@joser81 This show was performed/recorded for MTV's UNPLUGGED on April 10, 1996. And, yes, it is Layne Staley singing who passed away from a drug overdose ca. April 5, 2002. So sad.
Untrue on the Hetfield comments there Hetfield never really new Layne he mocked him during the entire 94 tour where they toured with AIC because of them cancelling shows due to Laynes herion abuse Hetfield decided to mock Layne as if he were shooting up on stage Layne never forgave that Only truth to that is Jerry Sean and Mike do indeed have a long friendship with Hetfield Layne however never did
Metallica have had some good albums but since the black album it has all been crap. lets face it and is for taking the piss out of layne..Hetfield's always been a twat
Holding rare flowers in a tomb....." In Bloom". Is that a reference to Kurt Cobain and his death? Nirvana had a song called "In Bloom". Anyone else think that is a Cobain reference?
@KeepRockin55 Considering the song was released two years before cobain's death, it seems a bit unlikely. The song in bloom was the last single released from nevermind, so while it is possible that there is a bit of northwest area wink there, it is just as likely that it's a coincidence.
I support both bands... sorry if I was misinformed but Metallica pulled that stunt before Layne's death... I'm sure they regret it... The only person Layne ever discriminated on stage, was the Nazi supporter he bitch slapped at one of their shows in Europe... hahah you have to watch Layne OWN that skinhead
I really don't think Alice in Chains should have came back!!!! It will never be the same without Layne but don't get me wrong I heard same of there new shit, not bad but he is know where compared to singing like Layne!
at 3:40 layne drops it just like it was the record. i mean he aint lookin his best in this vid but shit on me im just so impressed and love his voice. damn layne. damn.
There will never be another Layne Staley!! His voice is so unique combined with Jerry Cantrell's writing and composing. This sound will never be recreated!!! And Fuck James Hetfield!
I'm surprised so many people agree with me on my comment...75^? I didn't think so many felt the same way. This song is absolutely beautiful. I'm not a fan of concerts, but I would literally give anything to see him sing this song just 1 more time...it's simply brilliant..
F*ck Metallica for hating on Layne and making fun of his death on stage at one of their shows... Hetfield's voice is shit compared to Layne... it pains us all to lose such a talented artist to drugs, and Metallica just laughs about it. RIP Layne, you are such a talented artist and your music will live forever
Metallica was upset that AIC didn't tour with them. James is an asshole for doing that at that time. Later they wrote a tribute song but it didn't make it on their album. The Metallica drummer named his son after Layne and Jerry is good friends with him.
@TheBcpoe I've seen the footage where Metallica did the needle stabbing motion. I've also heard Lars' joke about the color of Cobain's eyes. In an interview around the release of Death Magnetic Kirk Hammett had said that during the writing process Hetfield had a picture of Layne Staley around as sort of inspiration. I always took these as Metallica saying "You had things good and fucked yourself up" in hopes that fans wouldn't do the same. Their own struggles with alcohol suggest this as well.
@TheBcpoe James Hetfield made fun of AIC back in 1994, Layne died in 2002. Back then the two didn't like each other but after Hetfield sobered up he stopped hating on Layne. Metallica never made fun of Layne's death. The two bands even performed together. I understand your anger but be informed on all the facts before you rush to judgement.
@pauliedoubled because people with drinking problems project it on to others, its not that hard to figure out really. people with drug and drinking problems do dumb shit.

Although you are right about James never coming close to Layne's talent.
@TheBcpoe For your info bro, Metallica was just raggin on him because he was supposed to open for Metallica, I think it was bad taste on James part, But as far as Metallica puttin down Layne after the tour was done is BS, I miss Layne as do many of us, May he rest in Peace.
Layne Stanley was way fucken ahead of his time, RIP my friend you've left your awesome music with us to indulge in it , your capsule may be gone, but your soul remains thank you for the incredible "MUSIC" !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Layne Stanley was way fucken ahead of his time, RIP my friend you've left your awesome with us to indulge in it , your capsule may be gone, but your soul remains thank you for the incredible "MUSIC" !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There is no more a soulful version of song sung by anyone in this modern era of music. This is gold. Layne was a vocal genius who broke the limits of genre. So much soul for someone singing alternative rock.
5 people were instantly blinded by the sheer awesomeness of this song that they clicked the dislike button on accident. There is no other explanation, bless their souls.
hehe its funny, after as many times as aic played together and shit and @ 2:19 to 2:22 the look on jerry's face still says "damn, layne's voice still makes my soul shiver" lol
I love this song cause it's hauntinglu beautiful, but i can't seem to understand som parts of the lyrics. what does "see my heart I decorate it like a grave" mean ? and "i have been guilty of kicking myself in the teeth" ? i mean, i know what it means, but i dont know what i means in this song :) please help =)
@deathinvain0 It's common for people to put flowers on graves and write "Rest in Peace." He's saying his heart is gone. And "I have been guilty of kicking myself in the teeth" is him talking about how he always gets himself in trouble.
@deathinvain0 "See my heart I decorate it like a grave" in my opinion means there is no joy in his heart. It's cold, lonely, dark. "I have been guilty of kicking myself in the teeth." Means he is too hard on himself, or doesn't care about his well being. This song was written by a person in a great deal of pain, in my humble opinion. Sadly he seemed to be as he died too young.
@ejflesher ...Ironically...he mostly likely would never have written what he did and have such a voice that vibrates right where the pain is...that has drawn millions to this band and music if he was not in the place he was....irony of life....and even in that pain he was able to be more honest through music than most of us will ever be about where we are and how we deal with the shit in life that most eyes don't see.
I have my days when I feel like this like today. Why do the best musicians have to die so young? RIP Layne Staley Will and forever always listen to your music to get me through the bad times.
Hi I'm from Chile and the english is not my idiom but I've learned it with the music that I like... I have a question ... is the verse "See my heart I decorate it"??? or is it "See my heart I decorated" ??????¿
The easiest thing in a world..to run away to a hole, hide and suffer. Most comforting feeling in a world, and the least responsible.. to turn the back to all you love, and to life, however screwed that life is.. there is only one life..there is nothing after it..
@maktar72 so true. i oftened wondered though, what it would be like if chris cornell would have started singing for aic after layne died. instead of duvall.
@sandy0260 yah... just had to comment.. been a guitarist, singer, writer for over 25yrs.. AIC had a real way of writing music and lyrics that wove around each other. the harmonizing and vocals-period, are incredible to this day. to me, JC & LS had an alomost beatle-esque way of harmonizing that still amazes me. Lane was a very gifted writer/singer who i wish had made it. i listen to them often for many musical reasons.
Layne messes up like 2 or 3 times in the whole show and the only real noticeable slip was in sludge factory. And what does it really matter who did more or who wrote more? I hear that shit all the time between Layne and Jerry and it's getting old. They had a chemistry btwn them that was special and now it's gone.
@alicat76usa your right, people say shit like one was better than the other blah blah blah. but really jerry is the better all round musician and layne has the one amazing talent of his vocals
There are few things on this earth that evoke such emotions as listening to AIC. The music is so absolutely beautiful it leaves me breathless, on the verge of tears. And then I ingest the pain from Layne and Jerry's harmonizing and I can't help but weep for the late, young Staley. My only hope is that he found his peace that he tried so hard to obtain.
Perfection is a pedestal rarely seated. But this song is it.
@phishtrey.. Nice comment. I share the same emotions. AIC is a drug I take everyday that puts my soul at ease.
I'm so stoked the rest of them chose to move on and create music. Just think about the motivation they now have to write from. It's going to bring a whole new dynamic to their music, I'm so excited to hear their next piece.
If you want to listen to another great Seattle band that hasn't been discovered yet, type in " fixed right through the left ". Watch all of their songs!! ^_^
Poor William will always be compared to Layne and who the hell can measure up to that voice?? AIC can move on with another frontman but it will never be like this again!
Yeh they might have replaced him but do your research on this!! Is william Duvall really as good as Layne Staley? Ill tell you the answer to that, NO!! There will never be another Layne Staley!! So has he really been replaced??
I can only imagine the pain lane must be in right now. I feel so sad for this man. Its almost as if he accepted the fact that the drugs was going to kill him and there was nothing he could do about it. Everything from the lyrics to his eyes just speak of suffering. Such a deep song....
love their harmony on this song

Hi I'm from Chile and the english is not my idiom but I've learned it with the music that I like... I have a question ... is the verse "See my heart I decorate it"??? or is it "See my heart I decorated" ??????¿

The easiest thing in a world..to run away to a hole, hide and suffer. Most comforting feeling in a world, and the least responsible.. to turn the back to all you love, and to life, however screwed that life is.. there is only one life..there is nothing after it..
beautiful song btw..

This song is just pure fucking genious. Layne's voice is simply the best here and the emotion of it cuts through you. The lyrics are just so good.
RIP Layne, true musical legend.

cantrell - staley is one of the all time great musical pairings in history. this is clear evidence of that.

They had a chemistry btwn them that was special and now it's gone.
alicat76usa 2 years ago 3
@alicat76usa your right, people say shit like one was better than the other blah blah blah. but really jerry is the better all round musician and layne has the one amazing talent of his vocals

There are few things on this earth that evoke such emotions as listening to AIC. The music is so absolutely beautiful it leaves me breathless, on the verge of tears. And then I ingest the pain from Layne and Jerry's harmonizing and I can't help but weep for the late, young Staley. My only hope is that he found his peace that he tried so hard to obtain.
Perfection is a pedestal rarely seated. But this song is it.
Nobody makes music like this. Nobody.
phishtrey 2 years ago 5
@phishtrey.. Nice comment. I share the same emotions. AIC is a drug I take everyday that puts my soul at ease.
I'm so stoked the rest of them chose to move on and create music. Just think about the motivation they now have to write from. It's going to bring a whole new dynamic to their music, I'm so excited to hear their next piece.
If you want to listen to another great Seattle band that hasn't been discovered yet, type in " fixed right through the left ". Watch all of their songs!! ^_^

Poor William will always be compared to Layne and who the hell can measure up to that voice?? AIC can move on with another frontman but it will never be like this again!
alicat76usa 2 years ago 3
Yeh they might have replaced him but do your research on this!! Is william Duvall really as good as Layne Staley? Ill tell you the answer to that, NO!! There will never be another Layne Staley!! So has he really been replaced??

ZACKALACK8999 2 years ago
I can only imagine the pain lane must be in right now. I feel so sad for this man. Its almost as if he accepted the fact that the drugs was going to kill him and there was nothing he could do about it. Everything from the lyrics to his eyes just speak of suffering. Such a deep song....
