I love the little problems they have from the excessive dry ice to the boat running astray. Times like this I wish I could've been involved in production :')
So basically Michael was a diva and a perfectionist who everyone in the show was afraid of. Awesome co-worker! LOL. I guess he was the Carlota of the show...
I like this version of "Behind the Mask" better than the one they have on the DVD of Phantom mainly because on the DVD, they didn't interview Sarah and Michael, which rather disappointed me a bit
It basically means that things went wrong and in a big way that makes people go "Oh No!"
I do theatre shows myself and there have been many technical rehearsals where it goes so wrong, the whole thing comes to a grinding halt and you have to reset and try again.
One can't fault a star for being demanding on the rest of the company, everything is riding on his/her performance. It's the job of technical staff to deliver what they're paid to do. If your props don't work, you need to get your butt chewed. As long as he's not abusive, which by all accounts is not in his character. If only today's so-called talent held to high standards.
Sarah wouldn't have done it anyway. She said she was tired of being associated with her husband and never played Christine after 1988.She got what she wanted from Anderew and the phantom then left.
Perfectionist, yes. I remember the temper from the Ahmanson in LA. Amazing how sound can carry in an empty theater. But I do take issue with the "Joan Crawford" tag. He was hard on himself while working too and never a bully.
this is all so interesting, with stories and footage from the original run I thought I'd never see. but the stories about Michael being a pain during the previews are almost dumbfounding... even though they are a bit entertaining because everyone was having to answer to the PHANTOM himself! but it seems like Michael wouldn't have a harsh or demanding bone in his body. I have a hard time putting him in the same category as other self-indulged divas out there.
Why do the person who plays the Phantom always become a b*tch? I came to know one of the Swedish "Christine"'s a little and she told be that Mikael Samuelson, who played the Phantom in Sweden (and who was magnificent!) started out as a nice guy but become more and more of a diva; he wouldn't even say hello to some people in the ensemble and sighed if "Christine" missed a note just a little...
Diva/o by definition is quite good thing to be called ( A very successful recognize singer [comes from god, goddess] ) But if you are referring to the sarcastic expression, well I don't think he was a Diva, more of a perfectionist ( all perfectionist get frustrated when something goes wrong.) A self proclaimed Diva would be some one as Carlotta ( the character) that wants all her little desires to be plesed. Kind of like when some actors refuse to drink anything but a certain brand of water.
Michael is NOT A DIVA "DragonHeart06". Watch the whole special and listen to HIS comments carefully. Andrew and Cameron sound more like Divas(even though there talented). Michael is passionate about his craft though which is what makes him so talented and such a phenominal performer. You don't fire people with MCs talent unless your crazy. I do agree he has a great voice though on top of being an award winning actor. I don't want to pay to see people who are not passionate about there craft
Michael apears in 14 minutes!?!?! MY ASS!!!!!!!! Mirror- about 2 minutes The Phantom of the Opera- about 5 The Music of the Night- about 6 I Remember/Stranger than you dremt it- 3 All I Ask of You (Reprise) - about 3 Masquerade/Why so silent?- about 2 Wandering child/Don Juan- at least 5 minutes! The Point of no Return- about 6 minutes Down Once More- fucking 12 minutes!!!!!!!! That is about 44 minutes... I know that I am whiny but I just could not let that ascape my mind!

The Lair scene in Phantom and the Defying Gravity flying sequence in Wicked are perhaps two of the most spectacular sights in all of musical theatre.

Andrew sounds like more of a diva than Michael does - firing people at will and yelling at people over every little thing.
