@swansfan007 The day before, after being in a breakaway, he waited for his captain Ivan Basso to close the gap to Jan Ullrich, who recently attacked. By waiting and then ultimately closing the gap, he also helped Lance Armstrong take important seconds off Ullrich. How the german news handled this was really a shame. At the TT one day later he was booed at and called a Judas by german Ullrich fans... Indeed really dumb people.

What he means is that he would be riding in the front, taking the brunt of the wind, while sheltering his teammate behind him. Riding in a slip stream of a man in front of you, you can save about 20%-40% of your energy, and to win a race, every extra 1% counts a lot
