Other than a few who post instructional videos, such as Morten Faerestrand, and a few other unknown (but world-level) players, that's basically my opinion of the clueless buffoons who post on the YouTube forum.
I saw these guys when they toured Australia. It was the Perth Concert Hall and Steve Morse was the support (and awesome as well). For us non technicians who don't know the "rules" on how music "should" be played, there was just the sound of great musicians, in tune with each other and the audience...a memorable gig and I'm glad I was lucky enough to see it...
Well, there are certain picado lines that can be somewhat mimicked with a pick; especially the ones that are played on the higher frets, and to tell you the truth, I sometimes can't tell if it's John or Paco playing unless I look at the screen. However; I agree; it generally sounds lame when I see someone playing fake Flamenco with a pick OR fingers - especially fake Rasgueados and fake Golpes by banging the side of the guitar with the entire hand - cringe!

search youtube for a piece by a Chinese PiPa master called Swan, user hacona prepare to be blown away... in a different style and feel but you'll see where Flamenco finger style comes from.

And yet, you cited Electric Guitar Players, not Classic Guitar players, if you had writen about Julian Bream(British and Best Villa-Lobos Interpreter) I would keep my "mouth shut". @arthasbr I thought you meant players, not style. My bad! I just thought you ignorant with bad English... hahah. And don't forget the blues from the United States. I'm not going to say it's the best because there is no "best", but it's just so expressive.
This might sound funny but i think ,Paco, John, AL, all have naturally strong fingers, You can practice of course to get it, but having it naturally must be a bonus just like having talent.. Strong fingers become light touch?..
The human race will one day split into two separate species, an attractive, intelligent ruling elite lead by the great Paco de Lucia and an underclass of dim-witted, ugly goblin-like creatures, according to a top scientist.
some years into the future, musical selection could mean that two distinct breeds of human will have developed.
Men will have guitar facial features, deeper sounds, strong nails and bigger penises, Women will all have smooth glossy hairless skin, large eyesand pert breasts.
@Natsumebankai torres in 1852 decided to make a larger body guitar which best resembles a classical of today. without him there would be no guitar it would be more similar to a lute. so in actuality spain revolutionized the guitar in a way that you could definately say that they invented the guitar. so really. spain invented the guitar
@Natsumebankai ohhh and maybe you can tell us where it's been invented. Let me think... maybe... nowhere!! and it's the result of a long evolution of string instruments imposible to be located in a place and a time.
@Natsumebankai That is not exactly correct. The guitar certainly evolved from other instruments such as the L'oud (Persian and Arabic) but the 6 string instrument tuned in 4ths with one Major 3rd interval between g and b, shaped like a woman was developed in Spain.
This shows how difficult it is to say where a thing is from, it is always more complicated than that.
@coco7010 you are very correct it came from many places but guitear is a spanish word , the spanish and portugesse have many many varieties of the guitar including a range from basso to sapprano.
Espectacular! miren las tres patitas apoyadas en el piso....lo ven desde el primer al último acorde perfectamente sincronizados... llevan el ritmo en la sangre estos hdp! q mostros!
Music-wise, their work was useful to interchange visions of the improvisation with a guitar from three different backgrounds. Period. Do not look beyond: it was not based on composition. Also, they made a lot of money touring and marketing: they all opened new markets for their works. Having said that, there were interesting parts and others which were pure gymnastics. Paco tries to look for some melody more often, maybe. But to listen to his music, type Paco de Lucia 2010
@snakeweirdo you should consider the hypothesis that your assumption is premature. I am not only a listener but also a musician of several musical genres. All these musicians have composed or performed admirable pieces of music, but artistically speaking, they also have their weak points. Sometimes they are truly inspired, sometimes they are showing off or just making time. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Fair well
@Jose7Francisco I dont remember the title but im sure that its a track of their Passion, Grace and Fire album. I suggest also to listen Friday night in San Francisco.Great stuff
@schenker4 Lol. That's too cruel, but the true is Paco looks always effortless looking here, smiling, looking at John, and his notes sound always clean, no matter how fast is the piece.
If you liked this, definitely check out the album "Friday Night In San Francisco" which features these same three guitarists performing at their collective best.
Isn't a shame that these three guys were among the most skilled guitarists in the world, yet whenever they performed on TV, they were only featured at the end of the show when the credits rolled.
@SHOJMPR42 You are talking bout the Torres Guitar which is only one instrument of the Guitar family. The Egyptians had a guitar 1700 BC long before the spanish people even heard about flamenco....
Wynton Marsalis publicly dismissed Davis' more recent fusion recordings as not being "'true' jazz", comments Davis initially shrugged off, calling Marsalis "a nice young man, only confused". This changed after Marsalis appeared, unannounced, onstage in the midst of a Davis performance. Marsalis whispered into Davis' ear that "someone" had told him to do so; Davis responded by ordering him off the stage. ( Wikipedia )
@BongoBib I don't think so, but saying someone is "the greatest trumpet player we have today" (speaking in 1982) is meaningless, listen to his playing back then, there is no soul, he was just a kid with great technique. Miles could take a very simply melody and breath life into it, his life, quite an amazing life: what life had Wynton Marsalis led up to that point in time? They say in jazz about young players: "lots to say, but no story to tell". Marsalis became a bore in later life; QED.
Vamos allá Juanito !!..Le dice. Por favor...Que arte que tiene el Mambrú ..Hasta pa´eso. Porque de que toca como nadie la guitarra...Qué vamos a decir que no esté dicho ya.
By the way, for those who prefer to listen to "real" Flamenco, I suggest you procure an old Sabicas or Paco CD featuring "traditional" Flamenco. Opining on McLaughlin and Di Meola for using a pick, or whatever inane reason, is simply vexatious at best.

@thedopemaster Ahh, another dickhead who only listens to one genre and dislike the other ones, simply because he is too simpleminded. How elegant.
snakeweirdo 1 year ago
@snakeweirdo you should consider the hypothesis that your assumption is premature. I am not only a listener but also a musician of several musical genres. All these musicians have composed or performed admirable pieces of music, but artistically speaking, they also have their weak points. Sometimes they are truly inspired, sometimes they are showing off or just making time. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Fair well

It's impressive to see that McLaughlin can play close enough to on par with Paco but with a flatpick!!

schenker4 1 year ago
@schenker4 Lol. That's too cruel, but the true is Paco looks always effortless looking here, smiling, looking at John, and his notes sound always clean, no matter how fast is the piece.

Doesn't Paco look strange in this sleeveless T-shirt? Like some rock musician or something.. though the impression is quite good :)
wilderny 1 year ago
Isn't a shame that these three guys were among the most skilled guitarists in the world, yet whenever they performed on TV, they were only featured at the end of the show when the credits rolled.

@SHOJMPR42 - Actually the earliest six string guitar was built in Naples, Italy by Gaetano Vinaccia in 1779 but I do get what you mean :)
AlsatianCousin 1 year ago
@AlsatianCousin Naples was a part 45 years before that, and was dependent of Spain by then.
Sandude 8 months ago
@SHOJMPR42 And it came to Spain with Moors (Arabic nation). A+ for the history (sarcasm).
cookiekeik 7 months ago
@SHOJMPR42 You are talking bout the Torres Guitar which is only one instrument of the Guitar family. The Egyptians had a guitar 1700 BC long before the spanish people even heard about flamenco....
FunkyDebob 7 months ago 2
@FunkyDebob : Greeks, not Egytians. Even the word Guitar comes from "Kithara"= Guitar.
door34 7 months ago
@door34 the Kithara is a greek guitar based on an Egyptian model. Oldest guitar like instruments were found in Egypt.

BongoBib 1 year ago
I wonder if John deliberately belittled Miles there, by calling Wynton Marsalis the greatest trumpetplayer, - not a smart carriére-move
BongoBib 1 year ago
@BongoBib I don't think so, but saying someone is "the greatest trumpet player we have today" (speaking in 1982) is meaningless, listen to his playing back then, there is no soul, he was just a kid with great technique. Miles could take a very simply melody and breath life into it, his life, quite an amazing life: what life had Wynton Marsalis led up to that point in time? They say in jazz about young players: "lots to say, but no story to tell". Marsalis became a bore in later life; QED.
