@MyMrT7 OK, listen, tip: if u'r cam specs say that it supports EF/EF-S lenses than ANY EF/EF-S lens goes. And just like that for any lens. If it says that the mount is EF, only EF will go. Hope I helped...a little. :)
@MrVictorGassmann yeah man. its an EF-S lens. any of the EF lenses will work with your lens but the EF-S means its especially designed for your 1.6x crop sensor (which all Rebels have). I too have a 550D T2i, great camera!
great video. i just think that the weakness of this lens are more than the strength, because of the lack of USM and high distortion (compare to 17/15-85). The only strength is really just the zoom which i don't think it doesn't really matter if you have 18-21mp dlsr, you can still crop it and it still look amazing! anyway, it just what my experience told me. Nothing against the video or the product. Depends what you want to shoot with this lens anyway. ;)
Because of this review I ordered this Lens last week, it arrived today and boy can I say I'm impressed. My kit 18-55mm lens for my Canon 550d(Rebel Kiss x4 t2i) is now packed away and replaced by this beast.
I tested aiming the camera vertically to see if the zoom would fall, It did not, though trying to zoom in while shooting up gives ALOT of resistance (almost to the point where you think you might break it!)
What lense would you recommend for me, i like both closeup pictures and closeup from far away pictures. So a lense with both good zoom and still have the ability to take closeup pictures would be perfect for me, and i want a canon brand lense.
Can anyone tell me whats better, 18-135 or 18-200? are the 18-200 worst then the 18-135 in any way? money is no problem here, i just want to know if the upgrade from the 18-135 to the 18-200 is only positive. Thanks
im selling my canon 18 - 200is for about $450 on cleveland craiglist. To be honest its a all around beginner lens. I would rather get a couple different lenses that cover from 15mm - 300mm. so im letting mine go for cheap.
Im using canon eos 60D....i was planning to buy a telephoto lens for travelling purposes at the same time upgrade from the 18-55mm kit lens....what should i but 18-200mm, 75-300mm or 55 -200mm?
@hasyimoto An 18-200 would be great for the telezoom (200mm) and wide-angle (18mm) on the 60D. The 75-300mm and 55-250mm's wide side is too telephoto to use for travel.
hi there gordon or what your name is i am just wondering if you think that canon 400d is good for under 5000 swedish krones and with 2 objektivs with it one like this one and one 18-55 do you recomend it? well thanks and it would be nice if you answear back.
@camerlabs Im 13 now and im planning to get it with the 18-200mm lens kit. I tried it at the store and I like it a lot. Is it worth it for a 13 year old? Im planning to get it before I go on vacation, but is it worth it for the price?
@AgentJuly19903 The II on a Canon lens just means it's the second version of the lens, an updated version. The Canon 18-200mm IS is still on version I.
@laptop504 im am also buying a camera and am 14 but unless you have the money or are very picky i would would go with the EOS T2i thats what im getting. the only reason why i would get the 60d is for the video. mainly because it has the tilting screen and sound options.
@laptop504 why would a 12 year old get a 60d? that's ridiculous, i'm 15 and i got a t2i and people even think that the t2i for someone of my age is ridiculous
@laptop504 , I would recommend a 550d these are still a good DSLR in the entry level but are also a good size not to big so would suit the younger person.
Hi Gordon. I love your review. I have a question here. Do you recommend this (18-200) for a beginner? I am a newbie, planning to buy a 7D. I do not know how to choose between 18-55, 18-135 and 18-200. Which one do you think a beginner needs ? Or other ? any suggestion ? Hope to hear from you soon. Thanks a million. :)
@cameralabs Hi again Gordon, I have a question about this lens' DOF. Would I be able to shoot mid range portrait style shots indoors with a fairly tight DOF? Or do I need a lower f stop than this can produce? Thanks!
I dont really like this lens, picture quality isnt that great. I preffer using either the EF-S 17-85mm or the 17-40mm L series. Then, I probably tell my dad the let me use his 100-400mm or the 70-200mm with the 2x addon. I love wide angle lenses, I barely need to use telephoto lenses, actually the 85mm is more than enough for me with my camera's 1.6x crop factor.
Hi Gordon, congrat from Perú, Thanks for share your amazing reviews!! I can feel your passion for photography! Sorry for my bad english...
I need your help, i`m buying a Rebel T2i whit kit lens(18-55mm), but i want to make movies using the hd video funcionallity... i want to record action scenes(a lot of speed in takes)... i like the dept of field... and the question is what lens do yo consider its the apropiate for video action and speed takes??? 18-200mm, 15-85mm, other lens??? ThankS!!!
@strong6230 Probably picture quality, the 28-135 has less elements, and also makes it less probable to have less quality than the 18-200, more elements also means that the lenses (elements) can be of a lower quality, especially when you are not using an L series lens, such as the 24-105. But the 18-200mm is still a good deal because it has both telephoto and wide angle properties.

Hi Gordon, I am so new to this and checking a lot of you videos. I am considering the EOS 7D because of the features but would like to get another lens aside from the kit. But like I said, I am new to this and do not know a lot - (Willing to learn). I am planning to use this camera whenever I travel and take shots of almost anything from landscape to people to animals in the wild. I am confused with the EF and the EF-S lens. thanks in advance
@FierceRaven No problem, go to the lenses section at cameralabs . com and check out the recommended Canon lenses guide and also the lens buyers guide - all explained there.
hi Gordon! thanks for all the reviews, in past, I have bought cameras based on your reviews and so far its great. Now I am planning to get a 500D with Sigma 18-200. just a small question- do sigma and tamron lens(es) (OS) also make similar noise when focusing? I mean It could be annoying to make such noise in science conference or seminars. please help me choose between sigma and tamron.
@AZNFlipy12 You can see all the videos I've made in the video section at cameralabs . com - likewise for reviews, as I've done lots more reviews than I have videos. But no plans to do a video for the Sigma 18-200mm, sorry.
i always prefer to adjust the saturation on a igh level whenever i take landscape photographs .... especially when the landscape is green... is it right ??? pls suggest
Hi Mr. Gordon! I just want you to know that I am very much grateful for putting up this video. I'm considering on purchasing this lens for my DSLR and I know your inputs will really help me in making that decision. Keep up the good work Mr. Gordon and more power!!!
gordon, as a budget limited beginning photographer, can this lens be considered as a telephoto, and can this lens also do more stunning macro shots? thanks.
Can you please tell me if you have used a Canon 70-200 f/4 IS lens? And if so, would you recommend the lens for weddings? Please respond. thank you for any suggestions.
It's a lovely lens, very sharp. May be a bit long for weddings though unless you're taking distant shots. The 24-70mm range is more appropriate for group shots and portraits. The 17-55mm f2.8 is also really nice. Feel free to ask in the Canon section of the cameralabs forum...
The 18-200mm is a good all-rounder and ideal for travel if you don't want to carry multiple lenses - but please also ask in the Canon section of the cameralabs forum and be sure to say whether you want just one lens, and how much you have to spend.
OK a slight advert but very useful for someone who has just been on holiday with an EOS 450D and worked out they need more than the kit lens but does not want 2 lenses as it's too inconvenient
Great review! I`m in need of a travel lens and it`s come down to this and the canon 28-135mm. Loosely speaking, in your opinion does the added focal length justify the decrease in optical performance when compared to a lens of smaller focal range (i.e. 28-135mm is)
Can someone with this lens help me? I have this lens but I find that from 135mm to 200mm there is very little zoom range - the zoom hardly changes. Is this happening on your lens?
This is a common optical effect on super-zoom lenses when focusing on subjects which are quite close. You'll only notice the full zoom effect on distant subjects. Check out the '18-200mm lens problems' article in the reviews section at cameralabs . com.
Hi Gordon, thanks for the help. I can't see that article at all at Cameralabs. I have gone through the 18-200mm lens review but can't see any mention there either. Can you give a link to the article?
What does everyone think of the 18-200mm lens? I am a beginner and am thinking of buying the 50D with 18-200mm lens. I know I would like to get the ef 17-40mm but if i bought the package with 18-200 i would have a zoom and wide angle together. I just want to make sure im not wasting money on the 18-200 package on amazon. thanks...
if you find these lenses expensive the old lenses are great with an adaptor get the m42 NOT canon FD. Theyre cheap and very good quality the build is brilliant on them all metal and feel really solid. You'll lose auto focus though and will have to set the aperture manually. You can get af confirm adaptors cheap enough on ebay which opens up a whole new world of cheap lenses.
hi Gordon, wold love a review on the 70-200 2.8 is, an absolute dream in my hobby world. have been saving for ages. but I'm tempted to bye the f 4 because it is a shit load cheaper!
Hi keviiino, it's unlikely I'll be reviewing this lens for a while, but there's several owners of all versions in the cameralabs forums if you fancy asking there and checking existing threads...
NO! go with the 2.8 you'll be happy when it comes to low light situations! im going for the 70-200 2.8 IS as well, gonna be using it in arenas for basketball games and stuff!
Got this lens with my 450D and am very happy with it, something that you didn't mention (as i'm guessing you were using the peripheral illumination correction that i so dearly miss from my 450D) was that at about 190-200mm wide open, the lens will vignette. It's definitely noticeable and though, easily correctable in post it's something worth mentioning never the less.
Also, my copy of the 18-200 doesn't seem as loud as your product sample from Canon, but its no where close to USM.
Great video ! I got my answers in the first 30 seconds of it ! :) Great 'On the spot' review.

FierceRaven 1 year ago
@FierceRaven No problem, go to the lenses section at cameralabs . com and check out the recommended Canon lenses guide and also the lens buyers guide - all explained there.
cameralabs 1 year ago
@FierceRaven Don't buy a 7d.. That's a waste if youve never used a Dslr. Buy lenses with that money.

@Moffboy63 It's pretty old and precedes my reviews at cameralabs. You can see my 20D review at cameralabs . com though.

@Moffboy63 The 10d is still good, Id go for a 20d or 30d though

hi Gordon! thanks for all the reviews, in past, I have bought cameras based on your reviews and so far its great. Now I am planning to get a 500D with Sigma 18-200. just a small question- do sigma and tamron lens(es) (OS) also make similar noise when focusing? I mean It could be annoying to make such noise in science conference or seminars. please help me choose between sigma and tamron.
scienceartculture 1 year ago
do you or will you ever make a video review on the Sigma 18-200 for canon?
AZNFlipy12 1 year ago
@AZNFlipy12 You can see all the videos I've made in the video section at cameralabs . com - likewise for reviews, as I've done lots more reviews than I have videos. But no plans to do a video for the Sigma 18-200mm, sorry.
cameralabs 1 year ago
which would you choose among sigma 18-250mm, canon 18-200mm and tamron 18-270mm?

Why 29 to 320mm it is a lens for a smaller sensor right so you shouln'd have any crop??

Nice lense but cost way too much!

a couple of things i wish canon to do for the ef-s 18-200mm is:
- for god's sake ring USM so i won't ruin the gears inside
- a focus window
- better build
i wish canon could be like nikon's 18-200mm (which ken rockwell literally throws at you to buy).

Hi Mr. Gordon! I just want you to know that I am very much grateful for putting up this video. I'm considering on purchasing this lens for my DSLR and I know your inputs will really help me in making that decision. Keep up the good work Mr. Gordon and more power!!!

gordon, as a budget limited beginning photographer, can this lens be considered as a telephoto, and can this lens also do more stunning macro shots? thanks.

hi Gordon,
Just a quick question about the locking mechanism.. say if i have the lens extended to 130mm, can i use the lock to hold it in place?
s4ints 2 years ago
No, it only locks it at the shortest focal length.
cameralabs 2 years ago
ah.. that's a bummer.. would be handy if it could lock half way through to prevent the lens from sliding off.. thanks for the quick response..
am considering to get a 500D by the end of the year.. your reviews are much appreciated..

im prob going to get this lens on the new 7d

How much better is this lens compared to the standard 18-55mm?
I've found a pretty good prize for this camera with the 18-200mm lens, and it's not that much more expensive than the standard one.
Does it have any weaknesses compared to the standard lens?
Sebbe8910 2 years ago
Have a look at the results pages on my review of this lens at cameralabs . com for comparisons against the 18-55mm

Hey Gordon, Thanks so much for the reviews!
I use a canon 40D and 20D. What would you say is best for weddings? I say the 17-85 but it's quite slow, any feedback?
dougfromeagan 2 years ago
The EF-S 17-55mm f2.8 is a great wedding zoom.
cameralabs 2 years ago
use 2 camera if you can ! I for 50mm f1.4 and the other use zoom lens (such as canon 28-105L lens with Flash)

Hi Gordon, question for you. What can you tell me about the Tokina 50-135mm f/2.8 lens? Have you had the chance to use one?

Hi Gordon,
Can you please tell me if you have used a Canon 70-200 f/4 IS lens? And if so, would you recommend the lens for weddings? Please respond. thank you for any suggestions.
whoppers1000 2 years ago
It's a lovely lens, very sharp. May be a bit long for weddings though unless you're taking distant shots. The 24-70mm range is more appropriate for group shots and portraits. The 17-55mm f2.8 is also really nice. Feel free to ask in the Canon section of the cameralabs forum...
cameralabs 2 years ago
How much does that lense run for about?
TBoy205 2 years ago
There's up-to-date pricing on my review at cameralabs - just click the link in the info section to the right of the video.

hi gordon,
im new in photography . im using EOS 500D and i'm looking for a good lense.
i take photos on landscape and i travel a lot.
summerjane2318 2 years ago
The 18-200mm is a good all-rounder and ideal for travel if you don't want to carry multiple lenses - but please also ask in the Canon section of the cameralabs forum and be sure to say whether you want just one lens, and how much you have to spend.
cameralabs 2 years ago
OK a slight advert but very useful for someone who has just been on holiday with an EOS 450D and worked out they need more than the kit lens but does not want 2 lenses as it's too inconvenient
simmos56 2 years ago
Great review! I`m in need of a travel lens and it`s come down to this and the canon 28-135mm. Loosely speaking, in your opinion does the added focal length justify the decrease in optical performance when compared to a lens of smaller focal range (i.e. 28-135mm is)
kineticsoul22 2 years ago
Hello Gordon,
Great info, any chance you will review the Tamron 18-270 lens?
bryangla1 2 years ago
No chance. Tamron doesn't lend me kit to review.
cameralabs 2 years ago
Can someone with this lens help me? I have this lens but I find that from 135mm to 200mm there is very little zoom range - the zoom hardly changes. Is this happening on your lens?
Thanks
davefk 2 years ago
This is a common optical effect on super-zoom lenses when focusing on subjects which are quite close. You'll only notice the full zoom effect on distant subjects. Check out the '18-200mm lens problems' article in the reviews section at cameralabs . com.
cameralabs 2 years ago
Hi Gordon, thanks for the help. I can't see that article at all at Cameralabs. I have gone through the 18-200mm lens review but can't see any mention there either. Can you give a link to the article?
davefk 2 years ago
Click on the reviews tab, then the '18-200mm lens problems' article is on that page, on the right side.

What does everyone think of the 18-200mm lens? I am a beginner and am thinking of buying the 50D with 18-200mm lens. I know I would like to get the ef 17-40mm but if i bought the package with 18-200 i would have a zoom and wide angle together. I just want to make sure im not wasting money on the 18-200 package on amazon. thanks...

Me too! Still waiting for Canon to send a sample... there's a few owners of it on the cameralabs forums though if you'd like to ask them...
cameralabs 2 years ago
if you find these lenses expensive the old lenses are great with an adaptor get the m42 NOT canon FD.

Hey Gordon
Got this lens with my 450D and am very happy with it, something that you didn't mention (as i'm guessing you were using the peripheral illumination correction that i so dearly miss from my 450D) was that at about 190-200mm wide open, the lens will vignette. It's definitely noticeable and though, easily correctable in post it's something worth mentioning never the less.
Also, my copy of the 18-200 doesn't seem as loud as your product sample from Canon, but its no where close to USM.
