awesome!!! Tony Banks is without a shadow of a doubt, one the most talented and creative keyboard players and the driving force behind Genesis. This solo album contains some of the most awe inspiring tunes ever featured on any record. Too bad it was so overlooked by the music industry.
Multiple movements expressing wide range of positive emotion: Introspective at the beginning, joyously energetic starting at 2:55, climatic and mysterious at 3:30, profound at 3:50, pausing to reflect at 4:19... Although I have always admired Banks as a master of melancholy, this shows a side of him that is not often seen. This song is the pinnacle of the album's story before the main character's gradual return to amnesia begins
Tony Banks es el mas talentoso y mejor tecladista-compositor del rock sinfónico. Guardo una enorme admiración por este hombre, sobre todo por su enorme aporte a Genesis.
Tony Banks is the most talented and best keyboardist-composer of symphonic rock. I keep a huge admiration for this guy, especially for their enormous contribution to Genesis.
Genesis is one of the very few bands in the history of recorded music that seemed to be like a breeding ground for musical genius. Every one that has ever been a member has gone forth to produce a highly successful solo career or side projects.
Here's an interesting fact that i've yet to see mentioned.Tony plays every instrument on this album, except lead vocals and drums. That includes all keys, guitars, bass, backing vocals, and percussion. A talented englishmen indeed! Word is, he and Chester Thompson had quite a time throw'n back a few during these sessions.
One of Tony's finest moments in this song. Put elements of Supper's Ready, Inside and Out, Cinema Show, stir them in a pot, and you've got this song. Such great use of harmony in the introduction, and what a killer synth solo! I think it is one of his best pieces, what a beautiful and unique love song. Too bad you can't really hear the chords in the synth solo with the audio quality of this video. Still, I love this piece. :)
It only takes a couple of listens to this song and you realise that Tony Banks formed the definitive Genesis sound and the songwriting method - A beautiful thoughtful lyrical introduction leading up to an evolving virtuouso technical instrumental masterpiece that has you on the edge of you seat - encompasing breathtaking melodic lines with a huge classical influence mixed with prog rock - I just gotta say it - Tony Banks was Genesis - without him we would have had just another good rock band -
This may not be as good as early Genesis, but it's better than a lot of newer Genesis. I definitely hear many Banks-isms in the chord progressions and instrumentation here.
Such a great composer and I bought this album when it came out. However it rarely gets played as often as my Genesis material as I find it profoundly melancholy. I have to be really 'up' to listen.
@ acoronab, you are not the first one who suggested Tony should have sag the song by himself but as far as I remember from some of his interviews, Tony just thought the opposite. By the way, a curios feeling was always my fevered album and I would never sell it, not even for a million. It's realy a shame that it didn't get the attention by other people except those who also loved his contribution at Genesis.
IMO the finest "concept album" ever produced. The premise is that you can have love or intellect, but not both. Anyone know what Kim Beacon (the vocalist) did before or since?
Sadly, Kim died about five years ago. His recorded legacy doesn't really do justice to his talent, which was substantial. You can hear a glimpse of his potential on his first solo album, 'Ravenna', but it's hard to find now. Although he was English, he worked with a couple of Scottish bands (Northwind and String Driven Thing) in the 70s. He also did some sessions for Thin Lizzy and Runrig but I don't know if there are any recordings of that work.
I guess when I picked up this album in '82,I was expecting a classic old Genesis sound, coming after the fallout from "Duke"(though this was released a year earlier)I did not like this at first;but it quickly grew after repeated listening to become my favorite of ALL releases, band & solos.Which is saying a lot. That's simply my own taste though.
very genesis, great.

The song is actually about a character (Alice) in the book Flowers For Algernon by Daniel Keyes.
In fact the whole of this album is very loosely based on this book... Truly great album!
