Phil plays technical poker and gets mad when other guys don't and beat him. Over the long-term playing mathematically and so on will be more successful. But in any given hand or any one tournament, luck is a big factor. Unlike other sports, the very best guys will show that by finishing high in a large number of tournaments, but no matter how well they play, being the winner in any one tournament with a large field requires some luck too.

There is no way any one would be folding phil hellmuth's hand on the flop. He has an open ended and a flush draw. If Rast had Aj hellmuth was slight favourite, even against Aces hellmuth had almost 50% chance of winning. Not mentionning the huge amount of pressure he could put on any middle pairs or bottom pair. If Rast didn't have a straight or a set which is hard to flop, it would have been hard to call this all in.

Like I said with the first comment, Phil deserved 2nd. And that straight draw with the 8 doesn't warrant a 6MILL all-in with only a 500K bet on the flop with that kind of board. I'm not hating on Phil, but he didn't have a great hand to do what he did, especially since he didn't get there on his previous two flush draws. He lost it for himself, not the dealer, Rast, or the table (as Phil might think lol).

@dodgerguy1981 He had an up and down straight draw along with the flush draw once the flop came. Rast having KQ (nuts on the turn) was unfortunate for hellmuth but the shove wasnt that bad a move. The only thing that could beat him was KQ or another flush draw, which by the way is highly unlikely, figuring it is heads up. Rast is beast nonetheless and Hellmuth is obviously pissed for 3 2nd place finishes this year, anyone would be. I think both guys played great

So he kinda deserved to win. 17% of the time he will loose this tournament the way he played and unfortuanlty for him it was one of those times. But thats poker. For once phil managed the loss really well considering.

@deggen39 It depends on what position you're at, your opponent, and for how much. I think Hellmuth still had 6MILL behind. Instead of shoving, raise on the flop or flat call. There's no reason to shove that much with a bottom straight draw/flush draw 8-high. I would probably gone with it if he at least had a Q/K high flush draw, which would have given him a better straight draw, with a higher flush draw.

We can keep analyzing this hand, but in the end, Hellmuth shoved with that hand.
