So...in 1971 the tickets were what...$6? Led Zeppelin had made, what, 20% of their music (if that)? And they were already the best ever...awesome film...I wish I could go back to that time (but miss the draft)
I think this was at the Sam Houston Coliseum, which was pretty much where all rock bands performed on their Houston stops. The Beatles played there, for example. It has since been leveled and replaced by a new performing arts theatre.
I started playing guitar because of them. Today I wrote and recorded an original song. If you want to hear how Led Zeppelin-inspired music sounds 2011 style click on wisztrock. I think you'll like it.
i was fortunate to see them live in concert back in 76 or 77, i think it was their last tour. all the bands of today are a bunch of pussies compared to the mega-rock bands of the 70's. glad to say i saw most of them and led zep is the greatest kick ass rock band ever...
The people going to that show look different that what you'd see today. I don't mean the fashion styles or demographics. There's very few people going to the show who are overweight.
This was my first Zep show. I remember sitting out front with that big marqee saying Tonight Led Zeppelin and my heart was pounding. I'm 60 now, and those times were the greatest. My 20 yr. old has told me on more than one occasion, "I wish I lived back then, Dad." Yea, well, I thank God I did.
@caseyables I'm not your son but you were VERY lucky to see them in the early 70s. They are in like my top 5 best bands ever to see live if I had the chance.
i wonder who had the smarts to film/video this--w/audio? not easy like it is today.. I had lots of cameras confiscated back in the day..great that LZ.com supports bootlegs.
I believe I attended this concert. I'm scouring the footage to see if I can see myself in the crowd (smiles). There was very little (perhaps NOTHING) that would have stopped me from attending a Led Zeppelin concert in those days. Thanks so much for the wonderful experiences! And I'm still enjoying your work ....
I don't know about the 70's,but I know in the 80's the Sam Houston Coliseum was a dangerous place to go for concerts. Roving bands of Mexicans thugs would attack people and steal their concert shirts. They would hunt in packs sometimes 10 of them jumping 2 guy's with fists, kicks and usually knives. They would approach you at first and tell you to give them your shirt and if you didn't they would immediately pounce. The middle class white kids from the burbs were the easiest targets.
@pfigment Man.. I wish I was the age I am now, back in this time... Im so into anything 90's and back. Im ashamed to live amoungst thing modern age of music.

The most fascinating thing I notice is just how normal the clothes are. It's not that far off from what you'd see at a concert today really. Yet, pop culture likes to display 1971 as something drastically different, especially among the music scene.
95% of teens these days listen to the same crappy pop songs over and over. if your one of the 5% left who still listen to real music, thunb this up, then copy and paste it to t least 5 video's.
I have to ask......... was there one joint after another passing through the rows at this concert? And did the police just watch on as if it were a normal part of a concert?
At least that's how it went in Dallas. I went to a "rock" concert recently. What happened??? I went to the White Stripes, even Green Day.... it is just pitiful what passes for a rock concert these days. The police state has taken over and it SUCKS

@daviejtube95 Yes, I noticed that in the left speaker at 1:24, it sounds like some kind of verbal direction to the rest of the band. Though not sure what that mic was actually for otherwise- it sounds like they left it in on purpose

Long before the internet Led Zeppelin would sell out entire tours in a few hours with no advertising. No band has ever remotely approached the drawing power that Led Zeppelin always commanded. Good to see others remembering the vital roll Jonsie (John Paul Jones played in the greatest band ever. Everyone of them were equally important, that coming from Robert & Jimmy! Man was (is) a musical master
The audio is not from a bootleg--it's "Out On The Tiles" from LZ III. I know is this is a lead blimp, but FYI. The second song @ 2:50 is live... "Heartbreaker." then "D&C" and a "Stairway" finale.
I was born and still live in Houston. The first time I saw them was summer 1971 and it was the second time they came to Hou. It was in the Univ of Hou sports arena Hofheinz Pavillion. A great place for a show. Only 8500 seats and it is round so all are good seats. This was a later show in the Colesium, now torn down. Crap acoustics, but it was the first time we heard Stairway, and God, what a show.
do you know whats great about zep? they didnt have to sound super distorted to sound awesome. the only time they had a "crunch" was (rah, htwww, and knebworth) and of course on albums. which i guess gives some hope to little jimmy page fans that want to get his live tone. true it is in his fingers, but his tone is mostly "clean".
When I 1st found this I thought... Whoa, I was at this show, how cool to find video. But what was really weird was that at the beginning footage I see myself!!! That's me in the hall in the red shirt at the :024-:027 part of the video. Too Cool !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My dad Said that in 1976 or 1977 (he can't remember) led zeppelin was commin to houston tx at the colosilum and riots were breaking out becuase everyone wanted to see them live. He didn't get his tickets.
L Z played San Antonio TX on 8/26, the date on the marquee in the beginning. The previous night they played in Houston. [Dave Lewis: L Z Concert File]
So...in 1971 the tickets were what...$6? Led Zeppelin had made, what, 20% of their music (if that)? And they were already the best ever...awesome film...I wish I could go back to that time (but miss the draft)

Crap acoustics, but it was the first time we heard Stairway, and God, what a show.

is it just the filming or were concerts very dark in the 70's?

do you know whats great about zep? they didnt have to sound super distorted to sound awesome. the only time they had a "crunch" was (rah, htwww, and knebworth) and of course on albums. which i guess gives some hope to little jimmy page fans that want to get his live tone. true it is in his fingers, but his tone is mostly "clean".
Cheers
