This got nationwide US airing on ABC-TV when it was shown as part of the saturday morning TV show "THE CURIOSITY SHOP" , show #4 titled "TOOLS" first aired on OCT 2 1971 at 9am e.s.t. Still as disturbing as I remember it at age 8!
@GOJIRAFAN1963 - It also aired on "The Great Space Coaster", minus the credits, so it was only several years later that I discovered it was a National Film Board of Canada cartoon.
To this day, I still find parts of it VERY creepy!
The first time I saw this was in 1982. I was thirteen, and the film had been out for about eleven years. it was hilarious back then, and is still funny!
"The next time, we give the fire to the woman." Umm... weren't they watching Poopsie's wife leaving the iron on and then trying to put out the fire with a perfume diffuser??? ;)
As a kid back in the 1970's, I can remember how this short film was shown alot, at least once once every summer camp vacation.
But why Can't I find 1979's - National Film Board of Canada's; "What The Hell's Going on Up There" ?
Biting humour, OUCH!!.. indeed.
Abolafia does point out who is running the show (only few Jewish jibes). So he does set it to 'brainwashing' sarcasm kindly make alittle fun at America's way of looking at the world. Overall the short film creates true laughter.
@Ellipser Hmm, I do believe you can purchase that particular DVD from the National Film Board website...but I haven't seen any links to a free viewing, myself... still, we can hope someone will post it here one day! :)
@cstoczyn - Not Grover. Goriddle. This puppet (along with Gary Gnu) were on "The Great Space Coaster". They were played by Kevin Clash, who later joined the Muppetteers on "Sesame Street". He's most famous for bringing Elmo to life.
@Greenless001 That's terrible that it didn't show up sooner during your dedicated search! :O Which proves, I suppose, that the YouTube search engine isn't all it's cracked up to be. :( Wow, I wonder how many others have missed finding it in all this time...? (Mind you, the thumbnails that I had to choose from didn't really illustrate any of the great moments from the film, so it's not easy to spot right off the bat).
My family and I have been saying "Where's the butter?" "It's right next to the creeeeeam." for years. Took me that long to finally figure out what his cartoon was called.
No problem! I too saw it as a kid, but those fire-demons (combined with that intense violin music) gave me nightmares for years!! Now, of course, in my advanced age, I love every bit of it... :)

I love the final line: "In the end, all was chaos and fire. The gods were angry. Again."
In other words, humans are stupid, and, given half a chance, they WILL screw up.

YES. A THOUSAND TIMES YES. I have been looking for this forever.
The "...Cream?" thing has been a running joke in my family for years. I was under the impression it was called "Where There's Smoke...".

@Lonpon Yes!!! You're not alone in that...it took me many, many moons to remember what it was called, too...
