I love this version of the song. Steve Goodman was a great songwriter and entertainer. I wish I was aware of him years ago. What a talented person he was.
This is not a "version" of the song. This is the guy who wrote it. Coe, Nelson, Guthie, and the like are "versions" of this song. John Prine was co-writer, in this particular case. Steve has written a lot of songs on his own, his most famous probably being City of New Orleans.
Let's give credit where credit is due. And this young man deserves a lot of that. And yes, knowing that his time here was not long, especially at the time of this recording.
to @ojaioan, I don't feel that Steve's, David's or even John's version is the best. But, play them all one after the other and boy you certainly get a great insight into how the song was constructed and which version gave it it's fame of course it was David's. I bet Steve thanked him all the way to the bank, but, I do like Steve's version, he sure hams it up, which then emphasis his very own talent.
@MrsLarnche This is little different than "The Rock Island Line". There is no *perfect* version, and in fact whenever I've done any singing I incorporate parts of all the versions (and, like this song, mesh up the divergent lyrics).
Thanks to John Prine (whom I only discovered in the last few years!) I have also discovered Steve Goodman. I am fortunate and have extended my stay for 44years. Steve was not able to do that, which then causes me to think of the young family he had to leave behind. What a talent. Thank you so much 1000Magicians, I see we have similar tastes. I am in the process of buying all that is available of Steve's and feel blessed that I am able to hear and see him today at the end of 2011.
I am very grateful to see Steve Goodman in this form. I am a rabid John Prine fan, which is how I was introduced me to Steve. To see him enjoying the stage and relishing in the classic that I grew up associating with DAC is just fantastic. Thank you for posting. A true joy.
Wow, this is so amazing! SO much talent, such an unforgettable smile, and such a great entertainer! All despite not being well! They just don't make them like Steve Goodman anymore! :(
Ok Watched that again, This was an audience that obviously had never heard song and they were old and stiff and high class and by end of song he won all but the one geezer over, They loved it (except that one old dude)
Thank You for post, I have seen alot of video n pics of him and dont think I have seen one where he did'nt have a smile on his face, He made the best of everyday he had knowing they were limited. GBY
when i listen to Steve it makes me cry. We lost such a great songwriter... See ya on the next plane... at least I hope so..
Not many people know this but Steve was discovered before John Prine but he couldn't let his success happen without making sure his brother John was there to share his success. that is what brothers do... love ya Steve....
I always said that the Brother Steve song was The Dutchman. If this fun song makes my 8yr old son want to find out more about Steve. We did our job!!! Thank you.
I dont ever comment on what I see on this... till now. I wish I could meet the person that posted this video. Thank you. and my wife thanks you. my son thanks you... God Bless
Wow, the bravery of this man--the flat out self confidence---Steve was a one in a million fellow, and as cliche as that sounds, there is no cliche in this sentiment!!
Man, what a treasure! They just don't make 'em like that any more. That put a big ol' smile on my face, despite the fact that my wife just left to look at horses (Lord, I hope not to buy!) Thanks Steve, for the smile and warm heart I am wearing. God bless you my friend.
And I'm quite sure, unlike country songs; my wife will be back.
Years ago I had this clip on an old VHS tape that I somehow lost along the way. I have been searching You Tube and other websites ever since in hopes of finding an upload. It is unquestionably the finest performance of the song that Steve ever did and perfectly sums up all the postive aspects of his live shows. A thousand thank you's for finding and posting this clip. My long search is over.
This might be my favorite live performance I've ever seen on YouTube. I don't know how anybody could watch this and not smile.

Great version of this classic song. Steve does a lot of different vocal effects that aren't in the Coe version.

This version is... almost sacralige to me (a DACFAN), Gawd rest Steve Goodman...and his pen.

I think Steve's version is vastly superior to Coe's. I've never been a fan of his.
