He deadens the uva strings so that only the string he wants makes a sound. i have learnt how to do it, but it is very hard. try it at home. put your fingers ova all the strings and on the fret you want, and do it so that only 1 string makes a sound, and wen you pluck all the uvas, it doesnt make a sound.

u just have to mute the strings u dnt want to strum by lightly pressing them with ur other fingers, i do it on guitar but its easier on bass
