What we know and don't know about using the $8,000 tax credit for down payment assistance

i just bought a home and im closing at the end of august. i make roughly 20k a year and the house was 82k

when do i get the $8000 tax credit? does that mean when i file my 09 taxes i will get a check for $8000?
