Random trivia fact: the birth of Prince Harry was announced on the BBC during the screening of the opening episode of this series (September 15th 1984). I remember a text box popping up on the screen with the announcement halfway through the episode.
They never aired this show on my local PBS, but I caught AN episode once while visiting family in NC. I then spent the next 20+ years looking for it! I went out and found the books (which were out-of-print) so I could at least get the story! Thanks!
Also, I agree that the more modest budgets seem to inspire a greater emphasis on story & performance. In the US, there is a tendancy to simply 'throw money at the screen' & phone-in the script and direction. Mabey some day they'll offer both!
I remember...was my favourite programme when I was 7, then read the books. Agree that I was miffed as fuck that the BBC didn't finish the series though...lets bring it back! (love the titles music btw!)
I remember this show, I watched it as a kid and loved every episode. And yeah, like most people, I think it's a shame the show was never finished.
I just finished the mind-blowing effort of watching every single episode of the show from YouTube, been doing this since yesterday. Brought back so many memories. To whomever who uploads episodes and fan films here: Awesome, thx !!
I think it's very sad that they didn't do the third book. If you're going to adapt a trilogy then you should commit to all three. Loved this when I was a kid. I'd have been 11 or 12 when this originally went out.
I bet it was expensive. Those opening graphics were incredible for the time. I was working on a Commodore 64 around then, so what today a lot of us can do with some $90 editing tools, our out of the box PC's and any cheesy 3-d program, back then took a whole render farm ---and a bunch of geeks who hadn't seen the light of day since the mighty Schloor took over Middle Earth...or whatev' ---and lotsa bucks.
There is another poster who put up most of the episodes on a streaming site, including season two.
I bought the books for my 11 year old, since I loved the book series back in '78. Instead, it is my 8 year old who has become hooked thanks to You Tube.
I loved this series in my childhood/youth ... it was also my first touch to scifi at all ... no comparison to Star Trek or Star Wars later but still really cool. I think it was more authentic then the other stuff
Great theme tune. I used to love this series back in the 80's. Shame it doesn't have a bigger fan base these days - it certainly deserves another look. Maybe a cable/satellite channel will show it again? Failing that, I do quite fancy getting this on DVD!!
I heard that Jon Nathan-Turner, the producer of 80s Dr Who was furious at the BBC bosses who allocoated such a large amount of their budget to "The Tripods". He felt it should have gone to "Doctor Who", whose budget had not been increased in line with inflation since it started in 1963.
They've been talking about that for a loooooong time. I'll be surprised if it ever happens, though I'd love to see something--ANYTHING--done with the property. It's such a simple but awesome story. I used to watch the show on Sunday nights on PBS with my mom and stepdad--we all loved it and talked about it for years afterward. I found book 3 at a garage sale years later (I never read the books as a kid) and gave it to my stepdad to read and we finally got to find out how it all ends.
Hi! Thanks for watching, im stund how many people watched this in the 80's since it wasnt that popular... but theres good news , acording to imdb touchstone pictures is currently in production of "The Tripods Movie" based on John Christopher's Novel -its supposed to be released 2009! :)
Actually that's somehow bad news, for DISNEY is owning the rights to this project. I somehow have a bad feeling about the story getting, well, streamlined and localized for the american audience rather for a worldwide or european one and therefore loosing some of the subtle messages Christopher included in his novel...!
Series looks very interesting, but I have no recollection of it, Swen. Being a joint British/Australian production, it must have been shown on our local TV here. Will try and find out more.
Oh yes, "V" was also a very cool series ... I have the DVDs of season 1. I also have a tripod but it is to fit my camcorder :P But this series was also cool!
Why the fuck was this on my recommondations list? Some bullshit!!! I wasnt even born 93!!!

I loved the tripods as a kid! And i still do!
a few months ago i started looking the series again and expected to be disappointed by the crappy special effects and so on!
But the tripods have a special charme and simply because of the bad effects it affects more frightening to me...
there should be made a movie (3 parts -each 3 hours ;-))

Tripods was cancelled after season 2 because it was complete rubbish. The books were far more entertaining.

I LOVED the Tripod Trilogy as a kid but I have to say the TV show sucked by comparison.

I LOVE this show! I'm so glad it's posted. It's impossible to buy, and when it was available, the VHSs were 80 bucks!
I was totally capped for the series. Even thought the actors were good. Now, I see they're not too great, BUT, I love them just the same. Thanks!

Back then, it was the most expensive thing the BBC ever had done.

This adaptation will always be the best for me.
Lucky enough to own series 1 and bootleg 2.I can still recite parts even after 23 years.
Was amused to se a slim Pam StClement(Pat Butcher, Eastenders)in series 2.
