joy.

  • @3investigators A rather vituperative observation. And an unsubstantiated one. As to letting go of what is troubling me- that happens to be you at the moment. Life does not equal joy by default- just ask most of humanity, that lives lives of quiet desperation at best, and misery at worst. Joy is the objective of life- and there are no guarantees of it.

  • @soapbxprod the guarantees of anything and everything is up to each of us as we are that which IS everything. There is no separation - except in our belief that we are limited and separated from other things/beings. Joy is synonymous with life. Being "troubled" (even by someone you've never met on youtube) is synonymous with fear i.e. illusion. So, it may be time to remind you I'm not attacking you. Now - "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf"? The play or the movie?

  • @3investigators Joy is synonymous with life? Tell that to a Mexican farm worker. Who said anything about your attacking anyone? As to "Woolf", the play and the movie are virtually identical. I'm done. I'm blocking you. You're either a spoiled rich kid with no job or profession, or terminally unemployed.

  • @soapbxprod Me still thinks someone needs to get out a little bit more. Perhaps then you'd be less apt to be "troubled" by the viewpoints of others - especially those on youtube whom you've never met? Just a suggestion.

  • @3investigators You're distracting me from my work. You can contact me directly via Facebook.

    Luke Sacher

  • @3investigators I mean argument in the sense of a rational debate. Not argument as in "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?"

  • Regardless, The Dialogue In The Movie Was Taken Directly From The Text, Consider It Abridged.

  • @temper17ify Bravo!

  • I Love the acting!!! Howard Roark is the MAN!!!

  • i have read the book ..i like the story more when i read it..and i dont feel howard and domnique acted upto my expectation..but still i feel move i dcent..

  • This is all about the truth and its absolute rarity.

  • -Power. What do you think it's power? Whips, guns, money? You can't turn man into slave unless you brake their spirit, kill their capacity to think and act on their own,

tie them together, teach them to conform, to unite, to agree, to obey, that's make one neck ready for one leash.

  • BE THE HERO OF YOUR OWN LIFE! BE COURAGEOUS! Don't take the advice of PARASITE AMPHIBIANS like amphibian200 below, who probably never made anything in his/her life that he/she can point to and be proud of...

  • The incorruptable Roark! We stood taller than the buildings he designed!

  • Well... Howard Roark never changed age, the buildings looked fake and the acting is horrible, but it's still better than the Atlas Shrugged adaptation.

  • Them's some seriously ugly buildings for sure.

  • @wompeter1 Let's see YOUR buildings.

  • Hilarious comedy!

  • @wompeter1 What Foma. What a Grandfalloon...

  • Oh My! Thank-you for this!

  • book was amazing
