  • This might be my favorite live performance I've ever seen on YouTube. I don't know how anybody could watch this and not smile.

  • I love this version of the song. Steve Goodman was a great songwriter and entertainer. I wish I was aware of him years ago. What a talented person he was.

  • What an entertainer!! He will never be duplicated. Great song and a greater loss.

  • This is not a "version" of the song. This is the guy who wrote it. Coe, Nelson, Guthie, and the like are "versions" of this song. John Prine was co-writer, in this particular case. Steve has written a lot of songs on his own, his most famous probably being City of New Orleans.

Let's give credit where credit is due. And this young man deserves a lot of that. And yes, knowing that his time here was not long, especially at the time of this recording.

Thank you 1000Magicians ! Luv, Me.

  • What the hey!? I can't believe I never heard of this guy. He's hilarious and crazy talented. Thanks for the post, it made my day.

  • Gone too soon.

  • to @ojaioan, I don't feel that Steve's, David's or even John's version is the best. But, play them all one after the other and boy you certainly get a great insight into how the song was constructed and which version gave it it's fame of course it was David's. I bet Steve thanked him all the way to the bank, but, I do like Steve's version, he sure hams it up, which then emphasis his very own talent.

  • @MrsLarnche This is little different than "The Rock Island Line". There is no *perfect* version, and in fact whenever I've done any singing I incorporate parts of all the versions (and, like this song, mesh up the divergent lyrics).

  • Thanks to John Prine (whom I only discovered in the last few years!) I have also discovered Steve Goodman. I am fortunate and have extended my stay for 44years. Steve was not able to do that, which then causes me to think of the young family he had to leave behind. What a talent. Thank you so much 1000Magicians, I see we have similar tastes. I am in the process of buying all that is available of Steve's and feel blessed that I am able to hear and see him today at the end of 2011.

  • The absolute best. What a talent. Just his smile makes me smile. And he was dying and knew it.

  • what a great writer/performer steve was!

  • He should be very, very grateful to David Allen Coe.

  • The great ones always leave us to early.

  • great great great !!!! just makes me wanna smile

  • I am very grateful to see Steve Goodman in this form. I am a rabid John Prine fan, which is how I was introduced me to Steve. To see him enjoying the stage and relishing in the classic that I grew up associating with DAC is just fantastic. Thank you for posting. A true joy.

  • Wow, this is so amazing! SO much talent, such an unforgettable smile, and such a great entertainer! All despite not being well! They just don't make them like Steve Goodman anymore! :(

  • Great version of this classic song. Steve does a lot of different vocal effects that aren't in the Coe version.

  • This version is... almost sacralige to me (a DACFAN), Gawd rest Steve Goodman...and his pen.

  • @ojaioan

I think Steve's version is vastly superior to Coe's. I've never been a fan of his.

  • Saw him do this several times.... go ahead eat your heart out...

He was wonderful in concert...Just as wildly enthusiastic as in this recording..

  • Amazing!

  • i think that kids age never herd of Steve Goodman and thats sad :(

  • a great talent gone way too soon but left so much to be remembered by

  • my wish is to go back and meet him it would be a blast ;)

  • This video is my happy place.

  • He left out the best verse, the one that begins: "You don't have to call me Freddy Fender ..."

  • This is just wonderful! So typically Steve.

  • "YOU DON'T HAVE TO CALL ME DARLIN DARRRRRRRRRRRRRLIN"

  • Brings a tear to my eye, go Cubs go. R. I. P. Steve

  • If I had only one ride on a time machine I would use it to see a Steve Goodman concert.

  • Ok Watched that again, This was an audience that obviously had never heard song and they were old and stiff and high class and by end of song he won all but the one geezer over, They loved it (except that one old dude)

  • Thank You for post, I have seen alot of video n pics of him and dont think I have seen one where he did'nt have a smile on his face, He made the best of everyday he had knowing they were limited. GBY

  • I wish I were Steve Goodman.

  • Man I loved this guy-gone way to soon-Thanks Steve!

  • Thank you for posting!

  • Was that Harry Carry I saw in the audience?

  • I found this by accident.

What a lucky guy I am.

  • I saw him several times in different settings, same thing every time - he flat out drop dead stole the show. Every time.

  • A true talent !

  • A fantastic performance!!! RIP Steve.

  • and yes I Know Tha Michael Smith Wrote The Dutchman... Let it go and have some fun for a change...

  • I always said that the Brother Steve song was The Dutchman. If this fun song makes my 8yr old son want to find out more about Steve. We did our job!!! Thank you.

  • I dont ever comment on what I see on this... till now. I wish I could meet the person that posted this video. Thank you. and my wife thanks you. my son thanks you... God Bless

  • @chamberlandbigshtyle Hey, you are more than welcome ! just glad to be able to share the music and widen its appreciation.

    Laurie

  • Three words. Great Classic Talent

  • Wow, the bravery of this man--the flat out self confidence---Steve was a one in a million fellow, and as cliche as that sounds, there is no cliche in this sentiment!!

  • This is a billion times better than Coe's version! Steve Goodman is sorely missed.

  • thank you for the memory.

  • So who can name the voices he is imitating?

  • @willytee54456 The voice he is imitating is Hank Williams Sr. When he starts out the chording is like Hank Williams also.

  • funny song....great performer:O)

  • There's really nothing like Fancy Dancin . This tears for you Steve, rest in peace my old dear friend.

  • This version of the song is much better than David Allan Coe's. Steve Goodman makes me smile.

  • Man, what a treasure! They just don't make 'em like that any more. That put a big ol' smile on my face, despite the fact that my wife just left to look at horses (Lord, I hope not to buy!) Thanks Steve, for the smile and warm heart I am wearing. God bless you my friend.

And I'm quite sure, unlike country songs; my wife will be back.

  • Great Thanks for posting

  • THANK YOU. Steve still is a gem.

  • Yes. Thank You!! I have looked for this clip also. I believe this was part of a Johnny Cash TV special. Great performance. Thanks for posting it.

  • Years ago I had this clip on an old VHS tape that I somehow lost along the way. I have been searching You Tube and other websites ever since in hopes of finding an upload. It is unquestionably the finest performance of the song that Steve ever did and perfectly sums up all the postive aspects of his live shows. A thousand thank you's for finding and posting this clip. My long search is over.

  • You are welcome.glad to be of assistance !

  • Laurie

This is great, where did this come from?

    Ally.

  • Great find! Thanks for uploading.
