  • On a ship isn't it the room where the rudder control is located; also, on a plane, right?

  • Oh my gosh if you dislike this video you are a communist i'm sorry!

  • @Luvcupramen I did it to support communist that will now be the only one doing this!

  • 11 people were on space shuttle challenger

  • @SclafaniBagni Fucking dick! people like you deserve to be exposed to the vacuum of space!

  • @SclafaniBagni That is fucked up.

  • 6:41 yeah we did it =)

  • Game Faces every one

  • I read that the main rocket that brings up the Discovery at full power uses an average sized pool of gasoline every second! nutz! :)

  • @damianomigani pardon, I meant propellent (liquid oxigen)

  • Does anyone have any HD footage of this? I'm putting together a video tribute for my dad (he retired from the Shuttle's SSME program) and I'd like to include a bit of video of the crew during a launch. I'm hoping for STS-121. I believe the footage above is from that actual flight. It is NOT posted on NASA's website.

To see another of my Shuttle tribute vids: watch?v=Qj5tHzcMe0g

  • I can't even begin to imagine how intelligent these people are. Lol, makes me feel so worthless

  • @IGotFree

How was the bitch lisa nowak able to hide her mental illness, when she applied to be a astornaut.

  • @homeboy20012009 Mental illness has absolutely nothing to do with intelligence. In fact, a lot of people who are mentally unstable have outstanding IQs and are incredibly smart. Mentality and intelligence are two very different things. As for Lisa Nowak, it's a shame she went off the deep end but I'm sure she went bonkers well after becoming an astronaut.

  • @IGotFree

She was the first astornaut In history to go pure crazy. People these days don't care If they ruin their life or their career. Hell If I had a job like hers I wouldn't care about something so stupid. She lost everything for no reason..

  • @homeboy20012009 People snap without having a mental illness. It's called being human. Astronauts are still human just like the rest of us.... And if we look deep enough every living organism on this planet can fit several DSM-IV diagnosis.... just sayin'.....

  • OK ,OK Guys stop the launch I gotta go pee ..... No mater how hard he hit the books, Lewee`s first time to go into space .he still had a blader problem.......heheheh

  • lol they have that psycho chick in their crew

  • at 5.06 you can see the flash of srb seperation wow amazing

  • they hit the books hard when they were younger and this is how it paid off

  • They seem to be able to move there arms without much effort. I thought the G-forces jammed them in there seats?

  • @Mueiwark

G forces are only intensified when accelerating. Think about when you're in a car and slam on the gas, break, or make a turn.

  • nasa is amazing! everyone come to next shuttle launch feb the 3rd 2011, am booking my flight now!!!!

  • nasa is amazing! everyone come to next shuttle launch feb 2011, am booking my flight now!!!!

  • These people get to experience something that so many of us can dream of. Of these people, I am truly jealous.

  • Aww I waana go on space shuttle

  • Why didn’t I see this earlier? OMG I LOVE YOUTUBE. They look so relaxed I wish they had an EXTRA set for me :)

  • Why didn’t I see this earlier? OMG I LOVE YOUTUBE. They look so relaxed I wish they had an EXTRA set for me :)

  • im so happy to see this, tears in my eyes wonderfull video.

  • One of them is probably wondering if they left the oven on

  • This = the real Star Trek...

    Simply amazing and nerve wracking!

  • WOW you lucky people

  • Imagine having to wait in that seating position for that long. They are facing straight up. That would be more intense than any rollercoaster in existence.

  • i forget, is 17200 mph escape velocity?

  • Imagine you forget to piss before .... you should be dry in half an hour !

  • I'm so glad that there are people who are willing to do this for us. They looked so cool and calm at takeoff! Amazing1

  • Lisa Nowak? Isn't that the chick that drove from Houston to Orlando in nothing but a diaper to confront another shuttle member over some sex scandal?

  • Comment removed

  • @chefwolf yes it is

  • Compared to this, a Soyuz launch a smooth. Check out my videos.

  • that is't rite they where able to move freely some kind on gravity cancel

  • 6:44 cool we didn t die!!!!

  • So what happens if you hit negative return and then one of your engines failed?

and that minute and a half or so where their checks are good and they are just sitting there would be so nerve wracking!!

  • @cookiesforchrist You could land in Europe, or make a single orbit and land at Edwards AFB or KSC, or reach a lower orbit depending on what happens when.

  • I would hate to all of a sudden have to shit real bad about 10 sec. before launch. that would suck

  • guessing sound went away when they left atmosphere

  • what are they writing on the paper?

  • No more of manned flight cause were too deep in debt as a nation. We can't afforded two wars, bank, wall street and AIG bailouts, health care for all spending.

    without more taxes.

Take a good look at yourself , what debt did you cause.

  • Wait a sec dont put the blame on everyday people. The space program should be free for the simple fact SPACE is what were gonna need to survive in the future. Theres milliions of other planets out there that we can use for resources

  • humans are destroying the earth, we will never be able to reach another planet in time, so we gotta learn more bout those thingss and make space crafts faster. and the space programm should be support by the goverment because nasa got a future and esa and USSR etc

  • The gov has ufo's. we have spaceships that can reach out into space. For all we know theyve been doing it for a long time. Our gov has so many secrets that we will never know

  • sure.. they got ufos, why nasa uses still space shuttles? nasa is a part of the goverment and they still use 30 year old space shuttles to fly into space

  • Scratching your nose due to vibrations is usually due to nose hair irritating the inner snot cav. I'm sure the space jocks are trimmed up

  • id be like "MOMMY"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • imagine having to scratch your nose xD you'll have to wait like 30 min

  • XD They leave our loveley earth (!!!) and can't scratch their noses. No good job, I wouldn't do that :P

  • Thats actually something that most astronauts feel the need to do (due to extreme vibrations)... If youve ever been in a car with someone who has a nice big stereo with lots of bass and you have scratch the tip of your nose from time to time ... But times that by a 1000!!!!! LOLOLOL

  • I never noticed that, maybe normally I do it subconcious. If you're right it must be NOT FUNNY^^ I'll take the next shuttle and report you my experiences XD

  • Not really. They close their visors approx. 2.5 minutes before launch and open them again after booster seperation. That's only around 5 minutes without nose scratching capability ;-)

  • @DruGeDuPmeTaLHeadXD 12 mins only till orbit

  • @DruGeDuPmeTaLHeadXD Gotta think about something else, or you can scratch ur face with the little drinking straw.

  • @DruGeDuPmeTaLHeadXD i think you're supposed to have a rough patch on the inside of your helmet for that

  • shake rattle and roll! i would love to do it, bet i would bail tho haha!

  • i dont care where there from, them people have balls!!!!

  • is the guy in the center of the screen shaking or is it just me.

  • he is shaking from the ride!!! from 0 to 17200 MPH will do that!!

  • yea i think so!

  • it looks like that they use mirrors to look things behind them since they cannot turn...I assume...

  • either that or they are just checking their hair is right.

  • why are the two astro's in the background using a mirror,to look at themselves?

  • god i love americans

  • At about 2;05 is when my heart would start racing!

  • My heart would be racing the whole time. I'd be like, "I'm about to go into space, motherfucker!"

  • Like your mind Daisy!

  • The Mission Specialist in the back center of the screen is Lisa Nowak. She is the astronaut lady that went crazy and tried to kidnap a fellow astronaut's girlfriend.

This story was all the rage back in 2007

  • i mean your legs arms hand are always still brobaly

  • I'd love to do that; but I would need a couple of stiff drinks beforehand.

  • your legs must be numb as fuck in this thing

  • i bet there was a lot of hope on this sts-121 mission because it was the first launch since the Columbia Disaster

  • This is the second launch since the Columbia disaster. the 1st was STS-114 with eileen Collins Commanding

  • i know. i just noticed that right after i post that comment

  • This.

  • <3<3<3<3<3<

  • sorry for english but how many G-force at the launch ?? and how the astronaut can moves his arms at the launch ??

  • It varies from around 1 to 3 g during the launch. You'd still be able to move your arms around, but it would take more effort to do so.

  • Thanks so much for posting this. It captures in some small way what it must be like at launch. Yes, you have trained in every way possible, but the feeling of having that much harnessed (hopefully) energy at your back, must still give at least some pause - everyone else is >3 miles away, and here you are with your compatriots, waiting - waiting..... The computers have it, and 50 miles up, you become an astronaut - could anything exceed that thrill? - I think not.

  • space shuttle??? fuel 1 Tone/s. omg ??

  • I would like to see the video of the challenger.

  • Check Nasa's Archive >.> I don't even know if they would release that to the public.

  • I believe you'd find they didn't have in-cockpit video at that time. In fact, after Challenger the amount of video of launches and landings increased from old-school Apollo equipment to tons of modern, high-powered cameras (and eventually even high def).

  • This one was the real deal. I was at the launch and the shadows and sun position were consistent with the climb and rolls I saw for the vehicle. Of note was the motion at SSME ignition and the sudden lurch at Booster Ignition, and the relative smoothness after Booster separation. We see the back seaters look at Earth through a handheld mirror. We then see the upright roll, and the Earth at an angle consistent with the pitched up attitude lined up with the SSME angle, not wings level. Good video!

  • To all those people saying the word "fake". I have 1 question for you. Do you know any of these astronauts???? I know one...Mark Kelly, the pilot. I worked his wife's re-election camp. This is anything but fake. Reality shows are fake, science is anything but fake. Infact he and I loved to chat about his missions. Yes, Lisa Nowak was a nutter...no doubt about it, she should have never been on that mission. Barbara Morgan should have.

    I love this launch perspective.

  • why does it all have to be fake? some of you conspiracy theorists need to get out more. i'd love to fly in one of these babys, they would have to cut my mike or all they would hear is oooooooh shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit

  • This is not fake...if this is not real it must be a training

  • Lisa Novak was the one that went nutty

  • 5:09 you can see a flash from the SRB sep. Cool...

  • Nice video. I think this lift off is from Pad 39A.

  • No, no, no, you've got it all mixed up: idiots like you are meant to scream fake at the Apollo programme, not this. Now, Apollo certainly wasn't faked, but, while the alleged 'evidence' to say it faked was is entirely scientifically inaccurate and laughable, you at least did have some.

  • jupiterman, huh? you have got to be kidding me!

  • FAKE, FAKE, FAKE??? Tell that to John Young, Crip, Sally Ride, Bluford, Pinky Nelson, Ox, J.R, Scobes, Zipper Mike, ect.

  • These astronauts always seems so relaxed..

I would be completely stressed out with that count down approaching zero. :D

  • They go through months of training to desensitize them to the experience. They practice it so much it becomes nearly second nature.

There is a lot more activity by the astronauts than I expected though. I figured that everyone but the Pilot and Commander would be pretty much just hanging on...

  • That's a good point, they are desensitized by their training.

I believe I've also read once that many astronauts do not really like to talk in public about those psychological effects though. I've met one astronaut after a speech and he just gave a very global answer.

  • To be honest, it's only MS1 in seat 3 that really does anything to help the CDR and PLT on ascent/descent. MS1 is designated as Flight Engineer and has a copy of various troubleshooting checklists in case of a problem going up or downhill.

  • Flight engineer is MS 2 in the seat between commander and pilot. On this mission it was Lisa Nowak.

  • Oh, have I got my seat numbers mixed up? Apologies, thanks for the correction. I had some charts somewhere but can't find them now :(

  • this is so cool you dig!!!!!!!!!!

  • This is really cool.. im subscribed 2 shuttlesource :)

  • someone needs to do a shuttle launch in high def. all camera angles. inside and out. and while in orbit.

  • I you have HDNet, they have pretty good HD footage of the STS launches. Mostly from outside. I've also seen some HD inside the space station on there as well. Very good quality.

  • Not only that but NASA TV is hoping to go HD soon. They've been downlinking live video from the ISS, not just pre-recorded stuff.

  • Go at throttle up. Full steam ahead boyz.

  • Chaz76vette is correct. Another (perhaps smaller) factor in the decision to replace the shuttle is the exorbitant cost of shuttle flights. NASA is counting on the Ares launch system to be significantly cheaper than the shuttle to operate. We'll see how that pans out. The Shuttle was billed a cheap ride to space during its development, but has been never lived up to that promise.

  • Blame that on the DoD's meddling :(

  • True. The Shuttle is the classic horse designed by committee, and the DoD did play a big part in screwing up the design. To read a brilliantly prophetic article on the shuttle, Google "Gregg Easterbrook shuttle" and check out the Washington Monthly piece that predicted most of the shuttle's current problems over 25 years ago.

  • Oh I've read that article, isn't it fantastic? And amazing to think just how correct he was. Hard to grasp that this is the guy that also writes about the NFL for ESPN :)

  • They're stopping Shuttle use because the shuttles are so old - they are deteriorating and it's too expensive to keep up with them, not to mention dangerous to fly them in their current state. They're replacing the shuttle program with something similar to the Apollo program rockets, with a capsule mounted on top of a giant rocket which will jettison away in space. The capsules will be able to land on the moon again for building a moon-base which is something the shuttle can't do :)

  • If I were the NASA administrator, I'd call for an inquiry into what the shuttle did do.

  • Okay, that was a little harsh, but you get the point.

  • 2600 ph ...

    heros

  • I want to be an astronaut too i've been wearring diapers since the day i was born

  • I'm going to be an Astronaut too!!! I already started my training wearing diapers when I travel out of town

  • Incrivel!

  • I see an un enemployeed NASA astronaut, do you know which one??

  • Lisa Nowak.

  • Bingo!

  • I'm amazed that the quality of the comms is just so bad. Are we in the 21st century or what? The comms here sound as poor as they did on the Apollo programme 40 years ago. One day there will be a major disaster caused by the fact that someone just couldn't make out what he was being told.

  • I am going to be an astronaut when i grow up and no doubt and this video is awsome and when i am 25,26,27,28,29,or 30 i am going to space and traveling on the space shuttle with the crew and also doing really cool spacewalks and cool training before going to space

  • in 2010 the space shuttles will be retired ... sorry, no chance :)

  • Way to fuck a dream for a kid.. it was people like you that made me a pilot.. but then again you are right it is being retired :)

  • Don't tell that to Michio Kaku. he thinks we'll be living in space.

  • You can go on Orion and Altair ... much cooler - Moon (base) or Mars (try and avoid the ISS flights, you'll be in LEO).

  • I'd give five years' salary to take a ride on a shuttle.

  • Imagine THAT for a job!! How well does it pay? Are the hours good?

  • Standard Governmental payscale for employees in Houston.

  • what are the peak G's during launch?

  • 3G's

  • around 4 but i wouldn't say 6

  • Oh man, you're making a complete and utter idiot of yourself. 3Gs maximum on launch, and as soon as 3Gs are hit, the throttles are moved back by the autopilot to reduce stress on the crew and orbiter. On landing, maximum G loading is around 1.5Gs at peak, around Mach 15 reducing to 10.

  • Bullcrap! If NASA asked me today to be an astronaut and start training right away, I would say yes all the way!

  • You should ask your mom for a tampon for your bleeding pussy.

  • don't worry asshole, no body is gonna pay you for that

  • Does anyone know what the mirrors are for?

  • Looking out of the various overhead windows. Remember, the ascent takes them on their backs for the first 5 or so minutes before the roll to heads up.

  • that would be an AMAZING feeling huh! i wish i could do that...

  • If I Had One Wish? No Not A Million Dollars? No Not A Girl For Every Day Ofr The Year? No To Be Aboard a Shuttle Launch Heading Towards The International Space Center! YEAH YEAH YEAH YEAH!!

  • when they say mid-deck; where's that? Is it still in the cockpit or somewhere else on the shuttle? Someone please answer this question.

  • it's another deck underneath the cockpit (shown in the video) where the other astronauts are...

  • Have you seen the Columbia accident video? Right before land, the space shuttle exploded, and all 7 on board dead.

  • YEEEEEEEEHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!

    ... ...

    ... Just kidding

  • This was the "Astro Nut", (Lisa Nowak). Wonder if she had her diapers on??

  • amazing man xxx

  • I love at 7:35 the crew in the back seat have a little mirror to look back at earth through the roof windows... awesome.

  • die you fucken looser.

  • This Discovery flight was successful dickhead.

  • ahahahahahahahahahahaha

  • He got mixed up. You've got a quick fuse to be sure. The Columbia astronauts would not call someone a "dickhead" who sincerely desired to honor their lives. They'd probably have a few choice words for you, though.

  • God bless their souls.

  • One of the most interesting films I've seen on the SST. Thanks for sharing.

  • Lisa sits at the back on the right next to Mike Fossum. Mark Kelly is in the front on the left. Next to ( not visible) commander Steve Lindsey. Mark's twin brother Scott is up in space right now with STS 118.

you can see the crew in live coverage here:

  • who is lisa nowak?

  • Impressive.

  • put simply, in the shortest of shorter shorts, i freakin love this viddy oh ooooooooooooooooooooh

  • part 2 this video ?

  • sory its 17500 mph!!
