Cleveland was riddled with graft and corruption all the way to the police department, and was in a financial mess when Kucinich took office. He was young and naive, trying to take them all on directly and lost (politically). The Cleveland Trust (Ameritrust) terminated the city's line of credit because Kucinich refused to sell them Municipal Light (CCP), forcing the default. But today that same utility is a valuable asset to Cleveland. Kucinich has good reason to mistrust banks.

Cleveland went into default (behind on payment on 1 loan) when Kucinich refused to be blackmailed into selling Muny light.

Dennis Kucinich is an idiot and a grandstander. Ken Lewis was forced into a merger with Merrill Lynch by Paulson, which both have acknowledged, and somehow Lewis is in the wrong? He said he requested a letter asking for an assurance that BOA would receive aid if the Merrill deal went south because it was forced upon his company by the government. Kucinich is playing word games and being hostile towards the witness for attention. Typical political grandstanding. No real value from the testimony.

u also gotta understand that Lewis secretly had always wanted to buy merrill, it was supposed to be the crown in his jewel. I know that it didn't help that Paulson and Bernanke too were putting pressure on him and that he was pressured not to invoke the MAC but still he could have told the shareholders as this was his obligation.
