Had 3 at RAF Brawdy as target towers. Flt Lt Catt was a master at flying these a/c. Would take up his pipe and a hip flask. Rarely came back withought a hole or two in the tail/fuselage! Loved to beat up the airfield on his return! Could hear it at full throttle from miles away!
I thoroughly enjoyed this video, -- why? -- Because I am an ex RAF flight mechanic who worked on both the Gloster Meteors and Vampires, while stationed in Egypt, in the M.E.A.F. in the 1950's. Graceful aircraft, and man could they move, (ancient by today's standards perhaps,) but thrilling memories all the same. Thanks for sharing.
The Hawker Hunter, one of my all time favourite aircraft. Always a pleasure to see these aircraft flying, great vid, pity theres no engine noise though.
if i remember correctly, the last time the Meteor was in service in war time was in the 6 day war, when Israel retained a dozen or so from the blitzkrieg against the arabs, to act as aircover in case egypt got any of its tu-16's or il-28's in the air and past the rest of the air defenses. im not sure if they were all night fighter versions or what. The Hunter is an incredible airplane. The British sure came up with some incredible aircraft at this time.
Very nice! You can tell the difference with the pro-cameramen. They make them look so fast! Well, I suppose they are fast...
I wonder why the Brits make planes with such interesting planforms; Spitfire, Meteor, Venom/Vampire, Lightning (especially!), Vulcan, and so on an so forth. US planes are boring in comparison. I've been on an old-jet kick lately; I bet it'd be much more fun to fly an old Hunter or Lightning than a new plane like the F-16. But a WWII fighter or 1930's biplane will do!
valsthelad you lucky dog!!!!...theres new fans of these types being born every day...i get my kicks from RC versions...i was lucky enough to see the vampires still flying here in australia in the early 80s.
some kickass technology of the day.

I just realised that the last shots are planes with Switz? airforce markings. Is this a reminder that we sold planes throughout Europe?

I like the scorch marks on Martin Bakers Meteor from testing the ejector seats.

As a pilot with 43 sqd in the 50/60's I learnt to fly jets on the vampire before progressing on to the Meteor Mk7 and later the Hunters.
Brought back a lot of memories. Thanks a lot.
