To Respond to an earlier comment. Randy Schmidt & I are all good as far as I'm concerned, we can be friends, I could actually add many chapters to the book (Little Girl Blue) HOWEVER, that's really the only area we differ, if I didn't get blessings from RC to do a book I wouldn't. That's just me. We all share the Love for Karen, in different ways, some as fans, some as friends, & some as family & I would like to believe Randy does as well. Little Girl Blue is 100% accurate no question about it!
Today someone uploaded a bunch of Carpenters videos on youtube that uses Karen to proselytize their religion. After the song is done It says Karen sent a letter from heaven to all her family and friends and it goes on and on about how to be saved. I found out by clicking on the "Rainy Days and Mondays" uploaded today and then clicked on the channel and they had done the same thing with most of the big Carpenters hit videos. I would contact Richard about it if I knew how.
@bigtrukdon I saw those. I think it's ironic when Karen herself said, "I don't need to go to church and listen to some preacher tell me what to believe in. I don't dig that at all."
I remember I was about 12 yrs old when when My older sister drove us past Karens parents house in Downey, the location where she passed. I guess it was a few hours after the discovery of her body and I recollect, the whole street was blocked off by police and media trucks we're parked along Firestone Blvd. I said to myself, wow...what a big beautiful house!
I would like to put this one out there & roll the Dice for the world to read & see what they think of this idea. I would Love more than anything in the world for Richard Carpenter to get the Carpenter band together (including Herb, & Burt who were a Big part) & do a tribute show for Karen &Tony. Why not one more time, for the good old times. Everyones getting older each & every year, I really believe in my heart that this would be special & Karen could be included on a Big Screen with Pictures
As for The Carpenters & The Hall of Fame. Look friends, The Carpenters did their own thing, ONE BIG THING, that people should know is they didn't sign up to be on anyones team, or kiss anyones ass. They recorded, did touring galore around the world,, recieved grammies, best selling American group between 1970-80. Richard even says,"you dont have to like us, but you can't say we're not good" They we're ORIGINAL, & that pisses people off still today. Even Donny & Marie has seem to forget KC & RC.
The truth about Karen is she was super shy & to go out to perform in front of people she would just put on a face go out & do it, Yes she was sincere & happy out there once she was up fronting the band, but it could be hard for her inside even though she never really had a hard time going out & performing. Just a little tid bit, Karen also didn't take all of the Laxatives that has been reported over the years, if she did she would have been dead many years earlier. Syrup of Ipecac killed Karen.
When you think of the book Little Girl Blue & the emphasis to make Richard Carpenter look like the bad guy, isen't it sad what the world has come to... Have you, or me not made mistakes in Life, or said if I knew then, what I know now. The most important think that I could share that I'm most certain about is that Richard Loved Karen more than anything on earth. Many don't respect the book, but it doesn't mean were going to put Randy Schmidt's home address on You Tube even thought we have it.
@DavelovesRealMusic Don't you think that would be a little to harsh to do that to the camera man, he may get hurt. Maybe we should tie you to a tree out in the middle of no where & check back with you every month. Get real this was 1974, not 2011
@vmuto1 1)Dont you understand metaphor and cynicism. If anyone thinks that making money off of someones misfortune is cool, then you need to read Little Girl Blue, because Randy Schmidt has done just that. So Sad!

WOW!! KAREN CARPENTER WAS TRULY GIFTED. I REMEMBER CRYING AND BEING REALLY HURT AND CONFUSED WHEN SHE PASSED. I WAS FOURTEEN AND HAD NEVER EXPERIENCED LOVE YET BUT HER SONGS TOUCHED MY HEART AND SOUL SO DEEPLY THAT LISTENING TO THEM TODAY IS LIKE "SWEET DEJA VU." LUTHER VANDROSS DID HIS VERSION AND I AM LUTHER FAN, BUT KAREN'S VERSION IS THE ORIGINAL ONE THAT HOLDS A SPECIAL PLACE IN MY MEMORY.
After Karens death the family agreed to film a tv movie about Karen and her illness. They filmed in Downey CA at the house Karen grew up in her parents still lived there. A crew member asked to use the home phone and they said yes and left him in the office. On the desk were stacks of photo albums. And the majority were photo's of gifts sent to the Carpenter with the date and who sent it.But there was one shocking album with dozens of pictures of Karen in her casket. SAD!
@TheSassyDread The song, "Superstar" was written by Leon Russell and Bonnie Bramlett, at the request of singer Rita Coolidge and was written about Eric Clapton.....Bette Midler sang the song originally on theTonight Show back in the early 70's....Richard Carpenter saw Bette Midler singing the song on TV and changed the melody and lyrics somewhat..... True story.
Haunting melody. This song still makes me sad. I was pining over my first love when this song came out. But, even though this performance may have been in 1974, the song actually was a hit in 1971.
I REMEMBER WHEN THEY CAN TO CRANSTON RHODE ISLAND . JUNE 1973 I WAS 10 YRS OLD. IT WAS A SOFTBALL GAME . THE WPRO ALL STARS - CARPENTERS. ALL I RMEMBR WAS AFTER THE GAME . THEY SERVED HOT DOGS AND BURGERS. SHE CAME UP TO ME AND SAID WHOS THIS GOOD LOKING GUY AND SHE PUT HER ARMS AROUND ME IN THE LINE SHE ASK SRE YOU A HOT DOG GUY OR A BURGER I SAID I LIKE BURGERS. SHE SAT NEXT TO ME THIS WENT ON FOE A ABOUT 45 MIN TO 1 HOUR THERE WAS MORE BT NOT SPACE HERE. I'LL NEVER FORGET .
@46singledad46 what was that more to say? i;m curious. in 1973, i was 13y.o then. . . i always hear karen's songs in our household then because, twas my +papa's favorite
I'm 44. I remember my big brother who was 18 at that time was hearing and hearin all the time in my country Bolivia, I was 8...I never forget. They were the best.
What is so sad, is Karen Looked skinny there...one person told her she looked fat...and that's all she wrote...the anoxeriz was born.....she looked fine and yet someone thought she needed to lose more weight....and she lost that battle! She lost the weight...and we lost her!
I don't like it when people say Richard was the talent. Richard did nothing but perfected his piano skills all his life. Karen did what? Play outside? It was not until she was a teen where she developed musical talents. She taught herself to play the drums.
And the fact that she is the best singer out there and learned to play drums by herself means she's a NATURAL TALENT. There are better pianists than Richard but she is the best singer.
Don't underestimate him. His studio skills and his musical arrangements were designed for Karen's voice and style and another person might not have been able to make the right material to bring out the best of her lovely voice. I think Karen would actually agree here if she was here.
They were a team, so I certainly wouldn't say that one of them was the talent. They were each good at different things. Karen's drum skills are under appreciated though.
@christo930 I'm sorry for what I said earlier. Yes Richard is one of a kind but what people fail to realize is Karen had just about the same potential as Richard if she was given the chance. She was naturally amazing at drums without any formal training but they deprived her of playing it. Since their Horizon album, she didn't drum anymore.
christo930, but Richard never took Karen too a hospital when she looked like a walking corpse... and this guy is still living a lavish life off his sister's awesome voice! Somebody could have saved Karen but they chose NOT TOO!
Karen's family did everything they could to help her, including Richard. They got her in the hospital, put her in touch with people they could help... At the end of the day, you can't stop people who are bound and determined to do something without locking them up in some way. It's a tragedy, but it's not Dick's fault.
plus eating disorder was not widely known back then. Karen Carpenter's death brought attention that and many other eating disorders. The family just didn't know what they were dealing with. The doctors didn't realized that the sudden weight gain was a strain on weaken heart from the constant dieting would killed her. I was sadden to hear of her death when it was announce on the radio.
Vegas787 I agree with you in part. They could have saved her. I am not if they intentionally wanted the money. We are soooooooooo much more advance and intervention savvy than they were when she died in the 80's. Did she die in the 80's? I'm not sure I was still a kid in the 80's.
Yes, in 1983. She was getting treatment before she died, but as you said, they were not as advanced then as we are today, and she had already been suffering with it ffor years. Her body couldn't handle putting on that amount of weight so quickly after so long starving herself. I don't think Richard or the family is to blame, though I do think their mother is/was very overbearing from what I've seen of old interviews.
I agree with you. They were a team. Karen had a wonderful voice, but Richard made excellent musical arrangements for her. The Carpenters were a combination of several talents.
@zeeky33 She's probably one of the most soulful women to ever grace a microphone with her beautiful voice; too young--so sad. Karen Carpenter is Still a Superstar, in my humble opinion--and that's saying alot, considering the fact that I'm a hardcore Punk
Heart Attack caused by years of abusing her body via anorexia nervosa. A very tragic and premature ending to one of the really great singers of all time.
@sharki369 : Richard is not her "sidekick". Even though Karen's voice could beat 1000 angels singing, Richard's an amazing composer/pianist/producer. I don't think it's fair that his talent is overlooked so often. Karen and Richard wouldn't have made it so far in the music industry on their own. Neither of them were "sidekicks" to each other. Remember that.
I agree. His talent never escaped me. Karen's death must have been hell on him. He was every bit, if not more talented than Karen and we all know how great she was.
Karen was his side kick. Richard Carpenter, her brother, wrote the songs, started the group and "discovered" Karen. Very cute guy, I thought. A real loss that Karen died so young. She had the best voice I ever heard. Madonna is a huge Karen Carpenter fan.
This song, the only song they did that was really great, was NOT a Richard Carpenter song. He wrote easy-listening pop stuff, but good for what it was.
I love the Carpenter's version and Luther Vandross's version...but the version that inspired it all was Bette Midler's. Richard Carpenter heard her singing it on the Tonight Show and supposedly Karen didn't like the song because felt it was a bit risque so they changed the lyrics to better fit their clean cut image.
Although Luther Vandross did a great job remaking this song, i have much respect for this original version.wonderful job by Karen Carpenter and for that matter all of the Carpenter songs
If I may, I'm a big fan of the Carpenters and I love this song in any version. However, do yourselves a favor and listen to the version by Luther Vandross.
I have and it just sounds _wrong_ for a guy to sing this song. Historically, there just haven't been many, if any, guys who were groupies. He's very talented and has done a lot of good stuff but this song was better by Karen or by Rita Coolidge.
YEEEES , we know. IN FACT I was a kid in the Carpenters era (born 1968) The Carpenters were soo talented. True Sonic Youth did a haunting, and a moving version, BUT NEVER will compare to Karens ORIGINAL version.
what's unique about Karen is that she dresses conservatively and still sells records, unlike some of today's singers who feels like they have to dress provocatively or show their boobs, goochie, whatever just to get attention for their songs.
the difference between someone that has actual vocal talent and those who need to use sex to sell their product.. Karen was one in a million and will be rememebered for years to come...
Thank you for your comment. I'm glad i'm not the only one who feels this way. I'm sad that I was born in the late 80's and missed such wonderful talent like Karen. We are sadly lacking today :( xx

Karen's drum skills are under appreciated though.
christo930 2 years ago 4
@christo930 I'm sorry for what I said earlier. Yes Richard is one of a kind but what people fail to realize is Karen had just about the same potential as Richard if she was given the chance. She was naturally amazing at drums without any formal training but they deprived her of playing it. Since their Horizon album, she didn't drum anymore.
benjsinister 2 years ago 3
christo930, but Richard never took Karen too a hospital when she looked like a walking corpse... and this guy is still living a lavish life off his sister's awesome voice! Somebody could have saved Karen but they chose NOT TOO!
vegas787 1 year ago
Karen's family did everything they could to help her, including Richard. They got her in the hospital, put her in touch with people they could help... At the end of the day, you can't stop people who are bound and determined to do something without locking them up in some way. It's a tragedy, but it's not Dick's fault.

plus eating disorder was not widely known back then. Karen Carpenter's death brought attention that and many other eating disorders. The family just didn't know what they were dealing with. The doctors didn't realized that the sudden weight gain was a strain on weaken heart from the constant dieting would killed her. I was sadden to hear of her death when it was announce on the radio.
miscbills 1 year ago 2
Vegas787 I agree with you in part. They could have saved her. I am not if they intentionally wanted the money. We are soooooooooo much more advance and intervention savvy than they were when she died in the 80's. Did she die in the 80's? I'm not sure I was still a kid in the 80's.
AbleInTruth 1 year ago
Yes, in 1983. She was getting treatment before she died, but as you said, they were not as advanced then as we are today, and she had already been suffering with it ffor years. Her body couldn't handle putting on that amount of weight so quickly after so long starving herself. I don't think Richard or the family is to blame, though I do think their mother is/was very overbearing from what I've seen of old interviews.
razorangelfreak 1 year ago 2
I agree with you. They were a team. Karen had a wonderful voice, but Richard made excellent musical arrangements for her. The Carpenters were a combination of several talents.

@SouthDownIPLO ... I agree, and what's more, I think she is still is one (if not the) best singers in the world...
zeeky33 2 years ago 2
@zeeky33 She's probably one of the most soulful women to ever grace a microphone with her beautiful voice; too young--so sad. Karen Carpenter is Still a Superstar, in my humble opinion--and that's saying alot, considering the fact that I'm a hardcore Punk
onestupidman 2 years ago
I heard this on Juno and I always thought this was Luther Vandross's song... really nice.. How did she die?
bria129312 2 years ago
Heart Attack caused by years of abusing her body via anorexia nervosa. A very tragic and premature ending to one of the really great singers of all time.

what ever happen to her side kick
sharki369 2 years ago
Her brother Richard, is living the good life, in Thousand Oaks, CA and is quite active in the community.
Elite59 2 years ago
@sharki369 : Richard is not her "sidekick". Even though Karen's voice could beat 1000 angels singing, Richard's an amazing composer/pianist/producer. I don't think it's fair that his talent is overlooked so often. Karen and Richard wouldn't have made it so far in the music industry on their own. Neither of them were "sidekicks" to each other. Remember that.

I agree. His talent never escaped me. Karen's death must have been hell on him. He was every bit, if not more talented than Karen and we all know how great she was.
ladylike1980 2 years ago
sharki369 -
Karen was his side kick. Richard Carpenter, her brother, wrote the songs, started the group and "discovered" Karen. Very cute guy, I thought. A real loss that Karen died so young. She had the best voice I ever heard. Madonna is a huge Karen Carpenter fan.
ladylike1980 2 years ago
This song, the only song they did that was really great, was NOT a Richard Carpenter song. He wrote easy-listening pop stuff, but good for what it was.
SHE was the talent.

He's very talented and has done a lot of good stuff but this song was better by Karen or by Rita Coolidge.

what's unique about Karen is that she dresses conservatively and still sells records, unlike some of today's singers who feels like they have to dress provocatively or show their boobs, goochie, whatever just to get attention for their songs.

the difference between someone that has actual vocal talent and those who need to use sex to sell their product.. Karen was one in a million and will be rememebered for years to come...
