They're not comparing it to the Corvette. They called it a 'Halo' car which is a premium model offered a car company. Chevy has the Vette and Ford offered the TBird-completely different types of cars. Like the original TBird, it was never intended to be a sports car like the 'Vette. It's a cruiser and not a spots car.
I love my white 2002 TBird and it still gets many positive comments even here in L.A.. It is NOT a sports car (like the 55-57 it was never intended to be) but it is pretty fast w/it's 3.9 liter V8. The problem for Ford was that it cost 15k more than a Mustang GT convertible even though the TBird is a Lincoln under the great looking body.
This car only appealed to old, blue-hairs who didn't care if the thing couldn't get out of its own way. It was made with cheap parts and sold for 40k! WTF!
@bestamerica jeez what is your deal, plenty of cars have gas on the right. And in New Jersey you don't pump your own gas. And when the driver and the gas cap are opposite you don't have to worry about having the door hit the gas pump or curb.
@bestamerica Huh? Those German cars (Mercedes, BMW etc.) are left side driven w/right side gas tank door just like the TBird. The reason most U.S. cars don't have amber turn signal lights is that is not the law in the States to have them. The facination w/amber rear turn signal lights is bizarre. They are NOT required in the U.S. where the TBird was marketed.
@bestamerica Huh? The new German Audi A5 does'nt have amber lights in the states either. I get the impression you know little about American cars or laws regarding taillights in the States. BTW, most car designers don't like amber turn lights as it does'nt give a clean look to the rear end. The UK is the only country in Europe w/right-hand drive cars. The rest of Europe are all left hand drive.
@bestamerica The simple fact is amber colored rear turn lights are not required in the States. The TBird did'nt have them as it was marketed almost exclusively in the US. If the law changes then we will see rear amber lightbulbs on cars sold in the States but until then car designers can use red exclusively-regardless of what some people think are safer.
@bestamerica The current law is that US passenger vehicles are not required to have amber rear turn signals. That is the law. Ford chose to have a cleanly designed taillights on the TBird and those light meet US standards. Those tailights also resembled the taillights on the classic 1955-57 and 1961-63 TBirds.
Once again Mercedes and BMWs have the gas tank door on the passenger side as does the TBird.

new ford thunderbird is still NOT good design..
ford is a lousy poor job..
my thumb down on this ford system..
1 - NO 2 yellow amber lights on the rear taillights for turning sign..
2 - NO good 2 front yellow amber turning signs on the headlights..
3 - NO good gas - in a hole on the right side while a driver on the left side
