I saw Stephene in Minneapolis back in the 1980s. The man was amazing. A pinnacle of joy and love in his art. Curiously, during the intermission the younger musicians in his band went backstage, and Stephane sat down at the piano and played Mozart for 20 minutes as the crowd milled around the theater. I sat there dumbfounded with a goofy grin on my face. I will never forget it.
was django from the sama planet as me! i could live for 200years and be unable to poorly cover the great mans interpretations! and his wee bro joseph is nae slouch either.
Hi sweets, notice his left hand where he only has the use of his index and middle fingers, the others fused in a fire in his caravan when he fell asleep smoking. His brother Joseph sits behind him, the one with the wavy hair and moustache. Django is possibly the most revered guitarist who ever lived and everything was improvised, he never could read music. this is stage five in what will become your musical further education. I've allowed you four stages to fill in as you wish with SQ, LL, RayC x
Grapelli is the ONE violinist who made this music complete already! His intonation, his bluesy lines and his improvisational talent brought his instrument into attention of JASS!!!
@peaeater1- I loved Django for many years now, but I've noticed since I've been really listening to the Quintette, that Grappelli's violin is every bit as soulful as Django's guitar... Much love and respect to both of them, for bringing such beautiful music to my life...
@peaeater1 I saw Stefan Grappelli perform twice. He was a magical man CHARISMA . He was dressed impeccably as ever and just a beautiful presence! He played as well when i saw him as back in the thirties! Heartbreaking playing in the era of the heartbreaking song.
once again, the only clip that really shows Them playing with the correct soundtrack is the newsreel made in England in '39. the others are overdubbed
Note how Django only uses his index and middle fingers in all of the soloing. That was because the rest of the fingers were disabled after being burned. Pretty Awazing!
If I have two fingers of my hand surgically removed, do you think I might play as magnificently as Django does ? Because at the moment with all four on the fretboard I sound really shite !
It's all good. I'm a musician myself & have gone the last 36hrs w/o sleep due to booking for my next couple of tours. I wasn't trying to come off pissy or anything but I guess I did & apologize for that. I just think that metal guitarists in general are highly over rated. Especially when compared to Django, Les Paul & the like. I started on metal & thought I was pretty good to rip Randy Rhodes & Van Halen solos as a teen but I had no idea. Still dig metal but this is where it's at. :-)
I played in bands for years as a drummer and I played electro acoustic guitar in clubs with my wife singing for years too, for pocket money:). Music has many flavours and moods, its all about the moment, and the expression of the players heart being poured out without measure, while caught up in that moment.
Rhodes & EVH are genius players because unlike you or me they were not rip off's, they came up with all those awesome riffs. Go and re-listen to Eddie on 'Atom Punk', pure soul, pure class.
You're preaching to the choir My Friend in regard to music- it's flavors, moods & the expression involved which helps create the moment. I think Robert Plant said it best in that "musicians are all borrowers, beggars & thieves" but speak for yourself in regard to being a copy cat. I have emulated many styles from many players & perfected some of these to a T(learning the work of another is copying to a degree) but my own musical compositions & vocal stylings are as much my own as can be.
Much like the players you mentioned I allow my mixed bag of influence & technical ability to be steered by my passion & the flavor of my own style. Have a good one :-)
@jamesabilly thats how it starts though you wanna shred til your fingers bleed then you hear jazz and your idea of being good at guitar comes crashing down on you, and you realise jazz is a style that makes you good at your instrument
Not trying to start an argument but Yngwie isn't worthy of being mentioned in the same sentence as Django Reinhardt. I realize I've just contradicted myself with that last sentence but comparing someone like Yngwie who sat around for years practicing scales just so he could play them fast on a "scalloped fretboard" Fender Strat is nothing compared to the sheer, unschooled & natural, improvisational genius of Django on an acoustic guitar. Thank you SO much for posting this footage by the way!
Does anyone know what the songs being played when have the group are playing cards and the first song being played on stage are called? I have looked through cd after cd and cannot find them.
i think its just an variation of the song "jattendrai swing" which is the actaul song played after that. you can hear that the violin is pretty much the same, while the guitar is improvised a bit different.
If it isn't Django in the first clip it is an excellent impersonation because the 'stand in' is remembering that Reinhardt did not have the use of two fingers on his fret hand following a fire. What wonderful music this is - my dear old dad introduced m to it in 1952 when I was 5!!!!!
whats the name of song that they are playing?

Wow! Thanks for posting this. Great stuff. And we can see that Reinhardt did indeed use only the 2 fingers. I am in awe.
