@totoroben: A little experience on the bike led me to adopt toe clips. A little more led me to adopt clipless pedals. Years and years of experience on the bike led me to put those things away and ride with feet in good comfortable shoes on big flat pedals. For those of us with normal cardiovascular capacity, pedal to shoe attachments do not offer us better performance. They are just a crutch to make poor pedaling look the same as good pedaling.
That dude is definitely old school. If your using a separate pair of shoes for hiking and are putting in that high of milage, you might as well get some clipless pedals and shoes.
