Logia users, on the other hand, have normal bodies unless they transform into their "element". That's why most logia users, like Enel or Crocodile, train their reflexes so they automatically transform when sensing danger.

They're only not able to automatically convert into their element if they're knocked out/unconscious.

He had trained his ability of sand to a degree where he could automatically turn into sand when ever he was attacked. Smoker and Ace are strong too but they hadn't perfected their abilities like Crocodile had. This is why Luffy hit them. If this had happened to Crocodile Luffy would have gone straight through him.

Logia can be hit if they are not prepared for it. Ace and Smoker don't have Kenbunshoku Haki and could die from a unprepared attack (eg getting shot in the head without noticing)

However, with training, most Logias learn to become their element by reflex, eliminating the ability to strike them by conventional means. Enel's ability was trained to the point that he could reflexively change form while asleep.
