Mario, I will admit that this ugly building has helped the LA Phil maintain its status as one of the few orchestras that are doing well financially. A new hall didn't work in Philadelphia--the concertgoers there hate Verizon Hall. The Philadelphia Orchestra filed for bankruptcy--I guess a lot of people prefer listening to their cd's instead of a live concert. lol And BTW Salonen's recordings with the LA Phil suck--there are too many blemishes in his recording of Bruckner's 4th symphony.
@waverly2468 Well, buying a CD obviously costs a lot less money than going to a concert, so it's not that they "prefer" to listen to it on a CD, they probably want to save money because after all, we ARE in a recession. Also, Salonen is the reason the LA Phil is one of, if not, the best US orchestra, so saying "his recordings with the LA Phil suck" (not to mention, only giving one example) means you must really dislike the LA Philharmonic, and would REALLY hate Dudamel.
When I visited California I got a chance to see it for myself. It was a sight to behold! It was overwelming! Magnificant! A real work of art! I LOVE this building!
Do any of the people who think this building is great even like classical music? Do they plan to spend $50 to hear an LA Philharmonic concert? This expensive, cramped building is part of an era of excess and bad decisions that also includes City Center in Las Vegas. Its original purpose was to encourage a new audience for the Philharmonic--but if people want to hear live concerts of Mozart and Beethoven they will watch them on You-Tube. lol
@waverly2468 The building was designed to be one of the most acoustically accurate buildings of its time. That's why people go to watch the concerts there. Being a musician and a performer myself, there are absolutely no parallels whatsoever to hearing LIVE music. In person.
@waverly2468 I have the Blessing to Live in Los Angeles, My Family and I go to The Walt Disney Concert Hall very often every Year, and Always is Full !!!
This is one of the most acoustically accurate buildings in the World, is a Gift to have this Building in My City!!!
@waverly2468 I think people would rather hear an orchestra with their own ears rather than listen to it through some speakers. It amazes me how you managed to troll this video long after you posted your other comment. Your hobbies really do seem to be quite exciting...
As an architect, we all talk crap about gehry's buildings at some point for being sculptures. Who cares if they are sculptures, they are unique and beatiful.
I sooo agree with gregfujita... I'm not a fan of Gehry's work at all, but the documentary (by Syndney Pollack) is terrific. That says a lot about a director's work, that he can get you completely absorbed into a subject who's buildings you don't even like : ) I've watched it many times and highly recommend it: "Sketches of Frank Gehry."
I really appreciate the numerous negative comments about this cramped, uncomfortable building. All of the architects who built this piece of junk should be forced to sit in one of their cramped seats during a really LONG piece, like the Mahler Symphony #5. This expensive building went way over budget and when donations were solicited, very few in the entertainment community came forward. When California really goes broke, we're going to wonder why we wasted money on boondoggles like this.
It was mainly for Classical Music, which isn't entertainment. Their main priority was the sound that would come out. Take your trashy comments somewhere else.
I like how nobody mentions that this building is a death trap. Firefighters downtown warn me not to attend any packed concerts in there because there aren't enough emergency exits in case of fire or earthquake.
Apologists for Gehry assume incorrectly that his critics are motivated by envy. No, they just expect more from architecture than contrived, superficial clutter, no matter how well shilled by Sydney Pollack.
I'm not an apologist, in fact I don't think artists should apologize for their work. Some architects should, especially when when they design schools to mimic prisons.
I wonder if you've been inside a Gehry Building and know first hand what the space looks like? Some how I doubt it.
Huh? Disney Hall is his best work. I don't think there's anything chaotic about it. It's actually his least messy work, fully realized and consistent.
As much as I hate My Gehry's work and the mess that he made of Disney Hall, the documentary itself is remarkable and Mr Pollack did a fantstic job documenting Frank's work all over the world. in my opinion, I just think his work is a bit crude and chaotic. I dont see sails when I see Disney Hall, I see a shiny reminder of a fallen, crushed post 9/11 building. The original 1988 design is so different and much more preferred in my taste.

when you design something like this, make sure you put enough fire exits in there, ok?
Otherwise, stop being a jealous ass.
