  • Whatever she wants?

  • Judy should have got it. Plain and simple.

  • what a beauty.

  • As much as I adore Grace Kelly I think Judy should have been the one to accept it.

  • Princess Grace and Princess Diana. Forever in our hearts, angels that were sent down from heaven itself. They may be gone but their legends will live on forever.

  • awwww, she's so shy and sweet!

  • Merciful Heavens... She was a beautiful woman...

  • @itwilldecompose Judy Garland is at 8 in the ranking of the world's greatest actor. This is a fact. It 'was the most talented of Hollywood and this is recognized by all!

  • I think she is beautiful, but never a good actress.... she was just okay... but what BEAUTY!

  • for the final time she DID NOT deserve this award!!!

  • @ricardogutierrezable I agree.. she was famous for her beauty.. that was a given.. as an actress, she was nothing remarkable.. but a truly beautiful being - yes

  • well her name fits her perfectly...full of grace. We don't have any of this these days. :(

  • i love how actresses back than didnt have to get undressed or have sex to get a oscar...

  • @dboiz24 haha youre right.. Marilyn Monroe never did that ;-)

  • Interesting fact: once Grace got back stage she burst out into tears.

You can tell she's choking up while on stage.

  • @coconutgrove8 - Her parents always told her she'd never amount to anything, so i can only imagine how amazing this was for her - she really worked hard to get & to play this role - for her peers to say "you were best". When reporters called her parents for a comment, her father wanted to talk about his favorite child - Peggy.

People think Grace had an easy, charmed life, but it really wasn't. But she made the best of all things and i just love her for it. So much more than a pretty face!

  • JUDY GARLAND WAS TOTALLY ROBBED!!!!!!!

  • @Jbirdrules3818 - I absolutely disagree, and hope someday we can watch a clip of Grace's moment w/o the JG stuff. If you know the history of that time, the context, how hard it was to work with Judy (alhough she was a great talent, no question!!) ... how some people thought Judy "deserved" to win because she made a comeback? Grace earned it. I believe that hadJudy won, it would have just been a sentimental gesture. Grace did the work, showed up on time. Just my humble (but educated!) opinion. :)

  • She's the embodiment of the old Hollywood

  • @Kareragirl - The irony is that she made so few films, and wow did she not like Hollywood. People were rotten to her, she called it "A town without pity" and had it written into her contract that she be allowed to live in NYC. But she is all that is beautiful and classy and sweet about the 1950s. She was a neat lady.

  • Grace is fantastic, but I'm 100% biased: Judy Garland should have won, HANDS DOWN. No one deserved it more. What a star, and what a performance!!!!

A huge robbery! it just makes me so sad thinking about her loss!

  • @oscarlover100 And Judy was also the apparent favorite to win, and the consensus was that she WOULD win, so I assume it was a bit stunning when it was announced that Grace Kelly had won(and I agree too, that Grace Kelly was a fine actress, but Judy Garland really should have won this one).

  • The best speech ever was the one by Paul McCartney for Let It Be, he just said, thank you.

  • Judy should have won

  • @heidigirl11 - OK, that is just more than enough! Go make comments on Judy clips! Did you even sit through all of A Star is Born? I am a film historian, and it means a lot when I saw that parts of that film were just almost impossible to sit through. Have

you seen both films? Do you know how professional and decent Grace was and how the opposite of that Judy was? I'm so sick of the "She was robbed" BS. This is GRACE'S page & she darn well deserved this award.

  • @amylh322 I'm sorry, Grece was a great actress, but this Oscar was of Judy Garland! Judy was wonderful in that movie.

  • @amylh322 p.s. A star is born is considered one of the great films of Hollywood, Country Girl do not know in a few. Sure you're a film historian? Grace is the deserved Oscar, but not for this movie!

  • I would've liked to see Dorothy Dandridge win this one....

  • I was really rooting for Audrey in Sabrina.

  • @johnnypink312 - THEN WHY ARE YOU HERE?!

  • she should have said : YEAH BITCHES WHO BE YO MAMA !!! and then just walked off the stage !

  • one of the most graceful ever!

  • I love William Holden!!!!!!

  • how stupid that people are commenting on who actually deserved the award. The point is she won. Agree or disagree, Grace Kelly won. Her speech was short and humble. Not obnoxious and self absorbed like today's celebrities.

  • How the hell did this shit happen?

  • @LibranWay Payola.

  • I like Grace Kelly but this Oscar for me was of Judy Garland for a Star is born!

  • @sarakat76 ..........Audrey Hepburn for Sabrina !

  • Blacks didn't have a chance as actors back in those days. God bless dorothy dandridge for breaking that barrier. R.I.P.

  • @trickmeagain907 I read somewhere that the difference between Garland and Kelly, that year, was, literally, the closest Oscar vote that didn't end in a tie...six votes. This was revealed a few days later by Hedda Hopper, who added, "and you know who those six votes were from, don't you? Those unforgiving bastards in the MGM front office."

  • @trickmeagain907 Sometimes Oscars are awarded for greatest performance by an actor, Judy was always perfect, sometimes she made it look too easy and became overlooked,. She was fantastic in THe Clock. Grace surprised everyone with her portrayal in scenes.Judy surprised no one.

  • Judy Deserved to Win!!!

  • I still don't get how (fanatical) fans can hate a person, because that person won an award over their own "favorite". It's not like the winner decided that he/she would win the award.

  • @JPLV i totally agree with you, as i say in this cases when people insist on keep debating about the winner. I like the bible is a done deal. What is done is done.

  • Judy Garland got robbed AGAIN!

  • @gracelandtm Grace Kelly won. Period no more to tell

  • A natural beauty, with full of grace.

  • Grace Kelly was beautiful but she mistook acting for modeling. She photographed wonderfully. Her acting was stiff and calculated. The Oscar this year should have gone to Audrey Hepburn for "Sabrina".

  • @jckfmsincty the Oscar was of Judy Garland!

  • Judy Garland

  • beautiful, honest short speach :)

  • The Academy didn't want to have the best actress give her speech while laying on the floor comatose from alcohol...

  • A ESTA ALTURA DE LOS ACONTECIMIENTOS A NINGUNA DE LAS TRES ACTRICES, LE IMPORTA YA, HABER GANADO, EL OSCAR, PARA QUE NOS VAMOS HACER PROBLEMA QUIEN SE LO MERECIA O NO.

  • without doubt one of the most beautiful people to walk this earth

  • Judy was robbed!

  • Did she really need to take the purse with her? She looked nervous when she walked up, just wanted to go back to her seat. No hug or something for the guys..."Just give me the damn Oscar!" No respect. Bad speech...

    Just a damn nice dress.......

  • This always brings tears to my eyes, she is so sweet in this moment. She did not expect to win - her family always told her she was crap and wouldn't make anything of herself. But she worked hard & studied and always improved - and she won! Even so, her father only spoke of her sister "Peg" when he was asked about Grace's Oscar win. Keep that in mind as you watch, it makes it so much more meaningful!! :)

  • Nice and short like it should be

Not those 5 minute long speeches thanking everyone on earth.

  • THIS IS CRAP! LONG LIVE JUDY!

  • Were both of her and Audrey Hepburn expecting the award? They were all sittin' on the center aisle..

  • I don't dislike Grace Kelly (I liked her in Rear Window) but I don't get why people here are saying she's classy and a role model. C'mon now.

  • 17 dislikes?! How could anyone not like Grace Kelly? She has never said or done anything disagreeable and she was terrific as Georgie!

  • @9raider It's probaly because those people are upset that she won instead of Judy Garland.

  • Grace Kelly probably won because she was in several films that year, and Judy's delays on the set caused some backlash from some voters. But make no mistake, Judy's performance is considered one of the greatest put on film by most film critics, and her loss that year is most often referred as one of the biggest upsets in Oscar history. Groucho Marx said : "..the biggest robbery since brinks."

  • @davedave9103 That's right. Grace Kelly had the advantage of being in 3 very profitable films vs Judy's very expensive, very long epic. Judy had burned too many bridges and Grace was the "It girl" of the moment. And Oscar loves it when a beautiful actress plays "ugly" -- even tho Grace w/out makeup is still gorgeous!

  • @davedave9103 - Judy caused delay on EVERY SET she was ever on, while Grace was always thoughtful of others, never tardy and a dream to direct. I have viewed all of the films (you will recall that there were NOT just two women nominated for the award for '54!) and watched the performances and Grace is best. If you want to talk about Judy and her talent, go do it! But it does not need to be at the expense of Princess Grace. No wonder she called Hollywood "A town without pity"!

  • This is one of the all-time most glaring Oscar mistakes!! JUDY GARLAND deserved

to win Best Actress of ALL TIME for "A Star is Born." Grace kelly was an ingenue

and an ingrate who flew the coop and left the movies only a few months later to

marry her European Prince Charming. What a waste of a perfectly good Oscar.

  • @JOJO22858 - You clearly do not know what "ingrate" means. Grace was playing non-ingenue roles and always was mature in the roles she played. She was paired with the best leading men of the day and held her own with each - Gable, Milland, Stewart, Grant.... Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra. And they all - every last one said she was a consummate professional! Even Crosby, who objected to her being cast in this role, apologized after he saw her work. You are simply incorrect.

  • OT...but William Holden, so hot!

  • geez was she from this world...? has anyone ever had a name more fitting??

  • Grace Kelly, how classy...

  • judy. was. robbed. point blank.

  • That's a man, I remember when he came out

  • Dear God...Grace Kelly is my dream in every way. She is what should be the true role model of all young girls past, present and future. If only we could clone her. It would just simply make the world a better place. May Grace's beauty live forever!!

  • what year was this, and when did she marry the prince of monaco

  • If anyone wants to watch Judy giving her 'take' on the night she lost the Oscar to Grace Kelly, it's now right here on Youtube. It's on the TheManThatGetAway page, which is a treasure of movie and TV memories. Scroll down to you get to the "Judy garland TV shows" section.. it's clearly labelled, and not too far down the list. I bet you'll agree that the five minutes spent listening to Judy's story is worth more than all the scenes of Grace in her cardigan in Country Girl rolled together!

  • Stars were so demure back then awww :) I love Grace Kelly <3

  • Grace Kelly's performance in Country Girl was at best workmanlike, and no more oscar-worthy than Wyman in Magnificent Obsession. The oscar was, of course, just studio politics, everyone knew that at the time; what is interesting is that, judging by 12 pages of comments on this thread, the outrage hasn't died down, even 55 years later. Judy loved to tell her "night I lost the Oscar" story to her audiences, and she always told it so brilliantly that she actually emerged as the ultimate winner.

  • Judy should have won that

  • Grace Kelly is classy and beautiful, but overall an overrated actress

  • I wonder where her Oscar is now? Probably not in Monaco i would have thought.

  • @myrnaloysboy LOL! :)

  • Judy Garland had worked so hard for that award and her movie A Star Is Born was released and then after it's premiere to great raves was sent back and and ordered to be shortened. That is how Judy was robbed of her Oscar. But one must compare the two performances between Judy and Grace and only then can a conclusion be decided on who should have won that night. My opinion is and always will be Judy Garland.

  • I love how stars back then gave short quick speeches. Not like today where everyone is thanking their manager and theur glam squad and everyone else (takes at least 5 min.) and then they decide to tell some short story of how they got to be up there on that stage. I'm like oh goodness! lol!

  • @chilvari NOT so much dude, coming from someone who works in the biz, that is your moment to shine, because you may never get to be up there ever again, plus the people who "helped" you thru the years, they love it and want to hear it.

Sorry if the crowd might not care, but its always his or her moment to shine and let it be. <3

  • Now that I think of it, no wonder the Oscars nowadays are about 3 to 4 hours long. Most of the ceremony is spent on long speeches like thanking ever person on the film production.

  • @chilvari I know exactly what you mean. I was at a friends house when the 2005 Oscar's were on but I still taped it so I could watch it later that night. When I seen Hilary Swank win for Million Dollar Baby, I noticed she was up there for quite a while, then I went back and played it again while watching the timer on my vcr. She had been up there for almost four minutes. Even when they tried to cut her short with the music she still stopped them and continues then tried to stop them again

  • I've always loved Grace, but Judy should have won. The people who voted gave Grace the award because this was a different role for her. There was nothing glamorous about her playing the wife of a coutryman.

  • I think if she had won for one of Hitchcock's movies that year (DIAL M FOR MURDER and, of course, REAR WINDOW) instead for Seaton's today her Oscar victory would have been more cherished

  • If she had received the award for one of her two Hitchcok's films of that year (DIAL M FOR MURDER or,even better, REAR WINDOW) instead for Seaton's I think her victory would have been more cherished

  • If she had received the award for one of his two Hitchcok's films of that year (DIAL M FOR MURDER or,even better, REAR WINDOW) instead for Seaton's I think her victory would have been more cherished

  • Grace is perfect! Loved she very much.

  • It was said that those in attendance of the Oscars left upon seeing Grace go on stage and Judy who was sick in the hospital at the time said " And no one said goodbye"

  • @EdTV20 Judy had just had a baby boy that night

  • Judy should have won. But what people don't know is that Grace slept with almost everybody at the Warner Bros. Studio that year in order to get the votes, and that's why she won. It had nothing to do with talent or with Grace's performance which I'm sure was good. She campaigned for it and she won unfairly. So the woman deserves spite for taking it from someone who earned it.

  • @xander7ful Put away the pink gloves and woman's panties and put your bitchiness under the rug.

  • Grace Kelly was a great movie star I love watching her but putting your hair up, not wearing make-up and wearing dowdy clothes is not acting. Uta Hagen won the Tony for the original stage production of The country girl and Hagen also originated the role of Martha in Whos afraid of Virginia Woolfe which of course gave E.Taylor her 2nd Oscar, if Uta hadnt been blacklisted I wonder if she would have had these roles.

  • Even then she looked like a princess. Did you know that the Oscar was named by Bette Davis. She said that the award's butt looked like her husband or boyfriend Oscars butt. Thats acording to her book. Bette Davis 'The Girl Who Walked Home Alone'

  • @Jeannekm126 Grace hates you.

  • Did you know that Judy wasn't in attendance at the ceremony and if she had won then Lauren Bacall would have accepted the award on her behalf. Apparently they lived close to each other in New York and were friends.

  • @thanth11 Judy was in the hospital had given birth to her son Joe

  • Well I'M glad she won she BROKE MY HEART in that movie! Elizabeth won because she nearly died and Grace won because she had WORKED HER BOTTOM OFF that year. Hollyweird has ALWAYS run on politics and non-acting merit, and from what I see of it today, always will. We must learn to deal with it. I mean, it's like ppl who say Reese W won because everyone saw her divorce from Ryan Phillipe coming even though they were all smiles at the ceremony...

  • judy garland should've won instead of that gold digging grace kelly!

  • We all know Dorothy Dandridge was the real winner. But in 1954 no Black Actress was winning anything.. definitely not a Best Actress Academy Award.

  • Grace Kelly, FORGOTTEN? Are you kidding. She remains one of the most beautiful and best actresses from Hollywood. Even if she didn't deserve her Oscar, that was still her YEAR. That same year was also starred in oscar worthy stuff, Dial M for Murder, and Rear Window.

  • "Princess Grace, "Payton Place," trouble in the Suez!"

  • No one watches the Country Girl today whereas A Star is Born is must see for any film fan. Grace Kelly is pretty much forgotten as an entertainer. She's known mostly for allowing her child to drive when she should have.

  • @spagandtuna Forgotten? The Grace Kelly look is still very popular. Just look at Kate Winslet at the oscars two years ago. Her collaborations with Hitchcock has stood the test of time and are iconic (more than A Star is Born) And I can assure you that not many people know that Grace died in a car accident, but what is certain is the fact that Judy Garland is mostly associated with being a DRUG ADDICTED DRUNK who died on the floor of a hotel room.

  • According to Pluto... mickey or Donald should have won!

  • ? hollywood is a mystery

  • Judy Garland should have won!

    Davidx

  • @itwilldecompose Yu seriously need to shut up! Judy Garland was one of the greatest actress of all time, she was more than an actress, she was a legend!

  • Grace Kelly was so wonderful! One of the most beautiful and talented actresses of all hollywood. Lovely video!

  • I really do not see the fascination with Judy Garland in A Star is Born. It was a musical - not far from anything shes used to doing. I LOVED Grace Kelly in The Country Girl. I thought that she gave her character the the blandness it required. A very subtle, yet stand out performance. Judy Garland on the other hand, took the word OVERACTED to a whole other dimension. I cringed every time she had to push herself to convey emotion.

  • Dorothy should have won

  • Judy was robbed! I love Grace to no end, but Judy gave the performance of a lifetime in "A Star is Born."

  • Very nice!

  • Grace Kelly was fantastic, but Judy Garland should have won. Incredible performance! "The man that got away" is Oscar-worthy alone!

  • the most beautiful woman of all time!! ohh grace...

yes, judy is great but the country girl role is more intense,i love the two movies but the country girl is beter.

  • That Oscar belongs to Dorothy Dandridge. She was unbelievable in Carmen Jones. Judy Garland was great also, but I thing Dorthy was better.

  • @hayria123 yes, the Oscar should've gone either to Dorothy or Judy, but Grace? I have nothing against her, but she never really was Oscar worthy.

  • @danielags16

I agree. Grace Kelly was more a great looker than a great actress. A fine actress she still was, but her beauty and wealth alone landed her roles she otherwise wouldn't have gotten. Her winning the Oscar seemed more like a popular vote than anything.

  • grace kelly is beautiful

but this was the judy garland oscar

  • She stole the oscar from Judy Garland!!!!!!! 'A Star Is Born' deserved the award much more than Grace's film.

  • Coincidentally (perhaps ironically?), Grace Kelly's acceptance speech is very similar to that of Vicki Lester (the character Garland plays) in "A Star is Born" before Norman interrupts her.

  • Comment removed

  • dorothy dandrige all the way.RIP grace kelly

  • X2 I agree..:)

  • This is considered one of the biggest Oscar robberies in the history of the Academy.

I don't think it's too horrible, at least she had a juvenile Oscar for her work in The Wizard of Oz and Babes in Arms.

  • Grace Kelly is beautiful and lovely, but Judy should have won. IMHO Judy was magnificent in A Star is Born and one of the greatest entertainers ever. The word "legend" is overused, but it fits Judy.

  • Grace Kelly was a wonderful actress. Judy Garland was also wonderful, but why all the spite against Grace Kelly? She was excellent in A Country Girl and was justly awarded.

  • @MsVera9 I agree, but probly because Judy deserved it a little more (she was better at acting- not that Grace wasn;t, but she was just too cool whereas Judy was good at passion and such), plus it wasn't Judy's fault she couldn't arrived- she had given birth to her son that night.

but that's just my two cents. some are probly just angry because they love Judy more due to her memorable role as Dorothy. Or jealousy at how pretty she looked, who knows!

  • @MsVera9

I think Grace Kelly was a wonderfull actress, but certainly not the best ou there. She got a real presence over her and she just filled the screen. Also, there was real chemistry between her and her male co-star. Was she a golddigger? No, but she wanted despreately to hae succes to please her father. If you read her biografie by Donal Spoto you learn why she acted the way she did. Despite being born in a welthy family, she had a difficult and lonely childhood. She's very interesting.

  • @MsVera9 If she had received the award for one of her two Hitchcok's films of that year (DIAL M FOR MURDER or,even better, REAR WINDOW) instead for Seaton's I think her victory would have been more cherished

  • @MsVera9 Garland was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress and, in the run-up to the 27th Academy Awards, was generally expected to be the winner. She could not attend the ceremony because she had just given birth to her son, Joseph Luft, so a television crew was in Garland's hospital room with cameras and wires to televise Garland's anticipated acceptance speech.

  • la mujer más elegante y sofisticada de la historia del cine (y hermosa por supuesto)..Grace Kelly ♥

  • That Oscar should have went to Judy Garland. It will always belong to her. Grace Kelly Couldn't even act. I agree she was very beautiful, but that is all. Judy was completely ripped off. Thank God Her Daughter won for Cabaret. I guess that was a win for Judy as well. Watch Grace in the Country Girl, Then watch Judy in A Star Is Born. Graces performance does not even come close to being as good. R.I.P Judy I Love you!!!!!

  • @screenwriter89

Grace Kelly was a fine actress, but her stunning beauty and class made too many people rate her higher than she deserved. They were blinded by her beauty and took her to their hearts. Many directors have admitted that they cast some actresses mostly because of their beauty. Grace Kelly was beautiful and rich, so nothing could stop her. Anyway, Judy Garland's performance in A Star is Born was stellar.

  • @McLarenMercedes agreed. While I dont think many well-awarded stars today are particuarly beautiful as the classics were, that seems to be the same reason today's stars get undeserved and unecessary awards- looks (and yes, sometimes money).

  • Yes. She's astonished and lovely, anyway. have you seen her lovely party dress??

  • Kelly was beautiful and graceful. But, she wasn't much of an actress. She was best known for her chilly persona. Unfortunately, her performances were wooden. Basically, she was boring. The Oscar this year should have gone to Judy Garland or Audrey Hepburn.

  • "And all my costars I screwed" Thank you.

  • Like Judy.

  • Judy was ripped off that year. 6 votes short. Judy Got the Last laugh. She not only recieved something more precious than a statuette, she had a new born a Son. Judy also went on to be the great entertainer of the 20th Century. Grace was an ok actress but Garland deserved it if not for A Star id Born, but for her Contribution to the World of entertainment. At this point in her life she achieved more than most of her Peers had. It's talked about to this day how she was robbed of this award.

  • She had NBC send a film crew to the hospital room where she was recuperating after giving birth to Joey in order to give her acceptance speech live if she won. I wonder who pushed for that?...

Judy was not THE great entertainer of the 20th Century, that is hyperbole. As for her Oscar loss? Get over it...

  • That was Judy's oscar. Today nobody remembers The Country Girl, yet A Star is Born is still acclaimed by public and critics.

  • What a stone cold beauty. her wedding photos are amazing.

now you have some meanfaced, clipped-haired biotch in charge of homeland security...

    Calgon!, take me away...

  • Thank you so much for uploading this clip! I have been looking for it for years. It's great!

  • One of the most undeserved oscar of all time.

  • whata little theater they had it in....how did she beat Judy and Dotty?

  • The very same day of the Oscar ceremony, Judy Garland had her son Joey: March 30, 1954.

  • I'd love to hear how she talked before she attended acting school and changed her voice...can you really imagine Grace Kelly speaking with a Phildadelphia accent???.

  • Judy was apparently very angry over Grace winning over her. Because Judy was the odds on favorite to win.

    But I love them both.

  • I like Grace Kelly quite a bit too - but Judy's performance was a knockout, career-best stunner. How could she not win? It still kills me.
