4:32 that was at least a waza ari..judges were biased when it came to refereeing Japan vs any other nation. But I have to say that Yamamoto was the Ace card here for the Japanese team...his speed was from another dimension, and he really punched hard (unlike many today's competitors who mostly throw speedy punches with no power behind them).
japan had way better form and technique. germans had advantage in reach but slower and clumsier. sorry dieter sensei, but i think your mae geri did not reach yahara sensei.
Kagawa would have lost if the referee wouldn't have been blind. The uraken of Niklas Streit were much faster and Kagawas head was without any cover by the jab!
Hard to believe, but somewhere on that tribune there's a 17 year old guy..me. Was there for kata only, but had to fight anyway when someone on the dutch team got sick. That was my entrance in senior kumite..haha
I was there in Cairo 1983, it was a terribel competition judgement wise. This match is one of the better judged even if the judges was in favor for the Japan-team.
that's why it is hard to judge who is better in such non-contact style. i'm japanese, but if they had fought in a real combat, i'll bet german 100%. open guard, jumping step, etc... i really wonder if you can knock out with such a style. that's a touch game...
haha, it's NOT a threat to me cuz we've ever fought in k-3, which is the lower division in k-1. shotokan DOES believes in themselves although they don't prove in k-1 or something like the full contact tournament. but if you fight there, you'll recognize how you are.
when people have started fights with my instructors in the real world, not in a boxing ring it has been proven, if you read about what happens when people started fights on terry o'neil you will realise what shotokan is about.
frankly speaking, shotokan is only a logic. have you ever seen shotokan's fight in a real combat? jumping step, no low-kick, such hiki so much, etc and how do you defend yourself by that? and 1 more, shotokan is far away from karate origin okinawan style.
Is it just me or was the referee extremely indecisive? He repeatedly called the other referees up after almost every attack.

Germany far superior, another example of poor judges and bias in Jpans favour

It's quite exiting to watch the finals some 25 years later for the first time actually. Brings back some great memories.
Many thanks to Bondarev for making it available.
By the way, it was Ochi's Team, and I can assure my self's that my Mae Geri did hit Yahara.
Kindest regards, Dieter Steinegg fighter #5

his name is Kagawa, he was expelled from the JKA
duncantalome 4 years ago
Kagawa was not expelled. There was a split in the JKA with Asai sensei and Kagawa starting a new organization.

I think Imamura lost by ippon when went down on ashi-barai, so, Germany should have won by 3-2.

What a joke, Yahara cleaned up. Biased refereeing is so obvious here. Disgusting!

Yahara's block to mae-geri and lead hand counter was awesome - and the judge gave it to the German??!! But great footage.
masserby 5 years ago
Yes, that was one of the more dubious decisions, though there were a lot of dodgy one! Don't think Japan should have lost a fight there actually.
Really good match though!
