Marcus is AMAZING! Just hav a question for all the bassists on this, I'm a decent enough blues guitarist but I am considering taking up jazz bass after listening to marcus constantly!, would the skills I've aquired on the guitar easily transfer to the bass? In other words would it be like learning an instrument from scratch??
let's say so...you'll learn bass faster than other people, because it's quite similar to guitar, and you have some music theory, but bass techniques like slapping require years of developement...and then again it's like bklues guitar, it's all about feeling and phrasing, and that takes years of playing again...and then you need to have more music theory in jazz compared to blues...
so you can do it, but it'll take quite a while (several years) :-)
im a half cop bass player, playin for a few years now. some comparasons can be made, but many things like abandoning a pick, fingerstyle and slap are techniques used VERY rarely by guitar players. it will be peculiar because some of the more in depth mechanics of playing bass are different to guitar but you will have an obivious headstart on a person wiith no previous misical experience
put guitar to bass transition into context. a violin player decidind to play upright or even cello
So, have you been playing guitar for about 3 months now? lol Playing, bass is like playing drums. If you play rock, then bass would probably be easy. If you play stuff like funk, jazz and reggae, it's like starting from scratch, and would take years and years and years and years and years to master. Good luck. lol lol lol
hey man, i was in ur position bout 2 years ago. To answer ur question about switching to bass, its pretty simple theory wise because it's all basically the same with the scale form etc. But the hardest part is getting certain techniques down like the slap and pop which u cant do on a regular guitar. Give it a shot though, if ur gunna play rock, than ya, it'll b an easy change but for funk it'll use sum work. Good luck to u!
