UGH. I got one of these as my first apple computer ever. Not a tech guru at all and trying to update it is a pain in the ass. I really don't want to buy $200 leopard for a $100 computer.
@linuxboygenius What a gift :) I would've snatched it in a heartbeat. I have since sold the this Mini about a month ago on ebay. Still got $180 for it & thats something I couldn't of managed doing with a 2005 Windows PC LMAO. It's a great collectors item..
@KayakServer Well, My Mac Mini Originally came with Panther so yeah. But I dont recommend that OS. Tiger is a more compatibile OS to newer software, devices, & internet plug-ins
I mave an IMac power pc g5..... Can I upgrade it to anything higher than Osx 10.5???? They say it's for intel only, but I've seen videos of people with it on their Macs. I wan to do the same. How do I do that!!!!!!!!?
@kyuubimon 10.5 Leopard is all you can go with a G5 .... All you can do from there is keep up to date with your software updates & installed software to keep it purring :P I'm not aware of running 10.6 Snow Leopard on PPC MAcs.
Intel Core Duo can only take you to 10.6 Snow Leopard
Intel Core 2 Duo is Compatibile with the Latest 10.7 Lion OS
So if you plan on any Future Mac Desktops, Go for Core 2 Duo or Higher as of now.
Well, it will surf fine but you cant update to the latast Flash Plug In which sucks. Tho HTML5 will works like flying colors. And no, 10.5 Leopard is as high as you can go with a G4 & the last G5...
10.6 Snow Leopard & 10.7 Lion is Intel Only ( Core 2 Duo & better )
sure, if the min spec is an 867Mhz G4, then you're good to go, just make sure u have enough ram. I think in yo G4 Mini your max is 1GB just like mine. I could be mistaking & it might take more as apple secretly bumped up the specs in the last G4 refresh of the Mini
Nope, it was Early 2005 & I never thought I would need Wi/Fi then. 1st few months I was still on Dial-Up. Then by the end of 05 we got DSL. At that time I bought my iBook G4 & soon realized I needed an Airport base station. For a few months I had it connected via ethernet. Then I purchased a USB Wireless Adapter ( Asus WL-167g ) for wireless networking. Also got the USB Bluetooth adapter which is The size of a toe nail for 99 cents & it works perfectly too.
@SuperTecFreak Leopard is a tad slower as its a more intense OS. Uses up more RAM but I preferred it as one can easily screen share & file share with it to other Macs with a newer OS...
Tiger is the real sweet spot when it came to speed.
Well theres your problem. U just said u only have the Tiger Disk. How will you ever install Leopard if u don't have Leopard Installation disk?
I just bout the Family Pack at the time which lets me install on 3 Macs. Installed on My Mac Mini 1.25Ghz G4 with 1GB Ram, 12" iBook G4 1.2Ghz with 768MB Ram, and my 17" iMac Core 2 Duo 2 Ghz with 3GB Ram without a single problem.
You should not have a problem at all with your specs. Heck, Leopard works with 867Mhz G4 with 512MB Ram.
I'd imagine it speeding up. On this which has USB2 & FW400, thru FW400 which will transmit faster than the internal spinning at 4200RPM and the external at 7200.
I did it once on an older External Drive I had and while it was faster, the drive was just noisy. But since I ended up getting the iMac in 06, haven't used the Mini much at all since.
You'll be happier with the Intel C2D Version. G4 will be too slow at doing anything intense and support for the PPC is dropping like a brick. Most new apps don't even support it.
The G4 only serves well for the most basic needs. It doesn't even do too well with youtube videos anymore. Though using the HTML5 Beta it plays vids fine but at lowest quality.
NONE WHAT SO EVER. I upgraded the ram myself to the 1GB limit shortly after I got it back in 2005. It was on back order for almost 2 months. They invoiced on April 15th, just shy of the Tiger Intro. Since it came with Panther and Tiger was introduced, I was lucky to get the $14.95 Tiger Upgrade DVD. I was borderline 4 not qualifying.
Use a Asus WL-167g for Wireless and a 99cent bluetooth dongle which all works. I may swap out for a 5400 or 7200 HD as 4200RPM is too slow
You can speed up your mac mini to 1,5 Ghz easily. It will perform better than on 1,25. Just look this up on the internet... you just have to remove a few very little components on the motherboard, and it will run on 1,5 Ghz. I've done it to mine, and it runs great, you don't have to worry about it.
I aware of that mod. I was temted to do it myself before Apple Intoduced the Core 2 Duo's in Late 2006. But since my main system is my iMac Core 2 Duo, I'll leave the Mini alone. Whether I do over-clock, it still will not compare. I just use it as a backup which I control wirelessly via AirPort Extreme.
Well, you got the point. I didnt know you have another mac... I bought a mac mini core solo, and i will upgrade it to a core 2 duo. Because those have swappable processors. So an early 2006 core solo mac mini can be upgraded to be equal to a mid-2007 mac mini. Because the only difference is the processor, and its a lot cheaper to buy a core2duo into a core solo mini, then a mid-2007 mac. Thats a really cheap way to get a C2D mac :)
Apple sometimes puts up decent prices on their refurb macs. I see 2Ghz C2D Minis with 120 or 160GB HDD for $479 on there . And the 2.53GHZ Minis with the 320GB HDD and 4GB Ram at $649. They really go quick. No longer than 2-3 days. Think of it, Most Core Solos had base specs. Most of which needed HDD, Ram, Processor, & OS upgrades. Back then it was worth it, and for those who still have a Solo, it still is. But to buy 1 now to do all that, I don't think it worth it.
@pokeeto2 What kind of mouse is that? Does it blink with the HDD access? I do have a couple that look like the same, however they don't show the same behaviour. It would be nice to have some kind of HDD access warn in the mini. Sometimes we can't know what's happening.
It' a POS Cheapo No name mouse I can on ebay years ago for like $3. Very plasticky all around. It works but I went out and got a regular Fullsize Logitech Black Optical mouse at walmart for $7 after a few weeks. Have had the logitech for 3 years & it's what I still use.
hey, Im running 10.5.8 on a 1.25ghz G4 Imac with 2gb ram. It actually runs pretty damn well! I have a unibody white macbook but decided to buy the imac g4 to have a desktop unit.....couldnt afford another NEW apple.
I know someone who still uses 10.3.9 Panther. But this Mini was faster with 10.4 Tiger. But Leopards lets me control it remotely and screen-sharing which is how I use it.
But this is nothing compared to the rest of the Windows users who still use an OS thats been around since 2001. (XP)... Here and there, you will still see computers running Windows 9x systems like Windows Me. Now thats obsolete.
