Today I got a letter from Bank of America saying that my Student Checking account is up and now they're going to charge me $9 per month for checking. Considering I've only used the account in the last year for writing quick emergency checks, I have no qualms closing that along with the savings account I've had for 15yrs that was earning nothing.

If someone is giving you a better rate then bank with them. The No. 1 rule of safe banking is diversification. So, diversify your banking.
Yes, I know that. It covers the banks liabilities but doesn't cover the banks shareholders or the banks operating costs. Also, it only covers deposits up to $250K leaving a significant percentage of deposits uninsured. Stocks, bonds, T-bills, etc. are not covered by FDIC so any run on a bank can prove to be catastrophic. Case in point: WaMu bankruptcy that the FDIC could NOT cover so it had to help find a buyer for WaMu thus, JP Morgan actually "insured" the accounts of WaMu.
Actually it was the banks fault. They invented complex financial instruments that the regulators did not understand in order to make money out of nothing. If I recall correctly it was Ronald Reagan who started the era of deregulation. Ever since both democrats and republicans placate the white collar criminals. By the way the banking system collapsed under Bush. Obama has saved us from the cliff for now, but it will happen again because Obama placates these people too.

Our government did not insure bad loans. AIG did. You can't invest in financial instruments. They are a tool that banks used to run away with all our money.
That makes no sense. If your talking about Freddie Mac which is a quasi government institution that is just the tip of the ice burg. Even then it makes no sense. The government only backs up the money that is in your bank account if the bank you have your money in goes under. The root of the problem were derivatives trading, leveraging 30 to1, bundling, short selling, and credit default swaps. The list goes on and on. Wall Street would like you to believe it was not their fault.
Our TARP banks still won't compete even with the local banks and credit unions which all have better rates.
We just moved $200K from one of the TARP banks to local banks and credit unions in a town of only 20,000 population. The branch didn't blink an eye - daddy bank has lots of US citizens money.
This is a very conservative city and the branch has been largely empty since TARP due to the local mistrust of the parent bank. I expect they will close this branch soon.
If we make the big banks fail, they will get 'bought' by the fed just like the auto makers. These are signs of socialism to come. Hopefully in the end, we will still have the freedom to choose where we bank or buy cars.
Okay, I have to say that something. Taking money out of a "big" bank and putting it into a smaller bank won't do much. Sure, put your money into Main Street National but then don't be surprised if your travellers check doesn't clear when you're travelling. Also, local banks are often subsidiaries of international banks like HSBC. Plus, putting money into a small bank won't do much... many of them failed in this crisis because they played with money and invested unwisely just like big banks.

I fully support the MoveYourMoney cause. But, in summer 2009, I already checked out local credit unions when my CDs came due at an abusive bank: PNC. Regrettably, the credit unions all had special conditions - e.g. you must have some sort of association, such as a job in a particular field, such as airline pilots - in order to qualify for their ..
Time to support your local small banks and credit unions because they invest in their communities. Big banks only pretend, oh they do some things in the community but it's mostly for show, they only care about BIG profits. Time for people to take action. If only 10% of the people with money in big banks would move their money, they would take notice.
No company should be allowed to get so big that they pose a systemic risk to the financial system should they fail (i.e. AIG). The big banks & other financial institutions took foolhardy risks because they knew that the taxpayers had to bail them out precisely because otherwise their failure would take the system down with them.
There should be regulation limiting the size and scope of these large firms and allow for their break-up if they do pose systemic risk.
Take your money out of the bank. Break up with your bank thats how you do it. Say yeah know what bitch. You haven't shown me any love for the years I've been loyal to you.

Not entirely true. The fed and government may have loosened up on the laws, but it was the big banks who took advantage of the laws and also broke the laws. They are the ones responsible for turning what could have been a small recession into a full blown depression.
It is also the big banks who are cutting credit limits and raising interest rates to above 30% on people who never missed a payment.
the federal reserve set interest rates to nearly nothing meaning that banks essentially had access to free money. there was no risk involved in issuing too much debt. also you have the government saying things like "too big to fail" meaning that no matter how risky the investment that banks would make, the government would bail them out once things go bad. thats how people got screwed. also it was not a full blown depression, thats coming soon once the currency crisis hits thanks to big gov.

BTW: it's a banks priority to do what they want with the money they loan out... whether that means cutting credit lines and/or raising interest rates.
The banks don't grade bonds. Rating agencies do. Mortgages are also, not bonds. Different securities but I get you're "point."
Mortgage brokers account for about 68% of home loans in the US. Not banks. So the fraudulence came from the mortgage brokers not the banks.
STANDARD practices would have rejected the applications of the loans. However the ammendment made by Clinton in 95 to the CRA forced banks to take on sub-prime borrowers so thye could expand business as usual.

I've already done just that. I moved my meager money out of citi to a community bank. Citi had a fit and my community bank told me that their going to be able to lend much more easily because of this.

Today I got a letter from Bank of America saying that my Student Checking account is up and now they're going to charge me $9 per month for checking. Considering I've only used the account in the last year for writing quick emergency checks, I have no qualms closing that along with the savings account I've had for 15yrs that was earning nothing.

Has everyone forgotten about the fact that local bank failures are reaching into the thousands; that big banks are the biggest suppliers of credit to corporations and still very big to small business; that causing a bank run on big (or small) banks is quite possibly the worst idea to try and get back to "sound" economics?
If someone is giving you a better rate then bank with them. The No. 1 rule of safe banking is diversification. So, diversify your banking.

Yes, I know that. It covers the banks liabilities but doesn't cover the banks shareholders or the banks operating costs. Also, it only covers deposits up to $250K leaving a significant percentage of deposits uninsured. Stocks, bonds, T-bills, etc. are not covered by FDIC so any run on a bank can prove to be catastrophic. Case in point: WaMu bankruptcy that the FDIC could NOT cover so it had to help find a buyer for WaMu thus, JP Morgan actually "insured" the accounts of WaMu.

Actually it was the banks fault. They invented complex financial instruments that the regulators did not understand in order to make money out of nothing. If I recall correctly it was Ronald Reagan who started the era of deregulation. Ever since both democrats and republicans placate the white collar criminals. By the way the banking system collapsed under Bush. Obama has saved us from the cliff for now, but it will happen again because Obama placates these people too.

That makes no sense. If your talking about Freddie Mac which is a quasi government institution that is just the tip of the ice burg. Even then it makes no sense. The government only backs up the money that is in your bank account if the bank you have your money in goes under. The root of the problem were derivatives trading, leveraging 30 to1, bundling, short selling, and credit default swaps. The list goes on and on. Wall Street would like you to believe it was not their fault.

Our TARP banks still won't compete even with the local banks and credit unions which all have better rates.
We just moved $200K from one of the TARP banks to local banks and credit unions in a town of only 20,000 population. The branch didn't blink an eye - daddy bank has lots of US citizens money.
This is a very conservative city and the branch has been largely empty since TARP due to the local mistrust of the parent bank. I expect they will close this branch soon.

Okay, I have to say that something. Taking money out of a "big" bank and putting it into a smaller bank won't do much. Sure, put your money into Main Street National but then don't be surprised if your travellers check doesn't clear when you're travelling. Also, local banks are often subsidiaries of international banks like HSBC. Plus, putting money into a small bank won't do much... many of them failed in this crisis because they played with money and invested unwisely just like big banks.

Also, I have a small <$5K checking account with Bank of America, like Roma, also within walking distance from my house. To date, BoA has not abused me. But, I know that can change in an instant.
PNC were assholes - were about to charge me $25 to close out my account. So, I simply went to a different branch..

Big banks only pretend, oh they do some things in the community but it's mostly for show, they only care about BIG profits. Time for people to take action. If only 10% of the people with money in big banks would move their money, they would take notice.

The big banks & other financial institutions took foolhardy risks because they knew that the taxpayers had to bail them out precisely because otherwise their failure would take the system down with them.
There should be regulation limiting the size and scope of these large firms and allow for their break-up if they do pose systemic risk.

Not entirely true. The fed and government may have loosened up on the laws, but it was the big banks who took advantage of the laws and also broke the laws. They are the ones responsible for turning what could have been a small recession into a full blown depression.
It is also the big banks who are cutting credit limits and raising interest rates to above 30% on people who never missed a payment.
They screwed us and now it's payback time!

the federal reserve set interest rates to nearly nothing meaning that banks essentially had access to free money. there was no risk involved in issuing too much debt. also you have the government saying things like "too big to fail" meaning that no matter how risky the investment that banks would make, the government would bail them out once things go bad. thats how people got screwed. also it was not a full blown depression, thats coming soon once the currency crisis hits thanks to big gov.

They are not allowed to misrepresent junk mortgages as AAA bonds.
Plus, many of those junk mortgages are junk because many of them were approved under fraudulent circumstances.
Many of those borrowers were simply not qualified. Standard underwriting practices would have rejected many of those loans.

The banks don't grade bonds. Rating agencies do. Mortgages are also, not bonds. Different securities but I get you're "point."
Mortgage brokers account for about 68% of home loans in the US. Not banks. So the fraudulence came from the mortgage brokers not the banks.
STANDARD practices would have rejected the applications of the loans. However the ammendment made by Clinton in 95 to the CRA forced banks to take on sub-prime borrowers so thye could expand business as usual.

Note I said LARGE banks.

I got that letter from Citibank a few monthes ago - you know - the one where they tell ya they are gonna raise my interest to 28% just because the can!
I always paid my bills but now I've had it ! I told them to fuck off - I'm not paying them one more dime! Haven't paid my bill in 5 monthes! Now they are suing me! Guarantee - I'll settle for a fraction of what I owe!

I've already done just that. I moved my meager money out of citi to a community bank. Citi had a fit and my community bank told me that their going to be able to lend much more easily because of this.

Thanks Bill for the wake up call and people pay attention and never ever let this wall street entrepreneurs get a hold of our social security money, I worked hard for that money, president Bush suggested to put it on wall street, I didn't make this up, the security of our retirement is not a wall street commodity or investment and what ever you do with your money there's no bail out for us so be smart about it, some pretty boys living large off your money, what a rip off but what goes around...

Or we could adopt libertarian/conservative fiscal policy espoused by Thomas Sowell, Walter Williams, or the late Milton Friedman.
This movement will do very little, letting companies that are corrupt and stupid go bankrupt so their assets can be sold off to people with potentially better managerial skills use the capital and infrastructure for the good of others just might.

We already have a "no rules" economy for the upper 1% plutocratic fascists, thanks to the now greatly discredited Milton Friedman.
This is not capitalism, and since the upper 1% now own more than the bottom 95%, this can hardly be called socialism either.
