Production ended because of lack of sales, resulting from internal competition from comparable aircraft, such as the Boeing 777 and external competition from the Airbus A330/A340. The trijet design of the MD-11 made it inherently less fuel efficient than similar-sized twin-engine jets. Last one that buy MD11, was Lufthansa Cargo, back in 2001.
