  • Love this

  • I really love this ad!!!

  • LOL... "great video. Probably directed by Scorsese." *Scrolls to top* "Knew It."

  • My all time favorite commercial. Its so beautiful and touching.

I watched it for 1st time when I was a little kid and my dream was to go t NYC to work.

    I was obsessed with NY.

    Great music too

  • Does anyone know what this song is called? I know it is Philip Glass but it's not in either "The Hours" or "The Illusionist" scores. It's also not P.G.'s String Quartet No. 3, nor is it Symphony No. 7 "Toltec." These have been some suggestions posted. I believe it may have been composed specifically for the commercial, but I'm hoping to be proven wrong. Any ideas?

  • @PaigeCasey sure, it's Philip Glass' "Mishima: "1957: Award Montage"" off of his classical album "Complete String Quartets: The Smith Quartet"

  • deniro always looks like a bum

  • STAY AWAY FROM AMERICAN EXPRESS

  • I have just listened to THE ILLUSIONIST soundtrack, and think that the tracks The Orange Tree, The Sword, and Sophie are the ones closest to the theme used in the Amex commercial. Still, I would like to have a recording of the exact music used in the commercial.

Also, do you know that when DeNiro talks about "his private side", the images are of paintings done by his father, the very fine Abstract Expressionist painter Robert DeNiro, Sr.?

  • Robert De Niro is much better than Michael Caine is

  • Robert De Niro made it way past the finish line.. He did a brilliant performance in Everybody's Fine.. and it was an awesome to watch him get honored at the Kennedy Awards last night

  • That's nice.

  • does anybody know what in the world this mreldude is talking about because Robert De Niro is still the greatest actor ever i have no idea what poor decision or whatever ur talking about is

  • mreldude is saying that this Amex endorsement was a mistake

  • @people-who-wanted-this-music: I am very certain it's the soundtrack to "The Illusionist," and if it is not, it is almost certainly by the same composer.

  • Same composer, absolutely-- but not the same piece. You're thinking about "The Chase," from "The Illusionist."

  • i need this music!

  • pretty sure its also been used on the soundtrack to the movie "The Hours"

  • wats it called tho

  • Everybody check out Robert de Niro music video by denirezler

  • Thats it. I'm getting American Express.

  • absolutley stunningly beautiful.... credit car ad.

how many things can you say that about, eh?

  • someone has deleted all the film collection that you have sent me... :(

  • every time I see this commercial, I wonder, I'm not brave enough to choose what they really?

  • sublime.

  • That sounds like Philip Glass, too!

    What an ad!

  • It is Philip Glass, I'm looking for the exact name of the soundtrack, but so far nothing.

  • This is the score composed by Philip Glass for the 2002 film "The Hours"

  • Are you certain? It has some similar elements, but sounds more like a variation on "The Chase" from the movie "The Illusionist," which he also composed.

  • I'm certain. I've listened to the score for The Hours many a time

  • I've listened to the score for "The Hours" and I didn't here this [musical [selection]] anywhere.

  • I can't believe you don't recognize the music in the score to this one here. It's so obvious it's from The Hours.

  • I work for American Express. I know the company recruits the best to make these comercials. This one is great. Robert DeNiro did a lot to bring the Tribeca area back after September 11

  • Deniro founded Tribeca to bring art, culture and life to NY. It was the answer to the after 9-11 in order to give life again to a sunk NY.

  • what is the name of this backmusic?

  • so hauntingly beautiful!!! it gives me goose bumps everytime I watch it. pure genious!! love Deniro and Scorcese and the tribute to the greatest city on this planet..

  • WOW very artistic and creative i love robert de niro & martin scoresese De niro:MY life happens hear my card is american express

  • Such a beautiful commercial. I had a feeling it would be directed by Scorsese.

  • i am de niro after amex commercials.

  • i remember seeing this years ago..i cant believe i didnt notice it was deniro

  • people on the internet suck

  • That would have been so beautiful, if it hadn't been spoiled by commercialism in the last few seconds. Would've made a great short film beginning.

  • The greatest ad i have ever seen ! love deniro

  • The background music to the commercial is "Toltec Symphony" It haunted me and I had to hunt it down!

  • I love this!!! What is the song name?

  • Phillip glass string quartet # 3

  • hes so handsome

  • Bravo DeNiro! ;)

    My heart breaks too!

  • Me encanta mi American Express...

  • Deniro is the BEST!!!

  • They had to shell out some CHEEZ to get him to do that commercial (since he would never put up with AmEx not being accepted in half the places you'd want to buy something).

  • Wow--when did DeNiro get OLD? I was so in love with him when I was 12 (ca. "Taxi Driver")

  • One of the best commercials. On par with all the ESPN ones.

  • i remember seeing this for the first time and thinking that it was a trailer or at the very least a mini series rather than a credit card commercial

  • This is a beautiful commercial..If Mr. DeNiro's words were read by any New Yorker, the same images would ring true..It is me in the heartbreak image..I was finally visiting the site for my first time and I was standing there for what seemed to be very long and very empty..when I turned around I apologized to the photographer for holding up his shot..we nodded to eachother..and I left..this picture captures what I felt and feel about being there...

  • @bklynbonnie2 is it really you? thank you for being in the shot-- it's where all we locals were in our hearts, during the days of the pyre, the pile, the hole.

i seem to remember a version of this were he refers to his 'North Star' as the shot pans across the hole--or perhaps that is just my own memory.

  • Didn't Martin Scorsese direct this commercial?

  • De Niro is a pure G !!!

  • This is a beautiful commercial. If it was a movie, it would be my favorite.

  • I actually anticipated this commercial whenever there was a break in a tv show, and I was happy when they played this one. It's fucking brilliant.

  • Yeah, this video is depressing. I almost wanna cry. But you gotta love Bob. Everybody loves Bob.

  • @bigantho1 its an ad for american express.. and you want to cry? FAG

  • @IMATROLLIN69 hahahahaha

  • @bigantho1 depressing? why?

as a lifelong NYer in exile for the last year, i still find this viddy to capture so much of what makes NYC the place that it is.

and yes, :41 is a moment in NYC's life that will always be part of its history going forward.

  • DeNiro is pure class.

  • I remember when I first saw this. Much better than your average commercial. Deniro gives it weight.

  • mm i love how he expresses the raw side of new york, none of that 5th ave glitz n glam

  • bobby i just want too let you know, im still around i will give that big fucking ego some time.

  • new york !!!!!!!!!!!! my city !!!!!!!!!!

  • i STILL love robert de niro..

  • Hmmmm.....this commercial is too dark and depressing!I mean...it doesn't really make you go out and get an Amex card!

  • i like robert deniro. maybe not a good choise for him to do this advert. Hes good with Joe Pesci though :D

  • if you were paid 2 million dollars for talking for one minute, i think you would do it

  • The Name of the song is Phillip glass stringer quartet #3

  • by far my favorite commercial...

  • it's actually an original work by Philip Glass

  • Really? Are you sure it's not from The Hours?

  • does anybody knows the name of this song !!!???

    c´mon

  • i can tell it's by philip glass, but i cant find the name of the piece

  • i want to know the song or melody of this commercial, please tellme!!

  • robert de niro, al pacino, marlon brando, johnny depp = untouchable!!

  • untouchable(s)

  • russell crowe thats the stupidest fucking thing ive ever heard

jOEY THE WEE is a fuckin mook

  • If you wait long enough all your heros will let you down

  • what do u mean ?

  • i mean it is repugnant that deniro would abuse his art for shameless corporitism, and a shame that its is so acceptable now for stars to foist shit on the masses for a paycheck (that never covers the cost to their soul)

  • you should prob look up the tribeca film festival, why it was started, who with and what the partnership meant to NYC. would rather this more prosaic approach than a loud boorish in your face commercial.

  • yeah i heard he needed alot of money for that and for lots of things in his neighbourhood, but to quote from a Scorsesse film "you can't change the world just where your comming at it from" commercials pay a ton and the reason is that you can never buy back what it takes from you

  • robert de niro is a brilliant actor. my faveourite by far.

  • de niro is twice as good as crowe

  • de niro is twice as good as crowe

  • Crowe a better actor than Bobby?

    Now,this is laughable.

  • does anybody know who the director of productions is for this video??

  • i think scorsese made it

  • wonderful!!!

  • Thanks rockinroller

  • Though its a commerical. It is avant garde art. The mixture of Robert DeNiro, directing by Martin Scorese, and music by Philip Grass make this a memorable piece. Though it is promoting Amex, you can still apreciate it as a short film.

  • philip gLass ;)

  • are you sure it was directed by MARTIN SCORSESE?

  • u cant tell whats martin scorcese's work?

  • you an idiot, i know more about Scorsese than you'll ever know. I was just asking a question you mutt.

  • How is he a sellout? I don't get it. He's a wonder - one of our greatest actors!

  • piss off u commie! Always complaining about everything!

  • the music is essential

  • can someone tell me a better advert?

  • Who said DeNiro got a cent for this commercial?

From seeing him in so many movies, he may have written the script.

And as for New York, it's his home town, and I believe he loves it there.

Which takes us back to getting paid.

With all he has, why would he want a cent to say all the heart felt things he says about the city he loves.

Actors are "People," too ya know?

  • Reply to 'rockinroller7'

Weyhey ... hold on a sec. This is not about 'New York' nor what He thinks about it! This is about advertising "American Express"!

All Companies try to get a real popular celeb to promote their product, because it draws people's attention, and subsequently new customers !

Yes, actors are people too, but don't think for one minute that he wasn't paid for it!

  • 123-

    Point taken.

I know better than to, "Argue," with you.

    I'll be in touch.

  • DeNiro and AMEX have a long-lasting partnership as they both worked on rebuilding lower Manhattan after 9-11 through creating Tribeca Film Festival (AMEX is founding sponsor and headquartered adjacent to the former World Trade Center site). Unlike many celebrity shills this is an example of a partnership where DeNiro can leverage AMEX's advertising power to promote the Tribeca Film Festival and creating art via a short film vs loud tacky commercial to support the cause

  • I was aware of Tribeca, and without stating so previously, the only explanation there would be for DeNiro takin a "Fee," for the commercial, would be to put the money back into the city, he has spoken of Loving.

BUT FOR SINGULAR PURPOSES HERE, THANKS FOR CLARIFICATION WITH REGARDS TO THE CIRCULAR "TIE-IN," BETWEEN ALL THOSE INVOLVED.

Now, if we could just get our government to work the same way, for the good of our country, what a wonderful world, ours would be.

    Thanks again.

    Take care.

  • Can I just say that I am really happy that the music is Philip Glass. Made this video that much more amazing.

  • He aint no sell-out. He's been stereotyped through his aggreesive characters in his early career. Now he wants to dabble in comedy in bit-parts, thats fine!! When you have a resume like his then you don't need to prove youself. Form is temporary - class is permanent

  • damn right class is permanent Check out Taxi Driver Tribute in my videos in my account. Imagine if travis bickle's reflection actually fights back!

  • 13eon,

    Bloody well put!

As I wrote above, I believe he used his "Form," as you stated, to "Sell," the love he has for his home town.

  • So many commercials, but a few stick in my mind. This is one of them. Good stuff.

  • simple great!!!!!!!

  • this is my card...

  • This commercial is classic. Friggin good. DeNiro is the best.

  • i love how when people make it good, and do some commissoned work, people automatically assume them to be sell-outs..its a job, what was the goal of the job?, to get people persuaded into buying American Express. tell me, did they persuade? im sure they fucking did their job well. a job that doesnt entail pleasing hating motherfuckers like all of the YouTube community.

  • It's all about money, hey maybe you are a better actor than him, but no one wants to see your "not sold out acting"

  • sad but true, well said my friend

  • lil bit?

  • even in comercials he's great, robert de niro is the best fuckin' actor on the planet, followed by al pacino an jack nicholson those 3 are the greatest.

  • That surely isn't Philip Glass, is it?

  • sounds like philip glass

  • thats my boy DeNiro awesome

  • great!!!

  • love it amazing

  • Impossibly gorgeous.

  • I thought this was shot by Annie Leibovitz, no?

  • annie leibovitz is a photographer if I´m not wrong.

  • This is directed by Martin Scorsese!!!

    That's for sure!

  • My heartbreak. So touching and real. Love DeNiro!

  • my fave part is when hes walking at 50 seconds and the away it fades it out very nice and he is so handsome

  • awesome, beautiful

  • howdid they get those guys? shaymalan, wes anderson, de niro,scorsese...

  • love this ad, it's magical!

    Bobby is so cute. ^_^

  • ahhh, new york is new york, another planet, far from everything else!

  • his voice, his words, his face, he is deniro! the music score is phillip glass, "mishima" i think, the opening, but it is not the same as the commercial.

  • good fellas is better

  • Yes acually.

  • Have you seen "Gangs of New York"? That movie was made by Scorsese and is so bad that I can't even put it into words. That's not to say that he doesn't make good movies on occasion, but he's not a consistent genius the way you seem to believe.

  • it's all because dicaprio sucks nothing compared to de niro no matter what age he is

  • The first time I watch this commercial I fell in love by it and I could not believe that even a commercial made by martin scorcese can be that good he is amazing the perfect convination Scorcese and Deniro.

  • The Greatest actor who ever lived

  • home the movie . com

    another love letter

  • the music is Philip Glass - Stringer Quartet No.3 (Mishima) 1957

  • The music is an original Philip Glass composition, done exclusively for the spot. See the PG documentary film for a note on that.

  • I hate commercials, but when you put Marty, Bobby, and the Big Apple on the screen together it's absolute magic.

  • Robert Deniro is amazing no matter what he does.

I have to be in film with him, so I can be complete.

    Love ya Bobby,

    Jackie Nova

  • Great ad. Deniro is the greatest. An American treasure.

  • This is lovely.

  • It's beautiful.

  • Amazing, beautiful!!! >)

  • ugh, just gorgeous. it makes me love new york even more.

  • tell me guys what's this song played in this commercial called?

  • Yeah, but even if you don't understand why it's manipulative and overly sentimental, it's still an ad, and that's the point.

  • This is sad, makes me cringe. I feel really sorry for this fallen hero of cinema (Deniro). Reduced to tacky, shameful corporate shilling.

  • ha how is he a "fallen" hero of cinema??? and this may be the least tacky ad I've ever seen

  • omg gives me goosebumps too
